Larry's coaching career was pretty solid up until his health issues began taking their toll.

While he probably wasn't considered one of the Top 10 coaches in the country during his prime, he did win his fair share of games and was always a stand-up sort of human being.

Between what he did to help bring the city of Memphis together during his college playing days and the positive influence he had on players during his lengthy AC tenures at both UAB and Memphis along with his HC run at Memphis, Larry's opportunity at Memphis really can't be compared to Penny's potential future.

Unlike Larry's decade of assistant coaching prior to taking the top job at Memphis, Penny has ZERO experience at coaching and recruiting at the major college level in ANY capacity. It would be an absolute crapshoot for Penny to begin his college coaching career endeavoring to fix the broken foundation that currently describes the downtrodden Memphis basketball program.

Larry stepped on the wrong toes towards the end...

If he hadn't have done that he would have lasted a little longer.

I really believe his health challenges were a root cause of his final few years of struggle on and off the court.

What we all want is someone to make our BB program better.

It won't be hard to get some instantaneous results in the recruiting arena with Penny.

Most are going to leave, if Tubby is given another year. shrug

That would be the dumbest move ever. Not surprising that you endorse the idea.

I beat you guys to the punch on that. I suggested to Penny and then the agency recommending him that he be paid One Penny his first season and backload the rest in the the remaining years of his contract. Have Nike do a commercial with Lil Penny scolding Penny that he should have held out for at least a dollar. My only compensation for I think a pretty good idea is that I get season tickets behind the Tigers bench. I threw this out as soon as Penny name was being seriously speculated for the job.

If Penny had not of come along Larry would have been gone several years earlier. The program was on a downward spiral but no one wanted to be the man to cut ties. Two years before Penny 18 and 17 wins the year after 13 wins.

Larry's health was in serious decline his final two seasons on the job. If he was healthy, there's no reason to think his coaching ability would've deteriorated either.

15 months before he was fired he had the tigers ranked 3rd in the country

The year he was fired he beat #4 Michigan, Top 10 Louisville TWICE, #9 Cinci and #23 Tulane...5-0 against ranked teams.
