MyBB Cincinnati Bearcats vs. SMU Mustangs Game Thread
Annnd the UC train keeps rollin' on down the tracks. Next stop - Dallas, Texas. Moody Coliseum. Sunday. 4 PM. ESPN. This should be a good game in a hostile environment but I like our chances on the road for this one. SMU currently 7 point dogs. Shake Milton's status remains "day-to-day" according to Coach Jankovich. Cats looking to extend two current streaks: 11 consecutive conference wins and 15 consecutive wins overall. However, as we all know Moody is a tough place to get a road win (SMU has only lost 5 times there since it was renovated) and their backs are against the wall at 5-6 in conference play. The Mustangs need a signature win on their resume. We provide that opportunity. Here are Cincinnati's head-to-head records against Southern Methodist:

7-5 All Time
3-2 L5
6-4 L10
-- L20
1-0 Current Streak

Here's a breakdown comparison between the two teams:

Southern Methodist

RE: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. SMU Mustangs Game Thread
From CBS Sports:

Quote:No. 6 Cincinnati wary of SMU's home presence

Sixth-ranked Cincinnati owns a 15-game winning streak and a three-game lead in the American Athletic Conference standings as it rolls into Dallas to play Southern Methodist on Sunday at Moody Coliseum.

But all the momentum the Bearcats have built over their successful two-month run could be lost in one complacent performance against the short-handed Mustangs.

Part of the challenge Sunday will be beating SMU on the road, a feat that Cincinnati hasn't accomplished since February 2015. The Mustangs are 13-1 at home this season and have lost just five of 86 games in their home gym since it was renovated and expanded prior to the 2013-14 season.

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin understands the importance of this game and how difficult it is to win in Dallas. The Bearcats have lost twice in a row at Moody Coliseum.

"We've got to be ready to take their best shot, ready for a hostile environment," Cronin said. "This is a game they probably need to win to get into the NCAA Tournament, so we would be foolish to think that they're not going to play unbelievably hard to give themselves a chance to get a quality win.

"I would give their home winning 80 percent to their coaching and play, and 20 percent to their crowd, maybe. But it's been good."

Cincinnati's most recent win was a 77-40 rout over UCF on Tuesday in its temporary home, at Northern Kentucky University, that pushed the Bearcats (22-2, 11-0 AAC) into the top spot in the nation for average margin of victory (20.4 points per game). Purdue ranks second at 19.8 ppg.

The Bearcats easily handled SMU in the first meeting this season, winning 76-56 at "home."

SMU (15-9, 5-6), the defending conference champion, has struggled mightily in recent weeks as it has dealt with injuries to key players and a tough stretch of AAC games.

Mustangs junior guard Shake Milton, who is averaging 18.0 points and was named conference preseason player of the year by the AAC's coaches, has missed the past two games with a hand injury and likely won't play on Sunday. SMU has lost three of its past four contests and is 0-2 without Milton in the lineup.

Mustangs coach Tim Jankovich said after SMU's 67-58 loss at Houston on Thursday that Milton's status is day-to-day.

"Shake is questionable for the Cincinnati game and could still be a week and a half away from where he needs to be," Jankovich said. "He's getting better, but I don't know when it's going to be good, where he's good to play and can be effective."

SMU is also down to only seven available scholarship players after junior guard Jarrey Foster (knee) and freshman forward Everett Ray (foot) were lost for the season to injuries. Foster was the Mustangs' second-leading scorer at 13.2 points per game when he went down.

Junior guard Jahmal McMurray has taken the Mustangs' reins in Milton's absence as the team leader. McMurray averaged double digits in scoring when he played at South Florida before transferring to SMU. He has averaged 19.7 points in SMU's past three and is averaging 12.1 points on the season.

Cincinnati will be the eighth opponent that is ranked or has received votes to face SMU this season; the Mustangs are 4-3 in the first seven of those games.

RE: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. SMU Mustangs Game Thread
From The Dallas Morning News:

Quote:Why SMU's game against No. 6 Cincinnati is Mustangs' last chance for at-large bid to NCAA tournament

SMU's 67-58 loss at Houston on Thursday night was the Mustangs' ninth defeat of the season. At 5-6 and in sixth place in the American Conference, SMU's chances of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament have been reduced to rubble.

If there is even a fingernail clipping of a chance to earn that ticket without winning the conference tournament, it comes on Sunday against No. 6 Cincinnati. With a fourth victory over a top-15 team and wins the rest of the way, the selection committee would at least have to consider SMU, even if the decision could swing either way.

It's the equivalent of a Hail Mary, but that's what SMU is left with after a series of injuries has led to losses in three of its last four games and six of its last nine.

The problem is that Sunday's game comes against the team that handed SMU its worst conference loss since the Mustangs joined the AAC in the 2013-14 season.

That game, a 20-point shellacking at Cincinnati, came when SMU was fully healthy with 10 scholarship players. The Mustangs shot 37.5 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 26 Cincinnati points. The Bearcats also benefited from 29 free throw attempts as it put away SMU.

"It's hard to simulate the way they defend because they got a couple defenses and matchups and a switching man, if you will," Jankovich explained. "It's hard to simulate that, and for us right now it's almost impossible because we don't have the numbers in practice."

Season-ending injuries to Jarrey Foster and Everett Ray weigh heavy on SMU both in games and practices. Leading scorer Shake Milton has missed the last two games with a right-hand injury.

Milton will be a game-time decision for Cincinnati, but he was unable to practice on Saturday. That left SMU with 10 players to practice: the seven-man rotation, two walk-ons and Isiaha Mike, a transfer in the middle of his redshirt season.

So technically that's enough for five-on-five, but it's hard to ask that second unit to play the part of the sixth-ranked team in the country. At one point Saturday, SMU's rotation scrimmaged against Mike, walk-ons James Pyle and Luke Wilfong, graduate manager Jon Ekey and team manager Rakan Musmar.

SMU hopes to get a little advantage Sunday from its home cooking. That's been the case in previous visits from Cincinnati, which is 1-3 in its last four trips to Moody Coliseum while averaging 56.3 points. Back then, SMU could depend on a deep roster of strong on-ball defenders like Sterling Brown, Ryan Manuel and Nick Russell.

Now SMU is left to rely on a medley of zone defenses as it compensates for its depleted roster. The one constant from Cincinnati's previous trips to Dallas is the Moody Coliseum atmosphere.

"It's pretty hard to play there," Jacob Evans, Cincinnati's leading-scorer, told reporters Friday. "It's going to be a tough environment. The fans are right behind the bench, but you've got to stay locked in on the court."

That alone won't be enough to beat the Bearcats, but SMU will take any edge it can get as it airs out a Hail Mary it hopes the selection committee catches in March.

Anything can happen...but I just don’t see an SMU win. They had much better players and quantity of them in prior UC losses there.

if anything gives me pause, it's that Cincy will have to run offense against a zone for virtually the entire game. if they clean the defensive glass and get out in transition, the ponies should be done before half. Otherwise i'm expecting a slug fest, including a bunch of home cooking for the ponies.

Odd calendar/schedule fact...

Exactly one year from tomorrow, UC’s record was also 22-2 when we lost to SMU @ Moody.

We also we're on a 15 game winning streak then too. Same story in 2014.

Makes me wonder who the hell keeps setting up our schedule like this.
