They are still 7 in Sagarin and 15 in kenpom. They are still really good. The Big 12 is just a really deep league where you play poorly for a few games you can lose quickly. I have no issue with WVU being ranked.

They have top 15 talent, that has played like a borderline top 25 team. Very up and down. Sometimes they can look really good.

Mark,

I agree with your views on rankings in a lot of aspects. So many people are knee jerk and don't want to take the entire picture into perspective. For some people it's just what you have done recently.

Who yhe hell should be ranked over UK and WVU right now? They both have some good wins and not really any bad losses. And good computer numbers. A lot of people only care about the flavor of the week.

It's reasonable to rank plenty of teams ahead of both. UK in particularly has had a lot of down moments this year. WVU has plenty of flaws, but overall they've been really good. They are the only team to beat Virginia, they swept Kansas State, beat Missouri, beat Texas, Beat Baylor, Beat Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They had a bad 6 game stretch against mostly very good basketball teams. All these big 12 teams are good...no need to overreact when a team loses a few games.

Let me rephrase that. I mean who that isn't currently ranked? Obviously there are teams ahead of them that are better. Both teams have definately been slipping, but their overall body of work is still probably top 25 right now. That doesn't mean they are top 25 teams. Both teams are very unpredictable how they will look from week to week.

The only common opponent for UC and West Virginia is UCF.

The Bearcats beat UCF 49-38.
The Mountaineers beat UCF 83-45.

I have no problem with West Virginia being ranked. In fact, if we played them on a neutral court, would we be favored to win by the oddsmakers? Maybe, maybe not. And we're ranked #6.

I’m not saying WVU isn’t good, but how many teams stay ranked after losing 5 of 7?

It all depends on where you start in the rankings...who you lose to and who you beat. The Iowa State loss was a dreadful loss (not because Iowa State is bad, they are about UCF level), but because they got smoked. All the other losses were to top 30 kenpom teams and they sprinkled in wins against two other good teams. I'm impressed that the pollsters didn't overreact to recency bias which tends to be a huge thing pollsters do.

It helps that you destroy Kansas State two days before the rankings come out.

Assuming most sportswriters waited until some point Sunday to submit their ballots, that WVU beat-down was the last, lingering taste on their palate.

Honestly UCF is such a bad team to compare results with anyway this year, their best guard and probably best player was out 16 games this season including WV, he played but was rusty against UC, but he gives UCF another ball handler. But UCF had only one game all year that both Tacko Fall and BJ Taylor played; and that was against UC.

We played at UCF... WV played neutral

Common opponents are a bad way to compare teams anyways. Teams matchup different with different teams... any team can have a good or bad night depending on a variety of circumstances. Small sample sizes make for bad comparisons.

Oh, and I'm glad I was wrong on the other thread and that we're ranked #6 ahead of Duke.

Just keep winning!

It's not that unusual in strong conferences, where the wins and losses are mostly to other ranked teams. That kind of thing used to happen all the time in the old BE.

LOL...West Virginia loses yet again this week to yet another unranked team but drubs an unranked team at home in K-State over the weekend and they are still in the top 20. They have lost 5 of 7 and have looked absolutely dreadful the past 2+ weeks and seemingly can do no wrong to lose their Top 20 ranking.

FWIW for anyone who hated UC's dreadful OOC schedule....as of today it is rated #139 while WVU's is rated #197.

Using your standard of metrics, if we lose to UCF this week, then we should basically be out of the top 25? Since all that seems to matter is how you have looked the past week or 2? Why even play games in November/December. Good thing the pollsters aren't all as A.D.D. as some of the fans.
