Again noooo. As much as I want Marshall to play in the south, I would rather go back to thr MAC than play in a glorified FCS league

In the long run I would just as soon have JMU as Marshall.

By all means do that. This conference is a joke compared to what it used to be. Other than long time rival USM and building rivals WKU MT, there is nothing worth staying in this dying conference for. You start combining with too many FBS newbies and an FCS pull up, the conference reputation will get even worse. I'm not the only one who sees this. No offense to Charlotte or ODU, I personally saw the light when those two came up for the list of additions, ODU seems to be coming along nicely. Regardless, no one else in big boy football cares, so go ahead and add more to that. I hope my school would make a decision to do something else than that. JMU was passed over for ODU for a reason.

If FAU can’t play Marshall we might as well disband our football program and shut down the University. No, but seriously I say let them go if they take the complaining fans with them. I’ll miss the good fans though. The solution would be to send coastal north and keep all 3 of USM/Troy/UAB. Enjoy the MAC.

I can understand a team with the history and past success of Marshall not liking the idea of being in a conference with these recent FBS arrivals, but it does seem to me that the alignment in question would be comparable to the MAC. And these newbies all have drive and determination to be better, whereas the MAC has been mostly lousy for decades. I think CUSA is just as good as the MAC now and has a much higher long term ceiling. It just doesn't have the teams with as much name recognition at this time.

CUSA is better than the MAC. 9/10 Floridians have no idea what the MAC is, and couldn’t name one of thier schools. I’m sure it’s the same for the CUSA in the North. Both conferences have the same level of national recognition, so it comes down to performance. MAC was the worst conference last year, the way Toledo and Akron lost earned them that title. In the G5 it’s all about performance, history only gets you so far when people barely know your name.

I've never understood the ignorant fan argument. If people in Florida have never heard of the MAC, not likely, then that's on them. You're either a college football fan or you're not. I mean, your team's bowl was vs a MAC team. They didn't know who they were? or their conference? It isn't unreasonable for anyone that watches college football to be able to name ten FBS conferences and at least 4-5 teams in each one. If they can't do that then they really aren't fans. They're just killing time on Saturdays wearing blue and red or whatever colors their team wears.

RE: Any word on C-USA tv deals?
The whole point I was trying to make is it does not matter how much better or as good as we think we are compared to a long standing conference, it doesn't matter. I do not disagree about being as competitive as the MAC, but they have been around longer, not much change in membership, in turn they have a better reputation right now. We could bring all these new to fbs programs together, be as competitive as other G5 conferences, but be looked down upon, its all about identity and reputation, this conference lacks an identity and the reputation hasn't recovered from last realignment. Add more to that, reputation takes more of a dive. Its not that hard to figure out.

Honestly dude, just because you value reputation doesn’t make you right. Personally, I prefer potential. My proposition made geological sense, satisfied rivalries, and was a good mix of potential and reputation. You talk so much about the value of being “long standing”, but new schools like UCF and USF have eclipsed the MAC.

Sorry but most college football fans are casual P5 fans. Half of the people I asked to go to the bowl game with me had no idea Akron had a University. I got questions like “Are they a division 1 team?” and “didn’t LeBron go there?”. If you think the MAC is a trending topic in South Florida, you are wrong.

It's insane is what it is.

I'd be fine with something like this:

East

Marshall
FAU
ODU
Charlotte
App State
Ga Southern

West

MTSU
WKU
So Miss
La Tech
UAB
Arkansas State

If La Tech doesn't want to join then bring in 1 of Troy/South Alabama/Liberty

I think LaTech would join that. I can't imagine a better option for them if that was put together. Unless they joined a Texas league of UNT, Rice, Texas State, UTEP, UTSA, NMSU, and whatever else they could scrounge up.

Like I said, that's on your friends being ignorant and not on the MAC. It's a bad argument to try to disparage a conference. Reflects more on the quality of fan in your area. Might explain why you guys have empty stadiums. Of course a lot of people in Florida are from the North East where zero good college football is played, so that might have a lot to do with it. I mean they have Buffalo, UConn, Syracuse, and Boston College. Pretty much it at the FBS level. And they're good like once every 50 years.

That’s silly. Not everyone’s life revolves around college football. They don’t need to know all FBS conferences and most teams. It’s 1 sport, among many. Do you forget people have jobs, wives, kids and other interests? What is college football is low among their hobbies and they’re a just a UM fan. Do you expect them to fire off MAC teams at will?

UAB, Marshall, WKU, MT, F_U's, ODU. Plus appst, gaso, gast. Nice 10 member conference. But bring along FGCU, Belmont, Evansville, Charlotte (oly only) as quality basketball adds. Then you add 2 football only schools: Army and UMass. Now THAT'S insane.

I'd be fine with something like this:

East

Marshall
FAU
ODU
Charlotte
App State
Ga Southern

West

MTSU
WKU
So Miss
La Tech
UAB
Arkansas State

If La Tech doesn't want to join then bring in 1 of Troy/South Alabama/Liberty
I'd love that division and we'd still be in the conference with Marshall! FIU is screwed by this, and seem to be on the move now though.

Where they already play weekday football? What's the benefit?

Why? ESPN3 is free to subscribers of certain providers, can cord cutters even get it? Since they don't charge for it they likely don't pay for games on it. Put CUSA.tv on Roku and other streaming services and many more would have access to it. Charge $100 a year or $10 a month ad the conference could actually make money off of it.

Why? Why would we basically create the same thing we have now just with different teams?

The Florida schools are going to have to show me more than one season to prove to me they are truly committed - and neither still seem to give a crap about basketball. Georgia St is an albatross for football. Ga Southern is now starting to realize it's not as easy as they thought it was going to be. And App State is abysmal in basketball.

If you look at this league arrangement just for one year it's pretty good. Ga State actually made a bowl. The Florida schools did well in football. The league would rank 8th in RPI in basketball. But extend it out the last three years and see what it looks like. The RPI for this as a league would be 15th, 19th and 16th over the previous three years. That looks pretty much exactly like what we already have.

If Selig, Stewart, and Massaro (and I might even throw Ingram in there) are going to get together and make this happen they need to create the best possible mix of schools who are committed and dedicated to football and basketball. I would say pick one between Ga Southern and App State but not both. Both are historically cellar dwellers in basketball and there is no reason to add that much risk to a new league. Same for FIU and FAU. Pick the breadwinner. Both aren't needed. Add back in La Tech. And probably Southern Miss. Or perhaps steal Ohio from the MAC, which is possible if you are selling competing for the Access Bowl and at-large bids by putting the right mix of schools together. Even with Norfolk to Ruston some degree of geographical symmetry is retained. If you are looking for basketball only members then and only then would you consider Georgia State. GSU and Belmont would be good basketball only members (though I'm not convinced it would be necessary). In fact, I would say adding basketball only schools wouldn't add much benefit in relation to revenue sharing.

Of even greater concern, preliminary 2018 football television schedules are typically announced in early April. Thats just a couple of months away. You have to think this thing is going to get wrapped up pretty soon. That said, ESPN Plus is in its very early stages. Maybe thats part of the hold up---because I'd think that ESPN would pay for CUSA content for that platform in the belief it wold attract subscribers to the new service.

It wasn't announced until May 25 a couple of years ago. https://inside.uncc.edu/news-features/20...v-packages
