When Congress passed Real ID, I was working for the state and my primary client was the office of driver services so I would go to national meetings for the state agencies and we had some heated sessions with the Feds.

The Fed guys were poo-pooing the burden on the states and casually tossed out the estimated costs of the states. I wrote the number down and divided it by the US population.

It would have been cheaper to give every American a passport card good for entry into Canada.

In Arkansas we finally got legislation to adopt a compliant drivers license passed again (it had passed and two years later the legislature passed a new law blocking adoption)

My wife and I each recently renewed and had to get conventional drivers licenses. I forgot to take my social security card when I went and even though they have my number on file, and had a 1099 with my social security number on it they wouldn't issue the enhanced license. When my wife went they refused to accept a 1099 with our address and a letter from the agency with our address as proof that her address is correct. It is now harder to get a compliant drivers license than it is to get a damn passport the supposed gold standard.

We need separate identification from drivers license agencies. Too much of the public doesn't grasp that you can go to them to get an ID card.
Photo identification should be easily obtained for any citizen at no cost and drivers license agencies should go back to worrying about whether you are appropriately skilled to drive and have accepted financial responsibility for driving. Way too much mission creep suspending licenses for child support and non-driving related criminal offenses.

it's insane how dysfunctional gov't agencies are and how they 'talk' to each other.....
