If you read the first post, we were just making sure they were not merging with EVMS.

EVMS is hemorrhaging cash. Hard to see any public institution taking that on right now.

If this is true...ODU should and work with the state to save the ONLY Med school in SE Va. In a public private partnership with Sentara we should find away to make this happen. As well as merging Nursing programs. This could be huge for ODU and the Region. Again...small time thinking by ODU Admin.

That's why their should be a merger. A waste of state resources to have 2 state institutions side by side with duplication of efforts. One of the most important institutional objectives in my mind for Old Dominion.

Why do you think W&M didn't go all in? The general assembly won't approve it. It would require too much state support to make it viable.

Hence why I put the Private part in with what I said. Plus the State allowed CNU and VCU to start engineering programs and invested tax payer $ to do so when ODU is in the region. Why not invest a little more in ODU's program. So the State doesn't want to help ODU / Region ? why is that ?

It would require a MAJOR investment. It would also require EVMS to make concessions due to the financial risk they bring and they have been unwilling to this point.

The only way it happens is if we follow Liberty's path and get a grant/donation from the tobacco commission to fund the merger. Try selling that in Richmond.

I mentioned ODU and Sentara if EVMS wasn't an option. The ODU's VA Beach campus could do a bunch of that heavy lifting. It's close to a sentara location with plenty of room to grow.

Sorry. Bad joke. I was referencing how the thread is a Major announcement and it turned out to be a dud. I'll do better next time!

The state of VA never seems to give Hampton Roads, which includes ODU, a fair shake in anything. Richmond and the rest of the state legislators barely seem to consider Hampton Roads part of VA. They don't want to invest in improving anything in HR. As if its just that ghetto on the water where the port is. Keep all the riff riff over there, so they won't come into the rest of the commonwealth. It truly appears thats how they think. If you think about it, culturally, Hampton Roads is really nothing like the vast majority of the state, thus, its an afterthought, if that, to the majority of the legislators. East of 95 really should be its own state.

I would love to get rid of northern Va. Let DC or Maryland have that part of the state and we can be Virginia.

@blewbyu...If you got rid of NoVA your tax bill might skyrocket as the result.

On the comment made by monarx, I understand the frustration but I wouldn't confuse the inability to get a fair shake from Richmond with being an afterthought. If you want to see an afterthought, take a look at the massive land area that is west of US-29. Outside of Blacksburg where folks have learned the power of the lobby, that area has afterthought written all over it. No jobs, no prosperity and consistent erosions of population levels as talent grows up and never moves back.

Hampton Roads has the people, the resources (both natural and in business), and yes the higher education in place to be as strong as NoVA, if not stronger. That area needs support from Richmond but doesn't need Richmond to boost it. What it needs is a different spirit and definition about progress. And that will never come from Richmond. And ODU should be working with the business community to lead much of that, IMO.

Instead of being pissed off with Richmond, I'd be looking at Charlotte, the Research Triangle, Nashville and the Dulles corridor with some measure of jealousy. And then I'd be pissed off at those that have no interest in improvements or progress in the local seven cities area.

VA beach's Bi research Park could be the start for something of the sorts.
http://vabeachbio.com/bio-corridor/vabeachbio-park/

It's right next to ODU VA Beach complex and a Sentera / EVMS hub

All the more reason for ODU to get Sentera or EVMS to jump onboard.
