Bearcats and Buckeye Day at the Ohio State House
First saw this a couple weeks ago, but we are representing the statehouse along with OSU to address public college funding at the Statehouse for the second year in the row. We are continuing to outpace the other public schools in the state as the #2 all around voice in the state (Miami U. is higher ranked, Kent State is nearly just as big, Ohio U is Harvard on the Hocking, but we are the best total package).

The Buckeyes have the absolute stupidest looking mascot in the country. I've always thought that but seeing Brutus standing next to the Bearcat mascot makes him look even worse than I thought.

I don't know man... Penn State looks like someone was asked to design the mascot, forgot about it and turned it in at the last second hoping to get a passing great.

Agree it is dumb, but there are some awful mascots out there... Xavier's Blue Blob, Stanford's tree, the Wake Forest guy, etc.

We have a great mascot.

I just like the fact that Cincinnati has a presence in CBUS.

That's what you got out of the post?

As others have said, there are far worse mascots. And Brutus is recognizable, which is the point.

I've had issues with Ohio State, but I love the positioning of UC as one of the two premier public institutions in the state.

I believe that this is the second year. Interesting that it started after Ono was out the door. I think there might be something to be said for working quietly with Ohio State with reasonable and achievable goals for UC's place within the system rather than poking a stick at them in public ("multiple flagships") while blaming them for your failures (no AAU/no CCC) in private. Pinto might not be a tweet machine, but he does seem to be quietly moving the needle and increasing the scope of UC's reach in the state.

As for Miami, I'm guessing showing up at the Illinois statehouse would be more appropriate for them these days.

I am no so sure the Ono public approach wasn't needed first to both fire up the UC base (which it did, especially outside of Cincinnati) and to get on the Ohio State radar, so that now the more reasonable, quieter Pinto approach could be effective.

I agree. Ono also did a bunch of work with OSU higher ups trying to get this moving. It wasn't just publicly calling for multiple flagships, he had a good relationship with the OSU administration and president and worked to get UC to that level.

That's a good point. Hard to tell. I know that research partnerships were increasing with them under NZ, though OSU does that with many in-state publics to keep the peace and share the wealth a bit.

The thing that I think Ono completely misread from not having a long background in the state was how any attempt to open up the system to "multiple flagships" was going to incur a massive blowback from Columbus. People may not like it, but it is realistic to expect given what OSU went through in the 60s and 70s. Ono was tone-deaf not only regarding OSU but also the direction the state system had been slowly moving under both parties for the previous couple of decades. He not only raised the alarm bells at OSU, but he alienated a lot of pols who had been working on higher education issues for many years.

At the end of the day, Ono's primary motivation in all of it wasn't to move UC forward but to move Ono and the cult of personality that he so carefully cultivated forward. If it helped UC, great. If it damaged UC, I don't think he really cared so long as it helped the short-term goals of Ono. He's where he wanted to get to, and UC certainly seems to be prospering without him. So all ends well.

Pinto wasn't a factor in getting this started. He assumed his position as president February, 2017.

I don't know where you get that he had a good working relationship with them. They absolutely loathed him when he started banging the "multiple flagships" drum. They may have been professional about it and continued to work on any joint initiatives between the two campuses (if you haven't noticed, OSU tends to pretty savvy politically and thinks long term), but there was absolutely no love for Ono. The same can be said when he privately blamed OSU for his inability to bring home an AAU invite or CCC designation for the cancer hospital. That got back to Columbus, and it wasn't welcomed.

Nobody up there was sad to see him leave. They viewed him as a self-promoting troublemaker who jumped head first into long standing issues that he didn't really understand. UC might have been working on this during Ono's tenure, but I think it says something that OSU only let it move forward after he was gone and they had a more reliable partner with whom to work.

I know. We had an interim for awhile. The important aspect from OSU's part was that Ono was gone. Only then did they think they could have an honest, reliable partner with which to move forward.

RE: Bearcats and Buckeye Day at the Ohio State House
Obviously everyone has their strengths and weaknesses as a person and as a professional. Dr. Ono engaged the student body and young alumni, so for that they think he is considered to be great. OTOH, I have heard a number of faculty and other university employees who have made similar comments that 1985 is making about him not being so hot in other aspects of the job.

I am hearing very good things about Dr. Pinto being stronger across the board, even though he will never be fully embraced by the students and young alums in the same manner as the previous leadership.

What uniform is the Bearcat wearing?

This is not the only thing I am getting out of this thread. :) I agree with most here that this is a really good thing - to be one of two representatives at the statehouse for this issue, next to OSU. Lets be realistic - OSU is the land grant university in Ohio but we can be a close second to them in most things (and better than them in some). That is not a bad place to be. I went to both schools and liked UC better. It's just a different flavor of really good. I like President Pinto's quiet way of working to improve the university. I am sure his goals are similar to Ono's, just done in a more diplomatic way.

Clifton - I have to disagree on the Demon Deacon. He's very cool. They used to have a real person as the Deac - would fly him into the stadium in a helicopter.

Oh yes great idea. UC working with OSU is great just like South Korea working with North Korea on human rights.
