RE: JMU @ Delaware hoops
Another disappointing finish in the battle of last place. I’ve only been to one practice this year so I can’t tell what Rowe is coaching in end game scenarios during practice. Is it the message or the messenger? I’ve never seen a team be so incompetent at the end of games over a 30 game season. It isn’t luck or fluky when it happens repeatedly.

It’s official. The Dukes are repeat participants in the Keener round for the first time since, you guessed it, Dean Keener.

Team scores 3 points the final 4 minutes of the game to squander a 6 point lead. Outscored 11 to 3 in the final four minutes of play. Typical.

Listened to postgame. Phillips not injured or sick. Rowe implied a lack of hustle and being "bought in."

...and the season started so promising with a 30 point victory over Bridgewater. One more game to match last year's win total.

NE up by 19 with a minute left at Elon. 5 straight losses by Elon and all have been by 15 or more.

If JMU wins Monday night at Elon, we get the 8-seed and face Drexel at the CAAT.

If JMU loses Monday night at Elon, we get the 10-seed and face Elon again at the CAAT.

Elon's loss tonight cashes in the 6-seed for UNCW and no inclusions of references with Dean Keener next weekend.

If I were JMU I would rest everyone and if Elon wins so be it. The 10 seed against 7 Elon for the right to play NE is a much better draw than the 9th seed Drexel for the right to play CoC

I live HCLR but his end of game coaching is down right terrible. Like Hart said, this is now a pattern not coincidence.

Interesting factoid from last night's game: The first points by a non freshman for JMU came on a 3 pointer by Snowden with 7:17 left in the game. Our 5 frosh scored 60 of the 66 points.

Definitely a good sign for the future. Another quality recruiting class next year could provide for some consistency for a few years.

Another factoid from the Delaware game. Matt Lewis has raised his scoring average from 10.0 to 14.5 during conference play. After the conference opener against Northeastern, he dropped to 9.9. Since then, he has raised his average EVERY single game (except one, where it stayed the same). We are really going to enjoy watching him develop over the next few years.

Factoid 3

The freshman played 130 of the 200 minutes and shot 24 of 46, Ramone and Stuckey played he other 70 minutes and shot 2-17.

When your team is being carried by Freshman and your upper classmen dont perform, you are going to have a hard time winning games.

No Joey Mclean last night.

Do we really have a good track record of tuning talented freshman into seniors that can lead us to a CAA Championship?

I agree the freshmen look like they could compete, but all I can focus on is another 20+ loss season. It’s depressing to the point I’ve lost the ability to imagine future NCAA appearances.

Don't lose hope, we're still on track for our every 19 years appearance......

I like this approach with Phillips. It is clear with his body language at times he could care less and is lacking effort. Rowe should have gone to 'tough love' approach with him long ago.

There is a reason why this is his 3rd school. You take chances with transfers.

“There is no doubt this team is going to compete and be in every game. They have a lot of fight in them. I am interested to see how they grow. They just seem to be so close. That is what is frustrating because they do have the talent to win more games.”

Unless you have the FAB 5 with 3 pros it is really difficult to win with freshmen. As good as Matt Lewis has been, he never played point guard in high school. When they arrived on campus Banks, Greg, Zach and Dwight were shipwrecks on defense. Banks got to play early because he is a bit more advanced offensively and there was more of an opening at the 3. All four of those guys have a ways to go on defense but they have all started to improve. Not having a healthy Joey has really hurt our guard depth and forced Stuck and Matt to play a lot of minutes. I can't figure out whats wrong with Stuckey lately but John Wooden would have had a tough time squeezing out a win when arguably your best offensive player hits one shot against Delaware. Develle has been a bit of a disappointment with his lack of hustle. It apparently reached a breaking point at Delaware with Lou leaving him on the bench for most of the game. I thought the most revealing stat of the Delaware game was the fact that with the exception of 6 points all of our other points were scored by freshmen.

If we can keep these guys eligible and at JMU we are going to have fun watching them for the next three years. I am hearing that there is a feeding frenzy going on from schools trying to pry Matt away.
