Balls check time
Time to see if our AD has the cahones to do what he needs to do. Another year of Wes and they won't draw flies. Looks like he's gonna break Sidney's record for losses for the season. Come on Chase and do what you need to do. Don't compound your mistake of hiring him. Just admit that you made a mistake, and fix it before it kills the program. Overall you've a very good job, don't let this one mistake ruin your legacy here.

I posted a couple of weeks ago that there was no way in hell, Wes doesn't come back for his third year. With each loss, I'm getting a little less confident in this prediction. I still think he'll be back, but he really needs to win a game or 2 before the end of this season to guarantee himself another year.

They're not just losing they are getting wooled around and aren't even competing with their opponents. Chasse seriously needs to do something. Wes is not a D1 caliber coach. They need a real coach to get the program back out of the abyss.

If the terms of his contract require us to buy out the 300K he would be owed for his third year it's not even worth talking about.

Why in the hell would you pay a guy with no head coach experience period a salary that you couldn't buy out, and especially one higher than Chris Beard made during his miracle year? Hell Flanigan didn't have a job when he came here. If you're gonna give him the head job, give it to him with a salary you could buy out if need be.

the fact that they would even consider 300k for Flanigan gives one the impression that the fix must have been in......They need to bite the bullet and get it over with. There is no telling how bad we could be next year. The guy simply can't coach at this level and I wonder if he could at any level.
The program is once again irrelevant. .

Your new coach is waiting....!!! He can restore Little Rock back to one of the best teams in the Sun Belt. Cinco Boone of Angelo State University. Google him.

Go Red Raiders....!!!!!!

I assume he has a "standard" contract. Not sure if a buyout would mean paying his whole salary for the final year or if contracts put a specific amount in there for a buyout (ex. 100K). Regardless, if there is a buyout involved he not going anywhere. Even if there isn't a buyout, I have always believed a new coach deserves 3, if not, 4 years. We are starting 3 freshman. This is a complete rebuild. A new coach would likely lose Lottie and Cocoran, and we would be starting from scratch next year again.

I seem to remember Chris Beard did a pretty good rebuilding job in one year. Your boy in his second year of his rebuild job has gotten worse each year. Doesn't look like he can coach or recruit. Never saw a fan who loves loser coaches as much as you. I too seem to remember that that you said Shields wasn't going anywhere when he suddenly fired. There is still a slim hope Chase will again do the right thing for this program, and correct his one screw up before it's too late.

Beard was left, Josh Hagins, maybe our best player in 20 years (we haven't had an NBA player since Derek, Joe Stephens, Pete Myers, and Myron Jackson, all more than 20 years ago) Mareik (who transferred to Big 12 Texas) and Roger Woods (All-Conference; first team all-tournament). Obviously, he added some pieces. Wes was left with some role players and had to start from scratch. Wes has recruited some good players, but the best ones are freshman. Can he coach them? Maybe not. I assume we'll know the answer at this time next season.

I did assume Chasse would make a coaching change, based on my conversations with him (not that he actually told my ya or nay, which obviously would have been inappropriate). I seem to remember he waited more than a week, after the season, to fire Shields. It was after about a week that I said it didn't look like he would be making a change. It did surprise me when it happened, but it was the timing more than anything else.

Oh, and nobody loves coaches that ditch a program they supposedly support more than you.

Nobody loves a winner more than I, and I don't consider a guy who leaves a job for a better job or more money as "ditching a program." You're one of the few fans I've known who falls in love with a losing coach, and wants then to stay around long after they have proven that they can't get the job done. No doubt you are a better fan than I, but I can spot a loser or a mediocre coach after watching him for a while, and I'm not afraid to say so, because I don't get to be pals with the coaches.

I don't understand where MJS is coming from on this "ditching a program" stuff either. It's almost like he thinks that a coach signs on for life with a program, and should stay forever, whether that is best for the coach or the program. And if a coach leaves for a better opportunity, it is somehow a personal affront. Go figure!

Not a personal affront. Just an affront to a program I deeply care about. I will always "love" Mike Newell for turning down Marquette because of his dream of making us a nationally relevant program. If he had the Stephens Center (or even Verizon Arena), the financial resources we have now, and our current administration he just might have done it. Could we have become Wichita State or Gonzaga? Maybe, maybe not, but that was his (and my) dream. The main thing those schools have is coaches who love where they are at and were willing to stay there despite numerous offers from "blue blood" programs. Beard re-ignited that dream for a few of us diehard fans for a couple of months, but was gone before we even knew what happened. Chasse gave him his "shot" and, before his one season was even over, was trying his hardest to put together a very competitive financial package. I believe the only way this program could ever move to a higher level is with a great coach who wants to make us "big-time" and is willing to make a long-term commitment. Changing coaches every year or two will never do it. While I realize the likelihood of that happening is very small, excuse me for wanting success for our program.

I don't think you'll ever find a great coach who will stay at a program long enough to do what you're talking about. Tp be honest I really never had that dream for our program. Just want to win. You have to be somewhat lucky to find great coaches one after another, but you won't do it for sure just by moving up an assistant on your bench, just to save having to do a coaching search. Men's basketball is the lifeblood of our program. Screw it up like it is now, and you're dead in the water. Too bad women's basketball isn't our lifeblood here, or we'd be in great shape.

I doubt you will argue with the fact that the women's team is where they are for only one reason- Joe Foley. He has chosen to stay here despite offers from bigger schools (I can't give you definitive examples, but it would be crazy to believe he hasn't had offers). Is there a men's coach out there who would do what Joe has done for us? Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to dream.

That's why I was hopeful when we hired Wes. His son his playing basketball for his grandfather- how cool is that? Wes wouldn't have left after a great year or two, even if he had great offers. Some things are more important than money. Maybe you are right that hiring him was a mistake. But the fat lady hasn't sung yet.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet but she has her party dress on. Hopefully she can belt out the notes and move on. This program isn't going anywhere with Wes. He looked pretty good on paper and him being a hometown guy is sweet and all but as men's basketball supports the other sports we need someone that can put a product on the floor that will put more than 2000 folks in the seats and create some excitement for the program.

Some probably call me a fool, but I'm not that big a fool. I'd never argue with you over Joe Foley. No doubt the best college coach in the state. No doubt too that Arkansas would love to have hired Joe, but they would never admit that they'd like to have a guy who had previously been at LR.

There is little doubt that when Joe retires women's basketball will be no better than middle of the pack, in the Belt, like all our other sports. Our success in women's basketball is 100% because of Coach Foley.

You don't think Sandra Rushing could get the job done in Little Rock? She already has 500 + wins. Been to the NCAAs past 2 years.

And why would she make a lateral move from Conway to Little Rock?
