Blazer Almanac - February 9
February 9

The Blazers are 9-3 in games played on February 9.

1984 - UAB won at Charlotte 79-70.

1985 - The fans at Western Kentucky and Old Dominion were not the only fan base in the mid 1980's guilty of throwing things on the court. On this date in 1985, UAB hosted Western Kentucky. With 13:53 left in a very physical game, UAB led 48-42. Steve Mitchell stole the ball and was driving in for a lay up when WKU's 6'8" Clarence Martin hammered him to the floor as Mitchell hung in midair. Martin had been guilty a year earlier of breaking Jerome Mincy's nose. The UAB crowd showered the floor with cups and ice in rage. Martin was immediately ejected with an intentional flagrant foul. Mitchell was shaken up, but uninjured, although he lay on the court holding his wrist. With Martin gone, and UAB fired up, the Blazers went on a 14-0 run. Jerome Mincy scored 11 of his 15 points after Martin was ejected. UAB won 77-62. Mitchell and UAB had received an honor during the week of this game when Dick Vitale named Steve Mitchell on his Midseason All American Team, along with Chris Mullen of St. John's, Len Bias of Maryland, Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma and Patrick Ewing of Georgetown.

1987 - South Florida came to Birmingham, having lost a record 12 straight road games. The game was tied at 32 at the half, but USF went on a 20-5 run in the second half. They snapped their road losing streak with a 81-67 win at UAB. Free throws played a big role. South Florida shot 37 of 45 from the line, which set a school record for most free throws made. UAB shot 11 of 15 from the line.

1989 - UAB won at Western Kentucky 80-70. With the Mars Bar Incident in the past, a new saga in the Blazer-Hilltopper series began. This time it was Jack Kramer verses the WKU fans, a show that went on all three years that Jack Kramer was a Blazer. He told reporters that "the crowds ride Alan (Ogg) pretty badly. That can get to a normal person." He said "but I'm not normal. It fires me up." Kramer sprained his ankle three minutes into the game and had to leave. His replacement played poorly and Western Kentucky built and 11 point first half lead. Kramer reentered the game on a heavily taped ankle, He began hitting shots including a three pointer at he halftime buzzer to pull UAB within three. As the Blazers went to the locker room, he taunted the Hilltoppers fans and the feud was on.

In the second half, WKU took a ten point lead five minutes into the second half. UAB came back and went on a 23-3 run, and the Blazers won 80-70. Kramer had 20 points, and the enmity of Hilltoppers fans for several more years.

1991 - UAB defeated Jacksonville 84-68. Andy Kennedy was 5-5 from three point range in the first half and finished 7-10 from three. He had 31 points for the game, but only played 30 minutes due to foul trouble.

1993 - The only time UAB and Auburn have played a game that was not in November or December was on this date in 1993. The game was played in February because the NCAA had temporarily passed a rule stating that the season could not start until the week after Thanksgiving. This series had traditionally been played Thanksgiving weekend before the Iron Bowl, so both parties agreed to move it to February.

Tommy Joe Eagles was in his first year as Auburn coach. It was the 10th anniversary of the UAB Auburn series and a sold out Bartow Arena crowd of 8550 witnessed a nice gesture by UAB backfire before the game. To honor the anniversary and the retirement of Auburn AD Pat Dye, UAB decided to present Dye with a gift to thank him for giving his OK to start the series. Before the game started, they presented him with a UAB rocking chair. They offered Dye a chance to say a few words. He took the microphone, turned to the UAB bench and barked at Gene Bartow "I hope Tommy Joe kicks your ass tonight,"

It was an effective motivating speech. Auburn took a 10-2 lead and although they tied the game several times could not get the lead. Auburn won 84-76. After the game, Eagles credited Dye with the win. "He did more to fire up the team in 30 seconds than I did in 30 minutes"

1994 - UAB won on the road vs DePaul 78-73, despite 37 points by Depaul's Tom Kleinschmidt.

2000 - UAB lost at Saint Louis 78-61.

2008 - UAB improved to 11-0 at home verses UTEP with a 81-73 win. Lawrence Kinnard had 23 and Robert Vaden had 17 points.

2011 - The Blazers defeated Marshall on the road 64-48. Cameron Moore had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

2013 - Two years later Marshall game to Birmingham to face the Blazers. Rod Rucker had 18 points and 10 rebounds as UAB won 75-61.

2016 - UAB hosted Charlotte and got solid performances from Chris Colley and William Lee. Cokley scored 19 points on 9-12 shooting, and William Lee had 15 points and 12 boards. UAB won the game 82-69.
