RE: Official Game Thread: Wofford
We are not the best team right now. No where close.

We were celebrating win streaks, looking at bracketology , giving coaches raises etc.

I am not sure if anything is going well at this time.

3 pointers ?
Free throws ?
Devastating full court press ?
Tight man to man ?
Boxing out ?
Turnover ratio ?
Zone defense ... What's that ? We go from one extreme to the other.

Is the next episode the Forbes Awakens or The Greensboro Strikes back ?

Sadly the pregame odds would favor the latter. We look tired , out of sync and lacking any passion at this point. Hope we turn it around and quick.

It's hard to comprehend what a collapse and turnaround this has been. From realistically talking about top 25 votes and a good seed to now dreading a first round matchup with the Citadel. THE CITADEL. Didn't see anything tonight to suggest Furman will have any trouble finishing off the job on Sunday.

Since the NIT bid is gone, and possibly the NCAA next week, if that happens I do not want to accept a low rung post season tournament. Sorry. And I am pissed.

We didn't steal that idea, It is a national promotion that Chick a fila offers and several college and some pro teams have used it.

Harrison play defense? I haven't seen him do that yet, seen him foul a ton in limited action.

Well the incident definitely occurred and McCloud was not on the court in crunch time.

Hopefully Forbes can find the right buttons to push and challenge their pride and get them out this funk Sunday. Still worried about the tournament though.

RE: Official Game Thread: Wofford
If we beat Furman and Mercer beats Wofford we can still get the 1 seed. We would win the tiebreaker cause we beat Mercer twice and UNCG didn’t.

Teams are now able to penetrate and go at us inside at will. Something changed.

We get absolutely no calls. ZERO. People will look at the foul count and go oh that looks pretty even but that doesn’t tell the story. Teams have been fouling us to stop us from getting an easy bucket where our fouls are called away from the ball or to bailout a guy when he throws up a shot with his back to the goal. That call on Long tonight was a game changer. That should have been an intentional foul on Magee for grabbing him on an open layup. That call was a potential 4-7 point swing.

I was talking to dad about that, I figured they would do offense/ defense if nothing else with Long. I know Long hit a couple of threes (but took a bad one late and missed it) But career data tells me you don't want him taking the clutch shots late.

That gimme Burrell missed at the end of the game summed up the nicely. Forbes didn't use names but brought that miss up a couple of times. Got the shot we wanted.. right and the rim and couldn't finish.
ETSU had the chances, were right there.. couldn't finish.

Forbes sounded incredibly poised and positive on the radio. Definitely doing some spinning, not Bartow level, but certainly trying to polish the turd of a finish this is shaping up to be. He really emphasized how sharing the conference and going 15-3 would be an accomplishment.

There is a chance that we are having trouble being the hunted. When this team was being doubted they seemed to embrace it but now they are getting everyone’s best shot and it’s been tough. During this bad streak we seem to be getting beat by the teams second or third options. Magee got shut down tonight. He was lucky to get those bailout free throws to make it look like he did ok.

RE: Official Game Thread: Wofford
I think that some of you are overreacting a little. The last two games could have gone either way, and we could have easily won both of those games.

I don't see tonight as much of an upset, as I don't see much of a talent disparity between ETSU, UNCG, Furman, Wofford, and Mercer. I think that was the idea at the start of the season, and it appears to have gotten back to that. We got hot at one point in the season and beat UNCG when we got 2 early fouls on one of their important players, we beat Wofford when they were missing an important player, and we beat Furman when their best player got injured in a tight game. Now we have lost to UNCG and Wofford, and will have a dogfight on our hands against Wofford in that rematch.

Next week, we could get beat in the first round or win the tournament- I don't have any idea how that will play out. To me, it will all depend on our bigs and our game plan. If our game plan is to have our guards drive inside to get blocked or turn it over, we will lose one of those games. If our game plan is for our guards to wait until the shot clock is running down and shoot a 3, we will lose one of those games. If our game plan is to pound it to our bigs and let our inside game set up our guards, we can win the tournament IF Jurkin plays well.

For what its worth, I agree about the minor postseason tournament. NCAA Tournament, NIT, or call it a season. We all know that won't happen though.

I would give him a shot rather than get the same no defense that jurkin has been giving us this month.

We got spoiled by the run. We were picked 4th. Yes a share of the title would be an accomplishment. This team is struggling with interior defense and it should t be a surprise. We are THIN there. If we wouldn’t have got that 5th year for Peter who knows where we would be. This is a good team but not the best we have ever seen here. Not taking anything away from the guys as they play their behinds off but this seems to be who we are. We can beat anyone in the conference but can potentially lose to anyone. These guys can still get it done. Got to figure out what these teams have done to expose us and fix it.

I agree to a point. Based on preseason projections and the bumpy start, most of the season has been a total surprise and treat. Certainly not getting style points for stumbling in to a co- championship after starting 13-0 but it will absolutely be huge to do that. Something is just different though. It's been a steady drop in play since at least the first Citadel game and now it's bottoming out.

RE: Official Game Thread: Wofford
This team is not playing the way it was a couple of weeks ago. That's not good no matter how you spin it.

We made our reputation on stifling defense - that's what got us rated 37th in the country for defense by KenPom (67th overall). We went into the Citadel game holding our conference opponents to .384 FG% and .309 from 3. Tonight we let Wofford shoot 56.3% from the field and 47.1% from 3, both numbers well above their season average. We held them to only 8 three's. Hold Wofford to less than 10 made 3's and you usually beat them. But not if you are letting them score that easily and that efficiently.

We had been a much better rebounding team than Wofford, effectively tied for 1st in the SoCon with a +6.9 margin to their +2.4. Yet tonight we got out rebounded 27 to 24. That's mostly a matter of desire and hustle.

On offense Wofford played us for the drive, going big a lot, playing Cam Jackson and 6-9 Keve Aluma about 10 minutes apiece more than they usually get. Burrell ran into at least 3 charges, McCloud got stuffed several times. They were daring us to shoot the 3, which we did better than against Citadel or UNCG (7 makes on 35%), but not good enough.

And we had no answer for Cam Jackson, who clogged up the middle on defense and powered past Jurkin and to a lesser extent Armus for 18 points on 9-15 shooting, adding 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal. Peter got 11 points and 8 rebounds in 21 minutes, but couldn't stop Jackson. Armus didn't score, but got 5 rebounds and played a little better defense in 20 minutes. Both of them were on the floor together briefly, something I had been interested in seeing. But to little effect. I said before the game that Jackson would be a big problem - but I hardly expected that we'd handle him so poorly.

No we weren't far behind Wofford. What seemed to me to be a terrible foul call on Jermaine after Magee fell and we were off on a fast break resulted in a 4 point swing at a critical time. But we are just not playing as well as we had been a couple of weeks ago. This is hardly the time for a slump.

Offense isn’t really our problem. We are getting beat because teams are shooting so well. Whether it’s we aren’t playing defense as well or scared of getting called for fouls or whatever I don’t know but it’s the defensive end we are losing on. Teams were shooting in the 38% range before and are now shooting in the 50% range.

Can't say I agree offense isn't our problem, we aren't working it inside like we were a month ago. Our first three possessions in the 2nd half we shot and missed 3 threes, just bad and rushed shots. Luckily Jurkin shot a 4th and hit. Some of our senior leaders are making dumb mistakes. It feels like were just getting exposed after having a bunch of tape on us. Teams know how to attack, and defend. I didn't think it would come to this after winning 16 straight, but here we are. I wish I had the answer, but I don't
