Our 2016 season generated an estimated $84 million in media exposure alone.

Not sure how Hockey (let alone any other varsity sport) ever remotely touches that even with winning a national championship.

The money is well spent.

Good to finally pick up a win. Pretty amazing considering all the third period penalties.

Salvaged a split but we will still probably drop in the rankings as Miami wasn’t even receiving votes

So how much of this so called estimated media exposure money actually worked its way back into western michigans pockets, and how much estimated media exposure money did we generate this year and how much of that did western michigan get. I'm not arguing that football does not generate more revenue than the rest of the sports it probably does but don't come on here quoting numbers like estimated media exposure and think it is actual dollars in western,s profit .

We have an excellent Hockey program...no doubt. I've been a supporter and season ticket holder for many years. However, on a regional level, and even more so on a national level, football and basketball exposure blow away hockey. No argument. That being said...I love our hockey team and program.

Interesting. Ranked 13th in the pairwise but I'm guessing we'll drop in the USCHO poll.

To stay in the top 16 in pairwise, we must find a way to split or sweep the next two series vs Saint Cloud and Duluth and then sweep CC on the road.

Then win a first round NCHC series and at least win a game in the frozen face off in Minneapolis. If that happens, I think we would be in decent shape to get an at large bid

Based on how the pairwise really favors NCHC teams, I'm thinking that a split with St. Cloud and Duluth......along with a split at CC would get us in. More than that could get us to a #3 seed. Those 2 big wins over Denver are still yielding dividends:).

Prior to using pairwise as a tool to determine the NCAA field, the politicking by the four man committee in the smoke filled room to do it would often result in a team getting left out that had a poor second half.......even if it was the result of injuries like ours. Thankfully, pairwise calculations more accurately measure the entire season's performance. Hoping Conrad will return for St. Cloud. Any word on Muir?

Those numbers came directly from a reputable study conducted by WMU (MLive did an article on it, feel free to google it). Actual dollars into WMU’s pocket is literally impossible to calculate as is with any study like this.

RE: WMU @ Miami
The idea is that WMU would have had to spend over $80M to get that much media coverage normally. Of course it didn't bring in that much... but winning a hockey national championship (though it would be really fun) gives you some blurbs in the papers and highlights on ESPN for a day. Without looking I bet the TV ratings for a Tuesday MACtion game are similar to the hockey national title game. Point stands IMO. I love the hockey team but logically the decision is easy.

It doesn't matter one bit where a team is ranked in the USCHO poll. It's meaningless. Staying in the top 16 in the pairwise is what's important. Probably more important for a team like WMU to try and stay in the top 12 as some tournament spots go to conference auto-bids and can push 13-16 out of at-large spots.

So the pairwise rankings are what's used for NCAA tournament bidding selections? I thought the USCHO were the official NCAA rankings? I'm not all that familiar with college hockey

The polls mean nothing they are peoples opinions and most will have never even watched your games . The pairwise rankings are the statistical analisis of of how your teams have done inter conference wise road victory count more than home victory's , strength of schdule which can be found out in karch rankings. it takes care of teams racking up victories by playing poor teams etc ... Its the math that takes care of people's bias opinion and is what is used to set the tournament. Poll's are for fun pairwise is for real. you can go to college hockey news under rankings will have an good explanation
