Baseball vs. TxSt
Home opener is tomorrow (Tuesday) night against Texas State (barring a rain out). The NWS predicts a 40 to 60% chance of thunderstorms.
The Bobcats were 29-30 last year and return nine position players who accumulated at least 20 starts last season. Rice was 1-1 against Texas State last year with each team winning at home.
Texas State was 1-2 against OK State at home over the weekend.
The Texas State preview lists Zach Leigh as their starter. Zach is a Sophomore RHP who pitched in relief last year with 13 trips to the mound, finishing with a 4.72 ERA and a 0-0 record in 13.1 innings pitched. Given the standard improvement from Freshman to Sophomore years, it is safe to say that Zach is a "proven pitcher".
The Texas State web page says that Dane Acker will start for Rice. Dane still has a lot to prove at Rice.

No.
It may or may not be because of the ABO though

I thought Dane looked pretty good on Friday, once he got control of his nerves. He's a strike thrower, and I was especially impressed with his change up. He reminds me of a right-handed Bobby Bramhall. The OG is sky high on the kid. I think we'll see some combination of Tyner, Lewis and Bordwine tomorrow. Perfect time to let them get their feet wet.

I hope "wet" is not the operative word. I'd say the weather is questionable for tomorrow.

I am hearing that Dominic has suffered a hand injury and could potentially miss some time. Hoping this isn't true...

If it's Dom C., he must have done in transit back to Houston, since he caught the 8th inning fine, and had his best AB of the season so far in the top of the 9th....and he didn't have to do any sliding once he got on base (unfortunately for us).
Dominick Cox is more likely, especially since Frazier pinch hit for him in the 8th. It would still be a loss as I thought he played much better than Weyler-- both the field and at the plate. Perhaps, we give Dulac an opportunity.

RE: Baseball vs. TxSt
Aaron Fitt's additional notes from Orlando...
https://d1baseball.com/analysis/orlando-...f-samford/
Quote:Rice Notes
• Rice coach Wayne Graham walked away from the weekend feeling very good about the state of his weekend rotation, after getting strong starts from Ricardo Salinas (coming back from Tommy John), Matt Canterino (who was electric) and sophomore righty Addison Moss. After splitting his time between infield and the mound as a freshman, Moss looks locked in as the Sunday starter as a sophomore, and his debut was very encouraging. He held Virginia’s quality offense to three runs on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings, though those last two scored after Moss exited and Novak doubled home two inherited runners against Willy Amador. Moss showed feel for four pitches, pitching mostly at 89-90 with command along with a 78-80 slider, a mid-70s curve and a good low-80s changeup.
“I thought Moss did a good job. He gives us a good third starter, which you need,” Graham said. “He’s a competitor. I think he got up to 92, and his changeup was OK. If Salinas is 100 percent and Canterino obviously can pitch, that’s three pretty good weekend starters.”
• Graham is bullish on sophomore third baseman Braden Comeaux, a transfer from LSU-Eunice. A live-bodied athlete with quick feet and soft hands at the hot corner, Comeaux really impressed with his defense all weekend. On Sunday, he turned a nifty 5-3 double play, fielding a grounder on his left and then retreating to tag the bag, then firing a strike to first. That play demonstrated an advanced internal clock and very good instincts, two attributes that were on display again when he robbed Devin Ortiz of a single in the fifth. On that play Comeaux made a diving stop in the hole on a laser ground ball, then got up, settled himself and threw to first in time for the out. Comeaux also showed off some bat speed on Friday, when he turned on a hanging curveball for a solo homer to left-center.
• Rice looks really strong up the middle, with one of college baseball’s best defensive center fielders in Ryan Chandler, an extremely talented and experienced shortstop in Ford Proctor, a promising freshman second baseman in Trei Cruz, and a pair of capable catchers in Dominic DiCaprio and Justin Collins. Chandler is simply a joy to watch, a speed merchant with some sneaky strength in his compact frame and superb defensive instincts. He was particularly impressive on a deep line drive straight over his head, drifting back without losing sight of the ball and making the catch on the warning track — making it look a lot easier than it was.

Fabulous play by Cruz for the second out: He charged a high bouncer up the middle and fired across his body to get the runner. Nice stretch by Sarchet. Every millisecond counted on that play!
