Memphis high school football class of 2019: An early look
Now that National Signing Day is officially in the books, it's time to look ahead to the Shelby County class of 2019, a group that could turn out to be one of the most talented the city has ever produced.

Players are listed in order based on their composite rankings on 24/7 Sports as of Tuesday.

Maurice Hampton
School, position: MUS, WR/DB

24/7 state ranking: 1

Size: 5-11, 190

Rundown: Exceptional two-way playmaker has been committed to LSU since his sophomore year. Hampton is also one of the state's top baseball prospects and is planning to play both sports in college but it's a long way until Signing Day 2019.

Bill Norton
School, position: CBHS, DE

24/7 state ranking: 2

Size: 6-6, 270

CBHS star Bill Norton has a list of offers that includes many of the nation's top programs.

Rundown: The 2017 Division II-AAA Mr. Football lineman winner picked up offers from Notre Dame and Texas A&M in the last few days to go along with an already-impressive list that includes Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State as well.

Eric Gray
School, position: Lausanne, RB

24/7 state ranking: 3

Size: 5-10, 185

Eric Gray of Lausanne has a chance to become the first player in Tennessee history to win three straight Mr. Football awards.

Rundown: IMG Academy's loss is Lausanne's gain as the two-time Mr. Football winner has elected to stay put for his senior year. Michigan, Ole Miss, Stanford and Tennessee are among many who have offered and Gray has said his list of finalists should arrive in April.

Devin Boddie
School, position: Lausanne, ATH

24/7 state ranking: 12

Size: 5-11, 165

Expect Devin Boddie to attract a lot of recruiting attention over the spring and summer months.

Rundown: Terrific all-around athlete who has offers from Vanderbilt, Virginia and Tulsa. Expect that number to increase dramatically over the spring and summer.

Trevis Hopper
School, position: Central, DT

24/7 state ranking: 15

Size: 6-2, 260

Rundown: Hopper won the Class 5A Mr. Football lineman award as a sophomore in 2016 and has continued his upward progress. Georgia, Auburn, Clemson, Arkansas and Tennessee highlight his impressive offer list.

Jaden Johnson
School, position: Kirby, QB

24/7 state ranking: 20

Size: 6-2, 208

Kirby quarterback Jaden Johnson discusses Louisville commitment

Rundown: The top quarterback prospect in the state, Johnson is cerebral, poised and can make the tough throws. He committed to Louisville in November but Cougars coach Chester Flowers told The Commercial Appeal that Georgia came in with an offer recently. Stay tuned.

Keveon Mullins
School, position: Whitehaven, WR

24/7 state ranking: 21

Size: 6-2, 200

Rundown: Mullins will play for the Tigers as a senior after catching 52 passes for 1,011 yards for East in 2017. His size and playmaking ability have already produced offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Missouri.

Kristian Williams
School, position: Southwind, DT

24/7 state ranking: 23

Size: 6-3, 280

Rundown: With linemate Jordan Davis heading to Alabama, Williams will have the spotlight all to himself in 2018. Tennessee, Indiana, Ole Miss and Louisville have offered with more certainly to come.

Others to watch: Tarique Barnes, LB, Cordova; Jackson Walker, QB, Briarcrest; Cormontae Hamilton, TE, Whitehaven; Melvin McBride, OL, Whitehaven

I wouldn't say not in contention. However, it is a tough sell to pick Memphis over some of the top teams in the nation. Especially if you actually have a shot to contribute to some of those teams. To go, knowing you will likely ride the bench for two, three or even four years (as many of our local players often do) seems ridiculous to me, but that is the brainwashing that is the sports world we live in.

It's also a tough sell competing with mid to lower level teams in the SEC
