RE: Rice Game thread
Tonight was just an ugly game, in part because Rice plays that way, nothing junks up a game like a match-up zone, but a big part of it was that our shots just weren't falling.

We had one stretch where we did not play good defense, but besides that the effort was there. We were just sloppy with the ball and had a poor shooting night.

How did you find out? Its reasonable speculation but was it mentioned after the game or did you ask the coaches or him?

Our outside shooting was not that bad. Nate 4 of 7, Nick 1 of 3. Perry 1 of 2.
Lee 0-1.

Scootie 0-3. Gueye 0-2 but I don't think these guys need to be shooting them.

Still not playing well, but hopefully the spurt in the last 5 minutes will carry over to next week. Norton and Darling have been struggling with their shot but made them when they mattered tonight. Looks like Cokely's back issues have gotten worse.

My answer is that the UAB players are a fraternity and the public are not members of it. It was a get together to play some pickup ball and fellowship with each other, not perform for spectators. UAB is trying to keep players connected to the program. Some may not want to perform in front of a crowd, given their age and the shape some are in.

That's just supposition on your part. The former football players don't seem to have that issue.

Yes it is. It makes sense though.

To a degree, but most event details aren't decided after inviting the participants. It's more often than not, here's the plan, come if you'd like to participate.

UAB hit a couple of crucial 3 pointers (Norton and Darling) and several free throws down the stretch.

During the last 5 minutes, UAB outscored Rice 19-5. During the last 2 minutes, UAB outscored Rice 7-0.

UAB finished the game on a 10-0 run.

This is part of the problem. The fact we could do that at the end proves the ability is there. Last night, we were playing a bad enough team that the spurt at the end was enough to get it done. We’ve had similar strong performances at the end of many games, including recent losses to UNT, UTSA, etc.

Yes it is always a problem when you finish strong and hold your opponent scoreless at the end.

I think he played a bit on Thursday in our loss to NTSU. What happened in the past 48 hours since then? We probably could have used his defensive skills last night against Rice.

Maybe but i saw all the guys and they looked in pretty good shape I suggest you drive down some saturday and check out some of our players where you can speak with authority on our team!

RE: Rice Game thread
Last night during the game, I posted UAB is terrible shooting 3’s and free throws. Of course UAB hit two 3-pointers and several free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

UAB is 74th in the nation shooting free throws, at 74.2%. That’s far removed from being number 1 in the nation as UAB was several weeks ago, but still not bad. However, the numbers have fallen off in conference games, where UAB is only 9th at 68.6%.

My perception, over the past two years, is UAB is not much of a 3-point threat. With Cokley the Beast down low, it would be fantastic to have an outside presence. I guess my perception has been compromised by all the teams we have played that have made 10+ threes against us.

Well, right now we are averaging 6.6 made 3’s per game, with a shooting % of 33.8%. Looking at the past 11 seasons, which goes back to Vaden’s first year, 6.6 is right around the median. The 2012 season, we averaged 7.7 3-pointers, while in 2014 we only averaged 5.1 made threes per game.

The shooting percentage is the median for the past 11 seasons. The best was Vaden’s first season at 37.5%.

The stats don’t support my perception. Imagine that!

I've been in Northern Virginia working for most of the season. I am heading to Seattle Monday. I am touched that so many are concerned about this. I have watched every game home and away online or on TV though.

When I do make it to a game, I'll be sure to clock in with DMBlazer though since he apparently checks if I am there.
