We could go independent in football or drop back to FCS. OR, the A10 could start a football conference and have that be the "east coast" league. There used to be A10 football before the CAA absorbed it. Don't see why they couldn't start it again, only as an FBS league.

Pure speculation, but, I wonder if any of this explains the delay in making any announcements about the stadium?

A10 Football conference:

ODU, App St., Charlotte, Coastal, UMass, UConn, Liberty, JMU

A10 basketball: Remains as is with the addition of ODU & Charlotte.

That football conference is pretty weak, but I've said all along that Id go back to FCS (which is almost what this football conference is) to get in the A10 for everything else.

I don't know what the requirements are for a conference sponsoring FBS football, but right now they have one FBS school (UMass), three FCS schools (Richmond, Fordham and Rhode Island, the latter of which nearly went the reduced-scholarship route), a reduced-scholarship FCS program (Duquesne) and two non-scholarship FCS programs (Davidson, Dayton). They'd have to dramatically reconfigure their membership to make it happen, and that presumes that the NCAA would even sanction another FBS conference.

We are left being happy to be on a Facebook feed where you need a network engineer to get it to your television and then you spend half the game watching people update their Instagram or on WTVZ-2 where you scramble to get rabbit ear anntenae at Walmart an hour before the game. Being in conference with VCU, GMU, UR, and GW is much more appealing from a marketing standpoint. All our conference games with them showed up on MASN and CSN and I believe we even had a few VCU games show up on ESPN and ESPN2.

I agree. I think you are starting to see true rivalries develop between ourselves and WKU, MTSU and Marshall. If we could get UAB, Charlotte and LA Tech back to their historical levels i think C-USA could be a reasonable basketball conference. It just seems that we can't get everyone firing in the same year.

I have heard that FBS leagues are allowed by NCAA, and that them not being allowed is a rumor that people have just gone along with.

I wondered the same thing. In the "east coast or A10 football league" it wouldnt be as critical to build a first class, top tier stadium immediately, as the only team with one in that conference would be Liberty.

The only question if this were to happen is can the EC league get a few bowl affiliations?

RE: ODU to A10?!?
I’ve come full circle on the idea of Conference USA. I was extremely excited to be in a conference with East Carolina, Tulane, & Tulsa. Thought we’d have some really nice rivalries. However, none of that came to fruition. The conference is far flung and I actually think it hurts, rather than helps, branding - especially when compared to schools in the A-10.

I still think FBS football is a must. But if we can manage as a football indy for a few years while the regional conference is built, I’d say move to A-10. Academic & athletic profile is a better fit. At the same time I’d move wrestling to the EIWA. No need to have a dual meet schedule West of Pennsylvania.

Both terrible decisions; going back to FCS moreso.

Agreed. Why jump when it looks like things are finally starting to come together? The top of the conference is strong in basketball, and some of the bottom teams have made improvements. Especially UTSA and North Texas. According to Harry, conference re alignment killed attendance, than why do it again? Give these rivalries time to form.

Conference realignment killed attendance because of whom we realigned with. Our students and alumni don't know most of the teams in our conference...even the good ones. Realigning with our regional/historical rivals, i.e. VCU, GMU, Richmond, etc. would SOLVE problems...not create them.

RE: ODU to A10?!?
There was an interesting post in one of the Sun Belt threads about UCONN desiring to go independent in Football and Big East in everything else. This was from a UCONN fan and linked to an article about it. The point being, if UCONN went independent, that would make 3 independent FBS schools in our extended region: UCONN, UMASS and Liberty. With ODU, we would be halfway to an FBS-only conference.

If UCONN goes independent we should try to take UCONN's spot in the AAC.

Yes, for basketball. Not at all for football, which was the focus of the decline in attendance article...

Good point. Could JMU move up and count towards the 8? Activity among these schools is something they should be monitoring.

This. Best case scenario.

If Marshall and Western Kentucky go with us....sobeit. But, just us.......I'm not sure the A-10 is that appealing.
