RE: Smallwood
Eight deep! Cokley, Lee, Sullivan, Bryant, Norton, Darling, Perry, Gueye. No one else with any NCAA Division One experience at all on the team. Only Anderson McCoy with two years of NJCAA experience. Makhtar Gueye's playing time just went up. With the absence of Lavender and Smallwood, 18.7 minutes per game of playing time just disappeared from the bench. It's gotta go somewhere. The team now rely's solely on Gueye to be eighth man.

Yep, Gueye should get some good minutes. Maybe play a little guard/forward some.

Murry is a great ex UAB coach. Everyone has settled into a nice coexistence. No need to rehire him and find out why he is an ex UAB coach.

This era of UAB basketball does have a Murry-ish feel.

I don't know. The head coach isn't openly feuding with an assistant coach. We haven't had back to back 25 point home losses and several players have facial hair.

Maybe that's it. Murry is being hired and made it a stipulation that Smallwood's beard had to go.

What about Darling's porkchop sideburns, someone should ask Murry's stance on them.

But don't list anyone who's actually good because that wouldn't be, you know, realistic.

I have speculated that privately. I have not mentioned it here because Im afraid the negativity some might see could send them over the edge. I hope we don't lose anyone else.

I think balance is overrated.

I think Juco guys & Transfers are important to having a competitive team every year. But, you have to pick them carefully or they could turn into problems.

I don't think the Lavender situation is anyone's fault. But its the result of getting a top freshman like Scottie that usually does not happen.

And Smallwood was probably a recruiting mistake but a reasonable one. A 7 footer with a good outside shot is not something you can teach.

But, I don't think Thomas has improved in 3 years. An argument can be made that he is no worse than Gueye but I think Gueye will improve. I'm not sure Thomas can. And I don't blame any guys who want or expect more playing time. But if & when they become an in season distraction, you should probably cut them loose. That's what I suspect happened here.

Losing these guy guys is not going to ruin our chances for a special season. Our chances were already slim. Both guys thought they deserved more playing time. Both guys were wrong. Although Lavender would have played more if he would not have had "family issues" or quit or whatever you choose to believe.

Good post except for the part where you think balance is overrated. You don't typically want the majority of your team graduating after their senior year.

More concerned about Perry's play for the rest of the season than I am Lavender's and Smallwoods.

Agreed. Perry is probably our best guy off the bench, and if his hand really hampers him we'll miss his production.

This year he is really inconsistent, but when he's on, he has been awesome.
