Blazer Almanac - February 8
February 8

Today, UAB is at home verses North Texas. The Blazers are 3-2 vs North Texas. They are 2-0 in Bartow Arena. The biggest win for UAB came the last time the two teams played at Bartow in 2016, when UAB won by 21 points. Chris Cokley has averaged 11.3 in the three games he has played against the Mean Green. William Lee has averaged 12 points in his three games against them, including 19 last year.

The Games
UAB is 7-5 in games played on this date. The Blazers have lost four of the last five, dating back to 2003. Most played opponent is Memphis, and the Blazers are actually 2-1 vs. The Tigers. UAB is 6-2 at home on this date.

1979 - UAB traveled to Mobile to play South Alabama for the first time. Although Gene Bartow was in his first year at UAB, he was being mentioned as possibly returning to Memphis to replace Wayne Yates, who had just resigned under pressure. He denied interest in the job, but it would not be the last time that he would be mentioned for a job.

The Blazers were playing in a very hostile environment verses South Alabama. The Jaguar band would blare music every time UAB had the ball. South Alabama jumped out to a big lead, but UAB made a big comeback, scoring 15 points in 14 minutes. UAB had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but missed a jumper. South Alabama won 71-69.

1986 - UAB hosted South Carolina in a nationally televised game on NBC. It was the last regular season home game for Steve Mitchell, Jerome. Mincy, Archie Johnson and Jack Gordon. These seniors had presided over some of UAB's greatest moments. They had won the Great Alaskan Shootout, made the Sweet 16, won 92 games in 4 years, yet they never won a regular season Sun Belt title. They had effectively ruled out a regular season title in their senior year, because they had dropped two straight and was in 3rd place. This game was a good break for them. UAB completely dominated South Carolina who was a member of the Metro Conference at the time. UAB led 40-22 at the half, and won the game 83-54. Jerome Mincy led with 21 points.

1990 - UAB welcomed a familiar face to Birmingham when VCU came on this date in 1990. The new coach was Sonny Smith, who the Rams had lured away from Auburn by doubling his salary. A huge media blitz touted the program as "VCU Basketball - Sonny and Hot." The forecast was off because the Rams were 8-11 on the year. UAB was playing without Andy Kennedy, who had a scratched cornea. He wasn't needed because UAB was the sunny and hot team. UAB led as much as 34 points and won 74-51. Alan Ogg scored 17 points and had 8 blocks.

1992 - the Blazers traveled to Saint Louis as a struggling team. They had lost four of the last six games against D1 teams. Coach Bartow had turned his anger onto the media. He had closed practices and refused to allow players talk to reporters before games. He accused Kevin Scarbinski of tearing down the UAB program after UAB had lost to DePaul, a tirade that Scarbinski remember 26 years later when he retired. The loser of this game would be in the Great Midwest cellar. UAB won the game 78-74. Elbert Rogers had 27 points.

1997 - UAB defeated DePaul 71-56. Damon Cobb led the Blazers with 14. Cedric Dixon had 11.

1998 - UAB hosted Memphis having lost 4 of their last 5. The Tigers had won 6 of their last 7. UAB took the lead five minutes into the game and did not relinquish it. Blazers won 88-77. Cedric Dixon led the Blazers with 22 points.

2002 - UAB hosted Memphis still smarting from a 21 point beating they took in Memphis a couple of weeks previous. The Blazers had tried to run with Memphis but had been beaten 102-81. John Calipari had said, "We were running. They were getting cramps." The Tigers came to Birmingham 20-4 and undefeated in conference. UAB was 10-12 and Murry Bartow was a little more than a month away from being fired. Bartow decided to slow the game down since running with the Tigers hadn't worked.

UAB never trailed in the game. They took an early 12-4 lead and then just ran clock. The Blazers also played great defense holding Memphis to 30% from the field. UAB won the game 64-46. Mo Finley led UAB with 19 points.

2003 - UAB lost at home to Tulane 75-72.

2006 - On this date, UAB scored the second fewest points in its history in a 65-37 loss to UTEP in El Paso. UAB made only 7 baskets in the first half and 7 in the second half. The leading scorer for UAB, Marvett McDonald was held scoreless on an 0-9 night. Only Squeaky Johnson scored in double figures with 10 points. Probably the lowest point of the Mike Anderson era.

2007 - Memphis returned to Birmingham, ranked eighth in the country. Blazers turned the ball over 20 times and did not ever challenge. Memphis had jumped out early, going on a 24-5 run in the first half. Jeremy Hunt with the Tigers scored 25 points in the first half, on his way to a 30 point game. Tigers won 70-56. The game was delayed 30 minutes because a Memphis player had broken the backboard on a pregame dunk.

2012 - UAB defeated Southern Miss at home 71-61. Southern Miss came into the game 20-3 and this was only their second loss in 18 games. The game was tied at 49 with 8 minutes to play when UAB went on a 7-0 run. They never trailed after that. Cameron Moore had perhaps the best night of his career, scoring27 points on 12 of 15 shooting. Southern Miss coach, Larry Eustacy admitted "We had no answer for Moore.

2014 - UAB lost at Florida Atlantic 82-71. Rod Rucker had 19 for UAB. Chad Frazier had 18, but was 5 of 20 from the field.
