I think the cost (UC scoring a lot at the line) was worth the benefit (UC struggling to do anything else) for Houston. Good gameplan by Sampson and company.

Houston also beat UC to every loose ball which showed up on the glass and once again were able to survive UC mostly taking away Gray as an offensive threat. I've been really impressed by several of their players ability to step up and hit shots. I think all three of Gray's threes had a hand in his face... he got the tiniest look and just buried them. Dude has one of the best strokes I've seen in college basketball. I love Davis's game. I've been incredibly impressed with Houston both games.

I thought UC got in their own way some, but so much of that was driven by Houston's gameplan, their execution of the gameplan, and their ability to hit tough shots against good defense.

That was frustrating to me as well. UH seemed to get every loose ball. We seemed a step slow all night. Give credit to Houston, they deserved the win last night.

Terrific win for my Coogs cuz I consider Cincinnati the top dog of the AAC. I'm glad that UH is beginning to pull its weight for the conference.

Thank you for the comments from the Cincy fans on here. I consider you guys well versed in college basketball. 04-cheers

FIFY.

I know your coach was whining about that after the game, and I'm guessing it sounded reasonable to you, but the rest of us saw little difference between UH's play and Cincy's play, and yet the foul differential was decidedly in Cincy's favor. The Coogs should have been going to the line just as much as Cincy did.

And y'all still lost.

Let that sink in.

And then quit making excuses.

I was commenting on it long before Mick Cronin said anything after the game. It was very obvious. I'm not even saying it to criticize. I thought it was smart coaching. Houston fouled far more in the half court than any team I've watched all year in any game. It was clearly something that had been part of what they wanted to do. Only team that I've seen foul with that frequency is WVU.

Great win Houston, only 27 to go! Definitely helps the conference, I think this pretty much locks up three bids barring a completely cooging.

that's pretty much where i stand. i don't mind losing to houston, they've got a good club and rarely are an easy out. just their tendency to crap the bed makes losses like this sting. good game coogs

I think what you meant to say was "Houston's ability to pull out the win with their strategy to try to match Cincinnati's physicality even though the refs were calling a lot of phantom and ticky tack fouls all night worked great." Perhaps emotions or some other factor caused you to come up with that erroneous post.

Not at all what I meant. Cincinnati rarely fouls. They defend with positioning and rotation. Their numbers reflect that. What houston was doing in terms of fouling isn't remotely close to what UC does.

Houston got away with far more fouls than were ticky tack fouls called on them. It was good strategy that was particularly effective in a home game. No knock on houston for trying to play that way. But hilarious listening to Houston fans try to explain it any other way.

say it with me ..we Are PHYSICAL..we werent trying to foul you every play...its silly to even insuinuate that...

if the plan was to foul we would do it in ways to alter shots so there were no chances of it going in...it would have been blatant and it would have been hard fouls...
when you are purposely fouling you do it in a way that guarantee the shots dont go up and you foul people who arent good at making free throws..evans and cumberland essentially made every free throw

not a SINGLE foul was hard...almost all fouls lite at best....
instead of being soft and say we were fouling.....call it what it is, we were being physical an tough....

FIAFY

I realize you're convinced that every time the ref blew the whistle, it was because a Coog player absolutely hammered a cincy player deliberately, and that when Coog fans try to point out that if the calls against the Coogs were fouls then the same should have been called against Cincy then we're just being biased... so we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Cincy plays physical, and so does Houston. The fouls UH was called for were not intentional, just the result of physical play, and Cincy SHOULD have been called for the same, but they weren't. It's a rep. Cincy has it already so they don't get called for the ticky tack stuff.

yea... every ref calls Houston over the course of the season (not just when they play each other) for way more fouls than Cincinnati because every ref is out to protect cincinnati and get Houston. It's not because Houston fouls a ton more than Cincinnati. Got it.

RE: We took Cincy's best shot
Maybe it's because Houston fans haven't been following basketball long enough to really understand style and how the game is played, but different teams plays different ways. Some coaches want their defenders to force more body contact to knock guys out of position and disrupt what the other team does. They do this knowing they'll be called for more fouls, but like to play that way. Houston is one of those teams. Their defensive players initiate a lot of contact with offensive players throughout the game.

Some coaches really try to avoid fouls and teach their guys to play defense almost entirely by position and rotating. UC is one of those teams. Almost all the contact when UC defends comes from the offensive player initiating contact in a spot the UC defender has beat them too. UC players don't give ground in those situations but aren't initiating the contact either. The way UC is coached on defense is why they commit few fouls.

Houston won the game. They played great, they played their style really well. This is not a knock on Houston, but them getting called for a lot of fouls isn't surprising. It's in how they play. It's effective for them. They are a top 20 type defense and teams really struggle with 2point FG % inside as a result. The tradeoff is getting called for fouls. I figured their fans would be smart enough to get it and be used to it. This isn't some insult to your team. It's literally an observation of the style they choose to play and a compliment to how effective they are in doing so.

Well maybe cincy should try playing tougher. 03-lmfao

And I'm just ignoring the part where you insinuate that just because cincy has played better basketball than UH for quite a while, that means cincy fans are smarter.

I don't disagree with everything you said but I would disagree with you in saying Houston is coached to initiate body contact. I was at the game last night and coach Sampson got on Cory Davis telling him that he was giving the Cincy player too much body.

The way UC defends works great for UC. They are second nationally in adjusted defense. It's not a matter of tough vs. not tough. It's about strategy in how they choose to defend the offensive player.

The way Houston has defended all year has worked well for Houston. They are 21 in adjusted defense and just behind the Bearcats in conference in 2pt % defense. Both teams are good. Both teams play a style that works for them.

I'd agree that last night the Bearcats needed to be tougher at fighting through the contact from Houston players in running their offense and on the glass. I think they let the physical way Houston played them wear them down and affect their play. Houston played the game exactly as they intended and won. I was impressed.

cincy fans have a habit of telling us what we are doing... our plan isnt to foul alot ... its silly to insinuate as much...we arent okay with getting these fouls...you can see sampson imploding whenever all these calls are happening..and he has noted before on working to reduce the number of fouls that are legitimate

so we arent okay with these fouls...and these fouls arent the game plan..our style isnt to foul...stop insinuating that foolishness

sampson has spoken on this before...our style is being physical and being tough..every time the ball is on the ground, we expect everyone to jump on it, every rebound everyone include the guards go for it ...and this is by design you can see them working drills like that on youtube

we are physical ..we are tough....that is part of our style.....
fouling isnt..if it was our players wouldnt be getting angry at the calls, which they were visible angry at...remove the last 2 minutes i was okay with the officiating yesteray...some of the calls the last 2 mins were beyond me..even the announcers noted how bad it was

That's actually exactly what Mick said after the game.

I though Houston absolutely played tougher than us last night. It's exactly why they won the battle on the boards, especially pulling in so many offensive rebounds. They deserved to win with the way they played. They had a good gameplan. We hammered them early with some made shots, but struggled to adjust when Houston really clamped down with their physicality on defense and on the boards.

UH deserved to win. UC just had one of those nights. UH played great D, beat us to loose balls, hit the boards hard. It's a long season and sometimes you just get beat. Last night wasn't our night.
