New Women's Soccer Coach Named
And she's...an assistant from UIC?

Julie Colhoff Women's Soccer Head Coach

The Athletic Department is broke like it seemed to be in the 90s isn't it?

RE: New Women's Soccer Coach Named
Did NIU ever send out anything saying the old coach was let go or did I miss it?

UIC has been known to have a solid mid-major soccer program. She’s got Championships on her resume. Also won championships at Loyola University. I don’t see anything wrong with this hire. It’s not like any of you have been dying to go to an NIU soccer game. Lol

UIC just started their soccer program a few years ago.

Meant soccer overall. I have friends who played for the men’s team there.

No. 1 --- The UIC men's program is nothing special either regardless of what your friends may tell you. It's still the Horizon League which has never had an equivalent of Akron.

No. 2 -- In answer to huskie1stdown's question as to whether anything was ever said about the old coach being let go: No, NIU never did.
The lack of transparency and the secrecy which STF and this administration operate with is a major part of the problem.

I genuinely hope Julie Colhoff will succeed and hope to be wrong, but it appears NIU settled or this is the best to be had for a program that offers the bare minimum in salary and support.

That press release is extremely poorly written at best or deceptive at worst.
BDB5yp, have you ever bought a car? Do you believe everything the salesperson tells you?

You say UIC has been known to have a solid mid-major soccer program.
Did you read the sentence that said (Colhoff) spent the past four seasons as the top assistant....as part of building a new program? Do you know that UIC’s first season of women’s soccer was 2014, so it’s a four-year program. As bad as things have been at NIU, do you know the series record? UIC is 0-1-1 all-time against NIU women's soccer.
UIC is no more of a solid program than any other Illinois school. Per the release: at UIC, the Flames improved each season, and finished 2017 with a winning record (WOW: 5-4) in the Horizon League for the first time in school history.

Per the NIU release: “an assistant at Lewis from 2011-13….(Flyers) posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 18 years.” That would be 8-7-2 in 2013 and 10-7-1 in 2012.
Must be some adjective or clarification missing because Lewis lists women’s soccer results dating back to 1986. Sorry that NIU media relations did no research (or perhaps was misinformed), but Lewis’ website under all-time results has the following season records: 16-4-2 in 1995, 15-3-1 in 1994, and 10-7 in 1993. That looks like back-to-back-to-back winning seasons…..which would be better than the 7-4 debut record in 1986 which was followed by 12-2-2 in 1987. But hey, research and accuracy, what are those concepts? Sorry, today happens to be International Women’s Day and also Proofreading Day.

Per the release: “She helped lead Loyola to three championships during four seasons.” Yes, as a player, she was a member of Loyola teams that won the 2006 and 2007 tournament championships and tied for the 2008 regular-season title with Milwaukee. Those would be frosh, soph and junior years.
So that’s where you got that “she’s got championships on her resume” idea. Not that it’s really important, but that “two-time all-conference selection” reference is Second-Team All-HL in 2008 and First-Team All-HL in 2009 (…….ask German or other posters if that distinction matters).

For whatever it’s worth: Northern Illinois was the first major (Division I) university in the state of Illinois to have women's soccer and hired Frank Horvat who had multiple state-contending teams for both boys and girls soccer at Rockford Boylan. His connections in the high school ranks brought numerous top-level (i.e., all-state) recruits and NIU won MAC titles before the league was awarded an automatic berth to the NCAA. Granted his last six years all included single digits for wins.
He was replaced by Marci Miller (Jobson) -- a member of the U.S. National Women’s Team while a coach here -- and her hiring had comments from North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance, US Women's National Team head coach Greg Ryan, Princeton head coach Jim Launder. She took NIU from 5-11-2 (3-8 and 11th in MAC) to 8-22-1 (5-6 / 7th) to 10-5-5 (6-3-2 / 3rd) before being hired away by Baylor and achieving NCAA success.
Then came Carrie Barker in 2008 – an assistant from Big Ten Wisconsin --- who was 9-6-5 with Miller’s seniors but was 25-40-11 in four years and 2-14-2 (1-10 / 12th in MAC) when she got canned.
Then came John Ross in 2012 – previously the goalie coach before being elevated to associate head coach in 2007 when North Dakota State moved up to Division I. At NIU he was 36-64-18 and not worthy of a release or explanation for his departure.

Rumor has it that NIU grads -- who also happen to be former members of Huskie soccer teams -- were interested in this position and inquired as to salary, staff, budget, etc. What’s not known is what became of their interest or applications.
Steve Goletz coached Naperville North to the IHSA Class 3A girls state championship in 2012 and 2013; Julie Bergstrom’s Waubonsie Valley teams won state crowns in 2010 (3A / finished third in 2014), plus 2007 and 2008 (both 2A); Henry Wind won boys 1A championships in 2000 and 2001 at Benet; Willie Fillian a boys crown in 1994 and third-place in 1995 at Fremd.
If the job didn’t have enough of whatever to lure them back to DeKalb, do you suppose it would have helped if Frazier at least consulted with them? Granted, he had those statements from the UIC women's coach plus the Lewis coach and AD; and let's assume the Alabama grad and ex-Wisconsin administrator got recommendations from his P5 peers or at least those ADs from G5 who would like a separate football championship.
