Did you read what I wrote ? Nobody on our roster except Lee was offered by either team.

We did offer Coleman and Garrett, now at Samford & NKY.

We had interest in a Samford guard but I think we wanted him to walk on and Samford gave him a full ride. And we wanted a UAT walk on guy to walk on with us.

Historically, we have always lost players to both schools so their recent success has not hurt us anymore than usual.

Our problems the last 2 years are not anyone else's fault. We have enough talent to finish in the top 2-4 both years. Our coaching staff gets a D both years. C- last year if you want to be charitable,

That's an amazingly high rating from you ! 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

What could HCRE and staff have possibly done right ?

From me? What you see as Negativity is actually reality. Reality exists independent of anyone's right to ignore it.

If you see negativity everywhere that reality is, it might be your outlook. And its a fairly easy fix with either more exercise or a common medication.

As far as me, I expected us to be 2nd or 3rd in CUSA. So that shows how negative I was before the season started. This does not fit the entire negativity agenda.

Guys like Coke are the kind of guys we can get and it has nothing to do with UAT or AU. And there is no trolling except for maybe Phil. And the IGNORE feature works well. Ive got 2 on it with another 1-2 very close.

Using that logic we should’ve never went after Lee.

No. Just "pick your battles" as Gene used to call it.

I think Lee committing to us was a surprise to the coaching staff. But 8 times out of 10 we are not going to win battles when it comes to UAT or AU.

We have not historically. So you don't totally ignore the kids, but your time is probably better spent with guys we have a realistic chance of getting. Like Coke, or Perry or Nate.

That's always been the way we have to recruit and operate inside the state. The P5 schools show kids around and flash the checkbook to the local kids and we can't compete, off the floor.

Both Pearl and Johnson are having improved results in their programs - Pearl more than Johnson so far. That is a fact UAB is faced with as it struggles to find its way in this state's markets. There is plenty of opportunity for all instate programs if they can show the success to claim it. Pearl and Johnson are not UAB's problem right now any more than Malzohn and Saban are Clark's problem. Being pro UAB does not have to mean being anti anyone else - especially when we don't play them.

That simply isn't true. Unlike in football, UAB often goes head to head with Bama & Auburn for major in state players and even other players in the southeast.

At Bama we recruited Alex Reese, Dazon Ingram, Galin Smith, Riley Norris, and Herb Jones. We recruited one of their signees, Diante Wood, as well.

At Auburn we recruited Jared Harper and Mitchell I believe.

On the flip side, Bama and Auburn both recruited William Lee.

Your numbers don't exactly reassure UAB fans that we "go head to head with UA or AU". You cite 7 players at UA that UAB recruited and UAB got ONE. Three are listed as wanted by both UAB and AU and UAB got that same ONE. I see that as proving what I said more than disproving it. UAB probably matched that record against Duke, UNC, UTK, LSU and other P5 teams.

Just because we haven't landed a lot of them doesn't mean we aren't actively recruiting them (and legitimately being in the conversation with them) . Your original assertion was that the situation was like football and we didn't even recruit the same players which is false. In football, you're correct in that we don't even bother recruiting the 4-5 star guys AU and UA are after. In basketball, that dynamic does not exist. We recruit the same players.

I'm not very aware of football recruiting but we do not get many 4 or 5 star guys in basketball. And Andy Kennedy was the one who told about the "pick your battles" term. Gene wanted AK but he was not sure AK would come here because he had a lot of other offers after NC State.

AK told him he was serious and we got him, probably because we could offer him HUGE minutes and huge shot attempts and the other schools could not.

AK was a very good player for us but a bit of a hot dog in my opinion.

He drove to the basket when it was not always our best bet. That may have been with Genes blessing but I thought a number of those drives we would have been better off if he passed the ball. Don't get me wrong, it was still a decent option because he would often get fouled and it would usually be 2 points. But we had other guys who were decent scorers too.

Back to the recruiting part....I think we get on a lot of these guys before they are SEC leans but when they become SEC leans, we are well advised to not spend an excess of our time chasing a dream we probably won't catch. And I don't have any reason to think we do. Mostly Im saying this to our fans.

4 and 5 star guys are not going to sign with UAB often. Maybe 1 every 8-10 years.

RE: Andy Kennedy resigning from Ole Miss
We aren't saying we sign 4 and 5 star guys yearly.(although Lee and now Boyce are recent 4* guys we've gotten) We also are not in on every 4 and 5 star guy Auburn and Alabama are. But we do go after guys (3*'s included) that both schools recruit. We have some good, young talent coming in next year, but we know that doesn't mean those guys will be ready from day 1. What I want to see from this class is good players come in and get better every year.

I'm not sure why you are blasting the program every chance you get. You sound more like a Bama fan who is telling us to know our role and recruit the players we are supposed to than a UAB fan who wants the program to succeed and do better every year.

And his memory of Andy Kennedy is faulty. Kennedy was mostly a spot up shooter due to the brace he wore. He drove to the basket some, it it was not a common practice.

None of the names you listed indicates that UAB is recruiting on a competitive level with the two P5 state universities. If William Lee had proven to be a dominant player in C-USA, getting him would qualify for that comparison, but he has not been that manifestly superior player for UAB. In fact, some knowledgeable Blazer fans have complained regularly that he disappears from some games. I'm just using your lists and hoping things will get better next season with the new recruits coming in.

Almost guaranteed that he never actually saw Andy Kennedy play.

Strong chance that Kennedy was shooting the ball whenever he touched it.

Andy Kennedy and later Robert Vaden and now William Lee were brought in with the expectations that they would be star players who would be "filling up the baskets" with their shooting prowess. While none of these were failures for UAB, they did not (perhaps could not) live up to the hype that preceded them onto the court. We are still glad they came.

Kennedy is the second all time leading scorer, which he accomplished in only three years. I think he did "live up to the hype".

I appreciate you trying to stick with the topic which is Basketball, and not turn it into a football or Bama thread, but there is also the option of just not commenting when it is something you know nothing about.

Was not around to see Andy Kennedy play. I would argue that Robert Vaden absolutely lived up to the hype during his junior season. He was incredible. He didn't not duplicate that as a senior.

You're apparently not the only one.

The transfer had a lot of hype, but we'd had bigger transfers (Cliff Pruitt). Once he wrecked his knee in the summer league, there was uncertainty he'd amount to much, but he adjusted his game. Jack Kramer probably got almost as much hype before that season: UAB was coming off its worst season ever (at the time) and had a new arena to open.

Gene did at times get frustrated with him getting under the basket - not for making Carlos Williams moves, but because he was so damned slow getting back on defense. Hell, *I* could have stopped him on a drive (this was before the space-age knee sleeve, and he wore like 75 pounds of iron). Gene wanted him to spot up, shoot, and immediately head back on D.

And most unbelievable: Kennedy had really, really good hair.
