I want Tubby gone. I don't care how many teams we may beat by the end of the season. If Tubby is not here next year, I will consider this season a success.

So if we were to be at the top of the league next season you wouldn't go to the games because of the damn coach?

Seeing as how I'm gone traveling for work 10 months out of the year no.. I'm just being realistic. The fans won't return with tubby at the helm. They see no real future with him.

Is Tubby delusional, or just deceptive?
Irregardless, as we say in the English department, the outcome is the same.
Tubby could announce early retirement and I'd be singing, "Here Comes the Sun"!

I wonder if he thinks Saul will be a serious candidate for the head coaching job after he completes his 5 year contract.

Who is the beast that will stop us...
Wichita is losing a lot, Houston is losing a lot, Cinci is losing a lot (But I am sure they will reload).
UCF is the one team that will likely come back stronger who is ahead of us currently.
But if he doesn't recruit a couple of guys to fill our holes it is highly unlikely.

I agree 100%. If we can fill a couple of holes we’ll be an NCAA bubble team next year.
I just don’t get the gloom and doom.

The gloom and doom comes from the fact that next year looks like our peak and that is highly unacceptable.

Because THIS team, by any statistical measure, isn't good.
Whether you want to look at Kenpom where Memphis is at 160, or RPI, or Sagarin, etc.
As of today, Memphis has a negative scoring margin. That has only happened SEVEN times in the last 55 years and the last one was 24 years ago.
Their three best wins are vs. Northern Kentucky, Tulsa, and Temple (who is 7th in the AAC).
Memphis is 6th in the conference.
So what's the upside? They bring all the same players back from a 6th place team who doesn't outscore opponents and can't really compete with decent teams.
That makes sense.

Considering it's almost March and we still have only one player signed next year, it appears that the peak of the Tubby Smith era will be competing for an NIT bid before 5 of the top 6 players on the team graduate and we have to start all over again, without any past recruiting success. The thought that somehow that's going to magically turn around is just like thinking a team full of juco's and low ranked freshmen were going to magically compete for an AAC title.
I'm not sure what's so hard to get about that. There is no guarantee that Butch Pierre would even accept an assistant job here even if there were staff changes. It's no secret that next year is going to be make or break, so why would a good recruiter join Tubby's staff? If the season goes bad, he's out of a job. Even if so, there needs to be more than one change. Every thing you guys say about next year is "We just need to fill a couple of holes like pg and shooting."
Gosh, if it's so easy, why hasn't he done it in any of the last 2.5 classes?
Also, we just beat two teams that are currently 1-12 over their last 13 games. Somehow that has people thinking that we have improved, exactly what happened before we played the last good team on our schedule and we got thrashed.

We had basically none of this team last April and now there is a conversation on how next season they will be the top of the conference. How can you possibly know what he would have 2 seasons for now?

If you are good enough to win the conference tournament, you don't even have to worry about being a NCAA bubble team.

I thought the goal of the MEMPHIS TIGERS has always been a NATIONAL championship.....not simply a league title.... lowing our expectations .

The conversation is between Tubby and 4 other people. The other million people understandably think that he is either crazy or trolling or both.
Quote:How can you possibly know what he would have 2 seasons for now?
When there was a giant pool of players, and logically speaking less competition for these players, Tubby couldn't sign any of them. So now out of the top 150, we are talking to maybe 4 or 5. Our competition for these players is now fierce among schools that are in a much better situation, and recruit much harder than Tubby and his staff, and are much better than Tubby and his staff.
The schools that aren't competing for these players already have a head start on the 2019 class. We don't have a single decent recruit signed for 2018, and we are already out on most if not all of the locals for 2019.
The short answer to your question is that this year was easily predictable and next year will be also.
