Blazer Almanac - February 14
February 14

The Blazers are 6-3 in games played today. They have played 6 home games on this day, which means that 6 times in history, UAB fans had to either 1) make a UAB basketball game a Valentines date, 2) blow off a UAB game in the name of love or 3) spend the night in the doghouse because they chose UAB basketball over their sweetie.

The Games

1980 - UAB beat South Florida at home 78-79. This game is memorable because it is the first time in UAB history that a player scored 30 points or more. Keith McCord had 34 points and 11 rebounds. Including this game, the 30 point mark has been passed 49 times by 24 different players. Andy Kennedy did it the most with 7 ga,es followed by Carlos Williams with 6 games. The last player to score 30+ was Chad Frazier who did it in back to back games in November of 2013.

1987 - UAB hosted DePaul who was 21-1 and ranked 5th in the country. Unlike in previous years when Birmingham packed out the coliseum with 17000+ for ranked DePaul teams, only 8352 was in attendance. Possibly because UAB had lost three straight and was in danger of missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in six years. Students in the student section came to the game wearing Green football uniforms and held signs saying "THE TIME IS NOW" in an effort to bring football to UAB. The Blazers stayed close the entire game, but could not overtake the Blue Demons who won 83-71.

1991 - UAB played at South Florida on this date, but their inside game was in trouble. Stan Rose was out with a sprained knee and Elbert Rogers was playing, but with a sprained ankle. George Wilkerson was back after missing four games due to the chicken pox. UAB led by four with 2:03 left, but South Florida would out score them 9-2 the rest of the game, including 7 free throws. South Florida won 64-61, its first win in Tampa verses UAB since 1984.

1998 - UAB won at Tulane in a game that featured a total of 55 fouls and 76 free throws by both teams.

2001 - UAB hosted Marquette, coached by Tom Crean in his second year. UAB led by three at the half, and built a lead up to 11 with 9:36 to play. Marquette cut the lead to 66-65 with 32 seconds left, but Eric Batchelor hit six straight free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the win. pJ Arnold led UAB with 22 points in the 72-66 Blazer win.

2004 - UAB hosted East Carolina looking to go to 8-2 in conference which would be their best start in CUSA history. They were down 39-31 at the half, but UAB's Fastest 40 minutes went on a 21-1 run in the second half. The game was tied at 69 with 2:11 to play. Morris Finley hit a 12 foot baseline jumper with 1:02 left in what turned out to be the winning basket. UAB won 72-69. Gabe Kennedy and Demario Eddins led UAB with 16 points each.

2007 - Wen Mukubu had what may have been his best game as a Blazer on this date when he scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, had 8 assists and three steals in a 83-74 win over Rice. Only two assists away from a triple double.

2009 - The trio of Lawrence Kinnard (22 points) Robert Vaden (18 points) and Paul Delaney (17 points) scored 57 of UAB's 78 points as the Blazers beat SMU 78-75 in Birmingham. Paul Delaney put UAB ahead on two free throws with 8 seconds to go. Kinnard stole the ball as SMU was attempting to take the winning shot, and Vaden added two more free throws giving UAB the three point win.

2015 - On this date, UAB lost for the only time ever to Rice in a game that went to double overtime. UAB trailed by 12 at halftime, but started the second half on a 21-5 run. Robert Brown put UAB ahead by two with a three pointer with 39 seconds to go, but Rice sent the game to overtime with two free throws.

UAB led by as much as 7 points with 58 seconds left in the first overtime, but Rice went on a 8-0 run while UAB turned the Ball over three times in the last minute. UAB was down one when Tyler Madison was fouled with 13 seconds left. He missed the first and made the second, sending the game to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, UAB only managed two points while Rice hit a three pointer and converted free throws. UAB lost 82-73.
