We lose Forte but......we end up possibly better off with Montre Bonner
Three-star defensive end Isaiah Forte (Carver High, Ala.) signed with UAB instead of the Tigers but junior college defensive end Montre Bonner, who can play immediately, did sign with Memphis. This is a new name that I had not seen before.
Bonner, from Fullerton Community College (Calif.) is 6-3, 260 lbs. and had a monster sophomore year with 14 sacks and two fumble recoveries while being named a first team All-America selection by the California Community College Football Coaches. He also had 11 sacks his freshman year.

There is not much on him that I could find. Maybe he is a late bloomer who was not recruited in high school. Maybe he is illegal.

Bonner is explosive. Should play immediately. Would love to have had Forte but we need immediate help pressuring the QB. Could have an effective pass rush with swamp donkey and Bonner. Always preferable to have defensive front pressure as opposed to blitzing a linebacker to pressure the QB. The downside is when your ends are "blowing and going" you need strong nose guard and linebacker play to stop the run. We should have both. I think our defensive front will be very good next year. If we find a QB we could be looking at another 10 win or more season.

And we haven't talked about Jackson Dillon pass rushing, if he's healthy!!

Hopefully you were talking about somebody prior to this post... NOBODY holds out starters in the first half of game one. Truth that most improvement is from game one to game two, which in last season's case was going to be UCF. Did you honestly think any coach would hold out starters in the first game, regardless of weather, so that they could play one of the stronger (didn't know they would be the strongest) team in the AAC in game two?

Glad you said it...
And good luck convincing a player to sit out the first game of the season when he has been chomping at the bit all year to get out there.

Those players weren't needed in game one....regardless of how much a player is "chompin at the bit", coaches make the overall decision, and injuries are evaluated by trainers and medical staff. This is NOT high school....We needed those players later in the year more than earlier, especially if they weren't as close to 100% as it turned out... Don't know about Gentry's status, I think his injury was just a freak injury, but definitely with Craft and JD....I would have erred on the cautious side

I would SAVE JD and Craft and Gentry till middle of season, for the stretch run.....I actually could NOT believe some of our MVA's (Most Valuable Assets) were out there going full speed in that monsoon....it really made 0 sense...If they are NOT 100% healthy, save them until they're absolute READY for the long haul....That way, others step up in their absence and are developed for Conference Championship and bowl .....
That will be difficult to do considering we have Navy for the second game of the year. So the first game becomes a game where they will need PT before the big time TV game with Navy.

Good thing you're not a coach. That is almost the dumbest strategy I have ever heard. Hold back your best players from playing so that they can't gel, don't get game experience and are cold for when we play the loaded part of the schedule so that we might possibly prevent injury. NONE... I repeat NONE of those injuries happened because they weren't 100%.
Maybe they shouldn't tackle in practice, Brady Davis got hurt two seasons ago in practice and Craft was hurt last year... both out for the year. Wait, with your logic, we shouldn't even practice with the starters because they might get hurt. They'll be ready to play in those big games because they watched films and did walk throughs in Shorts and helmets though, right?!!
