MAC Tournament - men's basketball
soooo..

looks like it will be us, eastern or western grabbing that 4th spot.

even if we finish 5th, not a bad thing.. why?

1.) winner of #5 seed plays #12 seed in the monday game. winner plays #4 seed (western or eastern) in quarterfinals in cleveland

2.) since we're still not gelling (as the ohio brodcaster was saying) monday gives us another game to get it together & build confidence.

let's say eastern goes 2-1 in final 3 games & we go 3-0.. eastern takes the #4 spot. we play monday & win (4-game winning streak) go into CLE on a roll - this is what i see happening 04-cheers

moving ahead to friday, we'd play a vulnerable buffalo team - avoiding the most dangerous team, ball state, till the championship game on sat.

my plans are coming together nicely 05-stirthepot
i flee 01-lauramac2 & head to cleveland 13 days from today 02-13-banana

I like the way you think even if it is a little far fetched. I guess last years ending was too so what the heck.

The MAC is so weak that Kent State repeating is not that far-fetched. Unlikely, sure, but name a team in the weak MAC that Kent State can't beat. There is not a scary team in the entire conference, which seems to, as a whole, get weaker every year.

There isn’t a team that they can’t beat in one game. Even at 50/50 four in a row is only a 6% chance. If we end up a 5-8 seed we will be less then 50/50 in at least 3 of the 4 games. I think that’s pretty close to far fetched. Remember last year we were playing much better than our record the last 6 games. So far not this year.

Agree Burden. I said it was highly unlikely. But who would bet the house that they won't? I wouldn't.

This time last year I was expecting us to lose the play-in game. After we lost to Akron, I was sure of it.
This conference is so screwy. The top seeds don't win as often as they should.

It's easy to forget that CMU had a wide open look at the end of regulation that rimmed out. Imagine how different we'd all feel right now if that one went down. Just shows you how even the MAC is top to bottom and how the tournament literally is anyone's to win. Obviously we're not playing well but like last year I think we have the talent to do it, if it clicks... And I think most teams have the ability to knock us out in round one as well.

RE: MAC Tournament - men's basketball
The thing is that the elite MAC teams in any given year (this year, Buffalo, Toledo and Ball State) aren't as superior to the rest of the league as they used to be. Sure, the smart money says that one of those three will probably win it, and that the bottom four don't really have a prayer, but ONE of the middle 5, including Kent State, will get relatively hot and will at least have a shot. Not a great shot, but a shot.

RE: MAC Tournament - men's basketball
Why is everybody of the opinion the MAC is so different then before? I go back to the early 80’s and it seems the same to me. Somewhere between the tenth and fifteenth best conference. Always has two or three teams that appear to be better (and worse) then the rest of the league. One of these teams will usually win the tournament. I’ll agree they seem to have less star power (probably because our salary cap is too low, ha ha) then in the past but we have rarely had a dominate team in the league. Even our 2002 team had to struggle to beat BGSU. I know some of you go back before the mid 80s maybe that’s the difference.

BGSU was very good that season - I think they lost something like 6 games - 3 to us but were ignored by the selection committee

RE: MAC Tournament - men's basketball
Burden, I wouldn't say it is SO different. But, it is weaker at the top than in many other eras. Just go back to when Majerus coached Ball State about 30 years ago and go from there. Assuming that Buffalo, Toledo and Ball State are the top 3, you'll find very few seasons, until recently, when the three best teams weren't significantly better than this year's crop. That 2002 BGSU team would dominate this year's MAC. So would the 1999 and 2001 Miami teams.

So would all those Akron teams that blew it in the Mac finals.

Maybe I’m interpreting these comments wrong. I’ve been reading into them that lower seeds (4 and below) have a much better chance of winning the tournament this year than in the past and I just don’t see it.

RE: MAC Tournament - men's basketball
I think it’s hard for some fans, myself included, to wrap our heads around the idea that some of the usual suspects are looking at first round campus site games. I’m talking, of course, about the Flashes, Ohio and Akron in particular. Ball State has little to no “cashew”. And the fact that our preferred team has been so up and down I think there is a belief that somehow Buffalo has peaked.

Burden, my original point was that the middle-of-the pack teams have a better chance than in most past years. Still, I concede that the chance is slim.

At least we aren't Akron (who is in last place in the MAC) or Ohio (who is 1 game ahead of the Zips. Both of them are looking at road campus site games!
