RE: Baseball 2018
Well at least we didn't lose 40 games. That conference record (3-21) was brutal. We took the series with Towson 2 games to 1 and beat UNCW once. We were swept by every other conference opponent. Time to move on. We need some changes or some players to step up.

Thank you to the seniors who played their last game. I'm sure some of them will go on to be doctors, lawyers, business leaders, teachers, coaches, civil servants, etc. That happens every year regardless of wins or losses, and honestly that's what matters.

As bad as the Tribe feels, emotions must be pretty depressed in Harrisonburg too. JMU is hosting the CAA tournament this year and they are not even in it.

RE: Baseball 2018
Worst season possibly ever for W&M. In addition to finishing 15-39 they lost their final 16 in a row and 19 of their last 20. Outscored 31-9 by Elon in the three game series this weekend.

Final stats are almost unreal:

Team batting average .220 to opponents .273
Only one Tribe batter hit over .250 (and that was just barely-252)
Outscored by more than a hundred runs; 305 for opponents, just 203 for W&M
Team pitching era 5.00...opponent pitching 3.21
Incredible steal figures: just 18 for Tribe while opponents ran wild with 88
Walks: Tribe 166, Opponents 222
Not one complete game pitched by Tribe hurlers

These startling figures show how miserably bad the season was and illustrate the need for a complete overhaul.

RE: Baseball 2018
I compared the individual batter stats by season halves (February and March versus April and May) to see if there was any growth as the season progressed.

SS Zach Pearson
Feb/March
28 for 97 (.289), 4 2B, 1 HR, 3/16 BB/K, 3 for 5 SB
April/May
24 for 109 (.220), 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2/16 BB/K, 0 for 1 SB

C Hunter Smith
Feb/March
26 for 109 (.239), 3 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 5/28 BB/K, 0 for 2 SB
April/May
28 for 104 (.269), 6 2B, 5 HR, 7/26 BB/K

1B Colin Lipke
Feb/March
12 for 71 (.169), 5 2B, 1 HR, 4/20 BB/K
April/May
29 for 96 (.302), 7 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 16/21 BB/K, 2/3 SB

OF Owen Socher
Feb/March
19 for 84 (.226), 2 2B, 10/21 BB/K
April/May
11 for 44 (.250), 3 2B, 9/11 BB/K, 1 for 2 SB

2B Matt McDermott
Feb/March
23 for 93 (.247), 2 2B, 1 3B, 6/22 BB/K, 2/2 SB
April/May
22 for 105 (.210), 2 2B, 2 3B, 3/16 BB/K, 4/5 SB

3B Patrick Ryan
Feb/March
20 for 94 (.213), 2 2B, 8/13 BB/K, 1 for 2 SB
April/May
14 for 60 (.233), 2 2B, 7/14 BB/K, 0 for 1 SB

OF Brandon Raquet
Feb/March
4 for 35 (.114), 4/20 BB/K
April/May
21 for 85 (.247), 7 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 8/43 BB/K, 2 for 3 SB

It took time but Lipke adjusted to DI pitching and put up a nice line in the second half; double that line and he could hit .300 with 14 doubles and 10 homers next year. Smith also looks primed to hit double digit doubles and homers next year. You could look at Raquet's second half and project him over 200 ABs to hit .250 with 16-17 doubles and 9-10 HRs but that otherworldly BABIP of .552 is not sustainable.

Most of those K/BB numbers are really bad.

RE: Baseball 2018
And now the pitchers:

Bodie Sheehan
Feb/March
48 IP, 17 ER, 46 H, 6 BB, 33 K, 2 HR, 1 HBP
April/May
38 IP, 26 ER, 55 H, 9 BB, 29 K, 3 HR, 0 HBP

Wade Strain
Feb/March
21.2 IP, 4 ER, 16 H, 12 BB, 23 K, 0 HR, 2 HBP
April/May
32.2 IP, 25 ER, 41 H, 12 BB, 25 K, 4 HR, 4 HBP

Nick Butts
Feb/March
18.1 IP, 12 ER, 20 H, 6 BB, 20 K, 2 HR, 2HBP
April/May
21.2 IP, 5 ER, 13 H, 9 BB, 12 K, 1 HR, 3 HBP

Chris Farrell
Feb/March
24 IP, 8 ER, 22 H, 16 BB, 22 K, 0 HR, 6 HBP
April/May
28.2 IP, 18 ER, 34 H, 14 BB, 15 K, 3 HR, 6 HBP

Jacob Haney
Feb/March
29.2 IP, 14 ER, 25 H, 14 BB, 22 K, 0 HR, 6 HBP
April/May
18.1 IP, 10 ER, 14 H, 6 BB, 16 K, 3 HR, 4 HBP

Justin Pearson
Feb/March
8.2 IP, 4 ER, 11 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 0 HR, 0 HBP
April/May
12.2 IP, 9 ER, 12 H, 9 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP

Michael Goldak
Feb/March
7 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, 0 HBP
April/May
15.1 IP, 12 ER, 18 H, 11 BB, 13 K, 1 HR, 4 HBP

Jamie Sara
Feb/March
22.1 IP, 15 ER, 20 H, 14 BB, 20 K, 1 HR, 2 HBP
April/May
11.2 IP, 9 ER, 14 H, 6 BB, 18 K, 1 HR, 4 HBP

Growth is a little more mixed with the pitchers. Butts had a better ERA in the second half but his BB/K rate dipped. Haney improved his BB/K ratio but he was bit by the long ball. Sara improved his K rate but hit twice as many as batters as in the first half.

FYI-

Both UNCW and NU made the NCAA tourney.

Good for the CAA.

Best of luck to both schools!

Summer ball assignments:

http://www.tribeathletics.com/news/2018/...teams.aspx

Sheehan and Sara (second year in a row) will be in the Cape Cod League which is the premier league in the country. Northwoods (Raquet) and Coastal Plains (Farrell and McDermott) typically are top leagues as well

UNCW beat Ohio State, eliminating the Buckeye.

Northeatern goes 0-2, and are done. But, they had a tough draw, since they had to play the 1 and 2 seeds due to an upset of NC State

I know this is not Tribe-related, but the video recap of yesterday's Fla. St. (#1 regional seed) - Miss. St. (#2 regional seed) Elimination game is why some of us love the sport of baseball-

Enjoy!

Kudos to UNCW who scored 9 runs in the 5th to come from behind and knock out ECU, 9-7. I believe they're the only #4 seed still alive in all of the regionals.

Good for them. I know there's no love lost for the Pirates down in Wilmington.

Not mentioned is that Kyle Wrighte is playing for the Waynesboro Generals in the Valley League. He had 4 stolen bases last night. He did not play this year even though he was listed on the roster so I assume he was injured? This would have been his redshirt junior season so academically he is probably finished.

I hooked up with Coach Brian yesterday. We talked about all sorts of things. He’s excited to be working with a dozen or so new guys for next year. The schedule is shaping up. The home schedule is exciting. There are some plans afoot to improve the interior look of the Plumeri. We are so lucky to have Coach Brian running the show.

David Hogarth (.327 avg) and Aljo Sujak (3.06 era) doing well in the Hamptons Collegiate League. Both played in the league’s All-Star game: Hogarth had three hits and Sujak pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Looks like McDermott is actually playing for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
