While We Were Sleeping
UAB changed its vision statement to include knowledge that can change the world crap.

So we can be reminded in our mission statement of the time when our president killed football and tried to forever change the university.

While the "Knowledge that will change your world" campaign launched shortly after Watts became president (like...a month after), it was formulated a while before that.
I was a big fan of the campaign then, and I think it is a good thing to have as part of our vision.

While We Were Sleeping
I don't mind the slogan, but for it to be the entirety of the license plate design is an abomination.

RE: While We Were Sleeping
This reminds me- I was thinking about the license plate the other day. I remembered when they changed it to the current design, myself and others made a fuss about it. Then when the football fiasco happened, it seemed as if the license plate change was a sign. I say all that to say, the change went into effect in 2013, and I thought I remembered someone saying that university plates are changed every 5 years. Which would mean we would be due for a change this year? Maybe? Is this ringing a bell with anyone else? Because if they went back to some iteration of the dragon logo, I would probably get one again.

RE: While We Were Sleeping
I think that it is time to start making waves about the license plate. Do it before the new plate is due and they have one all ready, so that resistance is their first thought. We need to be finding out who actually has power over that decision and start a social media campaign, build some pressure.

"Knowledge that will change your world" is a little hokey, but my biggest gripe with it was always that I thought it was Ray's baby. I can let that roll by. Every time I see one of the current tags I get mad again.

Who here used to have a UAB tag and let it go after it changed to the current version?

/raises hand.

Oh I definitely had one, but it's on the wall now.

I support a different cause with my plate currently, but if we could go back to Blaze or something similarly cool I would happily switch back to UAB tags.

Don't like the current one for several reasons: it's ugly, boring, plain, Ray's idea, etc.

/raises hand for having had one, letting it go, would consider getting another.

It's not that unusual for a university slogan.

RPI's is "Why not change the world?"

But the plates suck. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find enough interested alumni to get a UAB plate here in Maryland, So I just have my "UABBLZR" tag.

You pretty much stated it better than I tried to in the original post.

I still have my dragon tag and they will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Agree we need to make waves now for a good looking plate. That was all part of the move to de-emphasize athletics.

The alumni association office is responsible for submitting designs to the state.

I'm in the same boat. I have several of my old UAB tags hanging in my man room, and I too have plates supporting another cause ever since the switch. They're just dull. I would go back to UAB plates in a heartbeat.

UAB is supposed to be about more than any sports team, but the dragon logo is not just about any one sport. The dragon is UAB's most recognizable logo.

My post has nothing to do with the dragon logo. It is related to the initial post that equated the slogan with the shutting down of football.

Are you still sour about the football/basketball school thing?

I never was. My statement is self explanatory. Football, basketball etc are secondary to what UAB is for.

That is so insightful. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I honestly don't know where we would be without your wisdom.
