Because some teams that are outside of the top 16 will win their conference Championship, and get an automatic bid, you really need to be in at least the top 14 in the pairwise. Those unranked conference Champs will eliminate one two or even three teams from the bottom of the pairwise ranking

Interesting. Ranked 13th in the pairwise but I'm guessing we'll drop in the USCHO poll.

It doesn't matter one bit where a team is ranked in the USCHO poll. It's meaningless. Staying in the top 16 in the pairwise is what's important. Probably more important for a team like WMU to try and stay in the top 12 as some tournament spots go to conference auto-bids and can push 13-16 out of at-large spots.

So the pairwise rankings are what's used for NCAA tournament bidding selections? I thought the USCHO were the official NCAA rankings? I'm not all that familiar with college hockey

A high ranking in the USCHO Poll and $5 will get you a cup of bad coffee sometimes.

Rankings are good for the profile of the program. We all love them when we are ranked high. They also do a bit, I think, to provide the team some recognition for playing well. The rankings and the Pairwise typically are not very different. I would love if every sport had a pairwise system for awarding post season spots. The P5 programs dont want things to be fair or equitable though, so we will never see that happen.

Haha. A fair, equal college football ranking system? Out of here with that blasphemy.
