Blazer Almanac - February 12
February 12

Busy slate of games on February 12 and it is a rare day that UAB has a losing record for that day. UAB is 5-9 in games played today.

1979 - UAB traveled to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins. The game was close throughout the contest, but Jacksonville hit a jumper with 4 seconds to go to give them the win 54-52. Greg Leet led UAB with 16 points.

1981 - The next three games played on this date start this way: UAB traveled to Charlotte to play the 49’ers... In 1981, Charlotte had lost 11 of their last 12 games. UAB was 17-5 and beat UNCC 73-57.

The big UAB story that day was not the game, but a verbal commitment by one of the most celebrated high school players in America. Ennis Whatley, of Phillips High School verbally committed to UAB. Wayne Martin, the Birmingham News beat writer also reported that UAB had good indication that Gerald Crosby of Parker, Charles Barkley of Leeds and Marvin Ray Johnson of Woodlawn would be signing as well. Martin reported that Whatley had told Bartow that he wanted to play the next year at UAB, and "you can go ahead and use my name. I'm coming." Whatley' high school coach, Alvin Brooks stated that the reported info was not correct, but Martin stood by his story, saying he had an "unimpeachable source." Of course, we know now that Whatley reniged and signed with Alabama. Crosby went to Georgia and Barkley went to Auburn. Only Marvin Ray Johnson signed with UAB. It should be noted had those players came to UAB, we probably would not have signed Steve Mitchell and Jerome Mincy. I like how it turned out.

1983 - UAB traveled to Charlotte to take on the 49ers. UAB opened strong, shooting 70% in the first 8 minutes. Lex Drum had the best game of his career. He scored 25 points to lead all scorers as UAB won 78-70.

1987 - UAB traveled to Charlotte to take on the 49ers. Charlotte had not beaten UAB since 1980, 15 straight losses. The game was tied at 37 at the half, but UAB came out of locker room in the second half and only shot 37% while Charlotte was shooting 53%. The 49ers began pulling away and won the game 71-83. UAB dropped to 16-9 and suddenly, UAB's bid for a 7th straight NCAA bid was in jeopardy.

1994 - UAB lost at Memphis 58-53. The Blazers were ranked 19th in the country and had an 18-3 record, its best record in history to that point. The game was a tight one with 4 ties and 4 lead changes in the second half. Memphis went ahead to stay at the 4:23 mark of the second half. The Tigers won 58-53. Robert Shannon led UAB with 20 points.

1996 - UAB hosted Southern Miss in a game originally scheduled for February 4, but postponed due to an ice storm. The game was tied at the half, but USM pulled away in the second half, leading by as much as 13 points. UAB cut it close a few times, but couldn't get the lead. Southern Miss won 67-64.

1998 - The Blazers traveled to Hattiesburg to play Southern Miss. this was a good USM team that would have 22 wins and a trip to the NIT tournament. UAB led by one at the half, but USM outscored UAB 44-17 in the second half. The Blazers lost 73-56. Cedric Dixon was the only Blazer in double figures with 17 points.

2000 - UAB hosted Tulane and lost 77-66. Eric Holmes had a career high 30 points.

2001 - The only non conference game played on this date was against Centenary in 2001. Blazers won in a rout 97-62.

2002 - UAB hosted TCU on this date in 2002. UAB was down three at the half, but went on a 19-8 run in the second half to take the lead. TCU came back and tied the game at 51 with 10:46 to go. The Horned Frogs then went on a 15-2 run, and UAB never threatened again. TCU won 78-68. Reserve Blazer Cedric Davis had the most unusual stat line for the game: zero points, 10 rebounds. This game would be Murry Bartow's last home loss at UAB.

2003 - The Blazers hosted South Florida on the date in 2003. The Bulls were making a second half comeback and had cut the UAB lead to one point when Coach Mike Anderson inserted Lee Cobb in the game. Cobb who had only scored 5 points all season, would lead the Blazers on a 13-0 run, scoring 8 points himself. UAB went on to win 85-67.

2005 - UAB lost at TCU 76-65.

2011 - The Blazers hosted Rice in a game where Aaron Johnson became the Blazers all time leader in Assists, passing Steve Mitchell with 604 assists. AJ had 9 assists, many of them to Jamarr Sanders, who had an incredible night as well with a career high 37 points, including 8 three pointers. UAB won the game 74-68.

2015 - UAB played North Texas in the Super Pit in Denton, Texas. The Blazers led for close to 30 minutes, but North Texas took advantage of 8 second half turnovers to come back and win 67-64.
