That's true, but he's gonna get 2.5-3 this summer and if we buyout Tubby we couldn't pay 3. Hypothetical of course.
What Bowen should do is just pay Penny 20% more than whatever program is willing to offer him first.
Let another school set the market rate.
If he put his name out there - which he may actively be doing now - he would get some offers, don't you think? Maybe no P5's, but probably some CUSA maybe some AAC.
But he has more value at Memphis. Probably more than 20%. And does he seriously want to go to Greenville, North Carolina?
Finch wasn't getting any HC offers when we hired him. Worked out okay for most of the years. Finch probably would not have accomplished what he did here, anywhere else. I think of Penny along those lines.
But Larry put in the work. 4 or 5 years at UAB as Bartow's top recruiter. Another 7 or so on Kirk's staff.
Not saying it won't work here for Penny, but if he doesn't get the top job, he shares some of the blame. He could have gone the assistant route and then the mid-tier HC job like Damon is doing. Penny chose not to to it that way, thinking he can jump right to the head spot. Could turn out to be right, time will tell.
Not totally disagreeing. My comment was more directed towards the theory that if other schools aren't offering him a HC job, he must not be HC material. Larry was not getting any other offers.

RE: Poll: You're the AD
If, a year or more from now, the job opens up and Memphis doesn't want to give the job to Penny, then Penny has given them an easy way to say no. Just say at the presser for the job search that the new coach has to have college head coaching experience. Or even assistant head coach experience.
But, they need to know before the job opens up. Important to handle it correctly. Or just give Penny the gig.

True. Remember Larry interviewed for like Georgia State after Memphis fired him. Sad.

I hate to say this but anyone that votes to keep Tubby is clueless. I mean this guy does nothing to promote Memphis BB and he does not give a damn about the fan base. He also is too stubborn to hire assistants to recruit for him which he is too lazy to do. The dude is too old fashioned. Time to move on.

RE: Poll: You're the AD
I watched them in the AAC tournament on TV. We had leads in all three games, and squeaked by at the end to win against USF and Tulsa. In the Cincy game, we had a 13 point lead at half time, and come out, shoot everything from outside, not even use the inside game, and make something like 5 out of 30 shots and blow the game. You tell me why you change your whole game plan, and play like that the whole second half. I admit Cincy tightened up their defense, as we struggled to even get the ball across the time line almost every time we got the ball. I believe better coaching could have stopped that and trying some different methods to get the ball up the court. Tubby sat there with this head in his hands or looking down and you could see the frustration or realization that you are fixing to loose the game. We had a chance at the end, could have made a shot and be down by 2 or 3, so we turn it over instead. We blew it and everybody knows it. I felt sorry for Houston as they also blew their game with Cincy, with that turnover at the end on a missed pass.

Easier said than done to attack the post against the Cincy defense.

He has the only vote for Tubby that makes sense. I'd love to see him get hired by an AAC foe.

He was too old fashioned in 90's at UK too. Kentucky and Minn have similar complaints to what our fan base has about Orlando.
