RE: Spring practice, day 1
We are going to be VERY inexperienced in the middle of that defense. With Clark, Turner and Matich gone, we have almost 0 returning minutes up the middle. A grad transfer is basically a must. We were already thin and not real experienced.

We have numbers at DT NG, but not sure who gets the nod. Holley played a lot as a true freshmen, I think he’s got one slot in the middle, the other spot is probably up for grabs between 8 others. Findlay played in 10 games as a freshmen but only 5 total in his sophomore, junior year. Aguirre took a medical redshirt last year so who knows. Kailein Gullroy played in three games as a RS freshmen, has great measurables, and was a high profile athlete out of HS. Lance is coming off a redshirt year. Was a 3 Star and ranked the 4th best DT in MI. Jamal Williams has two years left as a JC transfer. Incoming freshmen Will McCabe could also slide to the middle.
The question mark is Wesley French. Great size, but not sure he has the explosion to play on this side of the ball. Pre-med, so he’s busy both on and off the field.
I thought the middle of our defense were warn out by season’s end. Teams were ripping off big runs up the gut. We may see a DL that rotates a lot of people, and that might be a good thing.
Bottom line, very young group, there’s a lot of competition from a group with pretty good resumes. Someone will rise to the top, always works that way.

That's too bad, glad he's still involved, and he certainly didn't lack fighting spirit!

Our defense was noticeably worse when Clark was on the sideline.... he’s going to be missed!

While it is a big group, it is a bunch of guys with little experience. I gotta believe they are looking for a transfer.
Syracuse has another transfer out there, but with them on the schedule, I doubt they are an option.

There are lots of guys available, just no telling if they want to come to Kalamazoo.

One thing we DO have going for us this season is that the guys on defense are a year into the new system and will be able to play at a much faster pace out there... No more "new scheme" excuses this season.. coaches need to coach.

I have a hunch that having a great blitzing linebacker like Clayton (without even seeing him yet in a game) will completely change this attacking defense, even with missing some key linemen. It was somewhat easy to keep the ball away from Darius last year, who was our key player. We didn't have a real threat on the edges that teams had to account for in all situations.*
*Except that one game where MSU stupidly and arrogantly tried to run at Darius despite him being possessed that day by the spirit of Jim Thorpe himself

There is an Ohio State DE out there transferring, he looks like he likes the weight room very much.

Ricci to TE is weird. Certainly gives some speed and hands to the position.
Great move at TE. The kid from Tennessee (WR) is going to play this fall.

Agreed. I think Bussell had the most impressive tape of all of our incoming recruits.

Sorry to hear about this Steve. It was a pleasure watching Steven play for both Syracuse and WMU. Great young man from a great family. He'll do well in life.
