The best Sun Belt bball team of all time?
"Best" Sun Belt Basketball team (current members only) from 1978 to current?
(NCAA seeding started 1978, however, earlier teams are welcome to be discussed)

Men's

Women's

Go!
EDIT:*Got to be current member, but can be before you joined Sun Belt.

Im a relatively new Sun Belt conference bball fan, so thought I might learn a little history.

Yep. WKU and La Tech held their history over our heads long enough.

What a depressing subject for App fans. This is the best team we've fielded as a SBC member and I doubt we finish in the top half. Sorry guys.

RE: The best Sun Belt bball team of all time?
That's tough...

I can think of four men's teams that were extremely good, in no particular order:

1982 UAB (finished #17), made it to the Elite 8
1985 VCU (finished #11), made it to the 2nd Round
1993 New Orleans (finished #18), made it to the 1st Round
2008 WKU (finished #22), made it to the Sweet 16

Maybe a candidate is the 1980-1981 South Alabama team. South started the season 14-1 with a win over #7 Ohio State in which the announcers on tv said if we had Notre Dame on our jerseys we’d be ranked in the top 5. The poll back then was a top 20 poll and USA would find itself ranked for 8 straight weeks, climbing as high as #11.

USA didn’t win the SBC tournament and at the time the NCAA Tournament only took 48 teams. Having tied with VCU and UAB for the regular season title but with UAB and VCU meeting for the conference tournament championship, those two teams went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. USA was 1-1 against both of those teams in the regular season. UAB and VCU went 3-2 in the NCAA Tournament.

South went on to play in the NIT, beating UTA and Georgia before falling by 1 point to Tulsa in the quarterfinals. South finished the season 24-6. 2 of the 6 losses were by 1 point and another one by 3 points (the regular season loss to UAB).

Easy. 1972-73 Cajuns. Ranked #4 in the nation, roster included 3 NBA players.

The Cajuns also had a team in the mid 80's that reached the final 4 of the NIT.

Nice. Who was on that team that made it to NBA. Quality wins that year?

I had forgotten about this though...
Quote:In August 1973, Louisiana—then known as Southwestern Louisiana—became only the second school to receive the so-called "death penalty" from the NCAA. The basketball team was found guilty of over 120 violations. Most of them involved small cash payments to players, letting players borrow coaches' and boosters' cars, letting players use university credit cards to buy gas and buying clothes and other objects for players. However, the most severe violations involved massive academic fraud. In the most egregious case, an assistant coach altered a recruit's high school transcript and forged the principal's signature. Several boosters arranged for surrogates to take college entrance exams for prospective recruits. The NCAA Council found the violations so egregious that it wanted to throw Southwestern Louisiana out of the NCAA altogether. It settled for scrubbing the Ragin' Cajuns' 1972 and 1973 NCAA Tournament appearances from the books and canceling the 1973–74 and 1974–75 seasons.

Werent your violations in 2007 and our violations around that same time involving the same compliance officer? We hired them after you let them go, right?

Yep.

For Troy, the best Division II season would be 1993 when Troy made it all the way to the NCAA Finals, losing to Cal State-Bakersfield. They finished 27-5 that year with a #4 ranking in the AP Poll.

In Division I, the best season was probably 2003 while we were in the A-Sun. Troy went 26-6, won the A-Sun regular season and tournament titles, received Top 25 votes, got a big win over Arkansas, and went to the NCAA Tournament (just to lose to #12 Xavier by 11 points).

a buddy and I flew his plane out to that game from ft. worth. a sportscaster from one of the tv networks named Gerry Oher rode with us to do a story on fanatic fans. we sat on the row behind the mavs and the locals yelled right in our faces as loud as they could and threw stuff at us and some spit at us for the whole game. kinda like being at an arkansas game. an errant pass in the final seconds ended our late game rally. a couple of guys from that team went on to play after college. Ralph Mcpherson was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and Al Culton went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters

You're right, we'd have to go with the tournament team out of those two. The team three years ago showed well against a very, very good Xavier team in the second round but couldn't get it done...fairly close to a Sweet 16 team. But it seems like there was more depth/raw talent on the 2000-01 team that beat Wisconsin in the first round (if we're going with teams that were non-Sun Belt at the time).

But the GSU team before the Baylor-beating team that blew that lead against ULL in the conference finals...that was a more talented team than the team in the video. That was the TEAM. I'll never forget the last five minutes of regulation in that game...heartbreaking.

Oh yeah, totally agree. The 2013-14 team was amazing. RJ, Harrow, Devonta, and Manny. Wow. The 2014-15 was very good also, and I wonder how far we could've gone int he NCAAT with Harrow healthy. However, the 2000-01 may have been more talented than both of them.

In the modern Sun Belt, the best team was 2008 WKU. They entered as a 12 seed (Which is about as high as we'll ever get as a league) and made the Sweet 16. Finished in the top 25.

In terms of the Post 2012 Sun Belt. No question Little Rock a couple years ago. Won 30 games, which is absolutely ridiculous, and pulled off a 12-5 upset over Purdue in the NCAA Tournament.
