ODU to A10?!?
https://pilotonline.com/sports/college/o...8d137.html

This article is about football realignment, but buried in here is a comment from the A10 commish that they would welcome ODU for all other sports. WOW. How has this not come out before?

RE: ODU to A10?!?
I completely agree with Harry in this article too. Its become apparent that we do not have the state support or resources to keep up with the football arms race in CUSA. $1 million dollar coaches, $100 million dollar stadiums, indoor practice facilities etc are probably too much to expect in the next 20 years. If we can get with more like minded and similarly funded and supported schools for football, and get ODU back in a more respected, regional and actually broadcast basketball conference with real rivals I would be all for it. Sort of the best of both worlds in my opinion.

Where did the "A-10 was never going to take us because of Fbs football" come from
was that a rumor, was it from our admin, was it from her at the time? I can't remember but I clearly remember that being beaten into the dirt during discussions over the years that we've been in cusa

RE: ODU to A10?!?
Another option is to become a multi-bid conference, earn more money, and become more attractive to TV.

A10 in basketball would be great. CUSA basketball is just beginning to become what we think it can be.

I just hope we don't end up in Big South 2.0 (FBS version).

RE: ODU to A10?!?
Why would the A-10 want to add schools? They've already got 14; not only are they in no hurry to expand now, they can survive the loss of two programs (like Dayton + St. Louis to the Big Priest). Perhaps if they lost three (say, UMass leaving for an all-sports conference), they might add a program to get back to 12, but until then, I don't see it.

I also wonder what happened between 2012, when ODU was apparently told "thanks but no thanks" by the A-10, and last year, when the commissioner made these comments. Was she speaking theoretically? Was it contingent on ODU dropping back to FCS (or disbanding football entirely)? Was it an oopsie? Did Harry's source(s) that said the A-10 turned them down misspeak? Or did Harry mishear?

Finally, I've heard time and time again on the realignment board that the NCAA doesn't allow FBS football-only conferences. So if that's the case, they'd have to fight to reverse the ban.

What would happen to football if we hypothetically joined the A10?

RE: ODU to A10?!?
I told everyone that we were in fact offered this deal back in 2011. I couldn't provide proof due to the source (not an ODU source) and thus called a liar. Looks like it is finally coming out and I'll be vindicated. They wanted ODU and VCU. When we declined, they wanted GMU. Then they took Butler instead after getting interest and GMU was set aside until the next round.

The next 20 years? Our funding compared to other schools in the league is fine we're just behind the 8 ball in facilities because our program is so new.

That said, I agree that something has to be done with the conference situation and regionalization is probably key. I'd welcome joining the A-10 if a realistic FBS football league can be formed but it seems like a long shot. The AAC should be our goal but I fear by the time we achieve it all the good schools will be gone and we will have chased fools gold. I think taking some of our eastern CUSA conference mates and spinning off would be a good long-term solution but there is the auto-bid problem as Harry mentioned. But Marshall, WKU, MT, UAB, Charlotte and ourselves makes a pretty good start to an all sports conference. Fill in with JMU, App and Ga So maybe. Hell I'd try FB independence and going to the A-10 but that'd probably put too much strain on the FB program. Ain't no easy answers, only thing I know for sure is Harry would have gotten more play from this article if it had come out after March.

I don't think that's true. You can't have basketball only conferences.

That makes sense. FBS without football becomes only BS.

Two stories, as I recall.

The first I can't find but I swear on a stack of AP Stylebooks that it existed; it was a piece that broke the A-10's interest in VCU and George Mason about nine months before they invited VCU. The story mentioned that Old Dominion was not being considered because of the possibility that they'd move football to FBS and make them a perpetual flight risk.

The second story was Harry's takeout piece in 2013 about the nuts and bolts of the move to CUSA. The pivotal quote:

Quote:[Selig]had met with Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher while in New Orleans, then had a meeting on April 12 in Newport News with the A-10's Bernadette McGlade. Both expressed high regard for ODU, but had little interest in adding the school.

Curious tidbit about the linked story that I didn't realize (or maybe just forgot): For as much as people here don't care for Judy MacLeod as commissioner, if it wasn't for her visit to the school and subsequent gushing review to then-commissioner Britton Banowsky, then ODU isn't in CUSA. For better or worse.

If we ever get basketball to the A10, that is a gamechanger.

I'm looking on Google now to see if there's any references one way or the other but not having any luck. I've only heard it on the realignment board but I've heard it a lot. Hell, maybe it's not a rule. That place would melt down if that were the case.

But to the best of my knowledge, there's never been a football-only FBS/1-A conference since the division split. There's a few in FCS (Pioneer, and technically CAAF and MVCF), but none in FBS. There's a definite logic to allowing them, because a large footprint isn't the barrier for one sport that plays four or five road conference games that it'd be for a multi-sport conference.

My take is that you can never trust anything anyone says during realignment.

RE: ODU to A10?!?
I am happy to have WKU, Marshall, and MTSU in our conference and they are as good as anyone in the A10, but we are in different regions and as good as the teams are, the games are still unmarketableat this point. We are left being happy to be on a Facebook feed where you need a network engineer to get it to your television and then you spend half the game watching people update their Instagram or on WTVZ-2 where you scramble to get rabbit ear anntenae at Walmart an hour before the game. Being in conference with VCU, GMU, UR, and GW is much more appealing from a marketing standpoint. All our conference games with them showed up on MASN and CSN and I believe we even had a few VCU games show up on ESPN and ESPN2.
