Liberty's game is on Saturday, March 10 at 5 PM. LU is ranked #10 and is playing #7 Central Oklahoma. Games will be played in Columbus. I don't know yet if LFSN will cover the event.

Looks like 20. Some teams don't play in the first round. Each conference winner gets in (there are 6 if I remember correctly). That is why some lower ranked teams are in the tournament.

What would you say our odds of winning it are at?

I think the odds of winning it all are slim but LU hockey has some pieces to make some noise in the tournament. The team has been improving over the season and is on a 19 game winning streak (30-6 overall). A lot of momentum going into the tournament. LU’s goalie, according to LFSN, is ranked top 10 in most good statistical categories. This team has generated 206 GF to only 76 GA. Only one other team in the league has more goals. The offense is very good and there is a quality goalie backing up the team.

Just have to execute against a quality second round opponent (#7 Central Oklahoma). They are 28-5 with 162 GF and 75 GA.

LU scores their first goal of the night with 1 minute left to play to force OT. Just fantastic hockey.

Agreed. Move up the men's and women's teams. Try to get a conference but be independent if we have to.

I think LU should go for the Hockey East Conference.
1) The Hockey East is a competitive and multi-bid conference.
2) They offer both mens and womens hockey.
3) They have room to grow both M/W hockey.
4) Notre Dame was in the conference so they are willing to add out of range schools.
4.5) Lynchburg is closer to the footprint compared to South Bend.
5) Gives the LU brand a presents in the north east.
6) LU can bring a huge school with a national brand to the Hockey East.

One drawback is the fact that LU would have a smaller (but not smallest) stadium in the Hockey East. An upgrade of 500-1000 seats would be helpful.

The Hockey East would be an interesting addition for the men’s and women’s team. I spoke to Jonathan Chung (video coach) and he mentioned the idea of LU moving up in the future and expanding the LIC as well. I see that the opener for the 2018-19 season is against Penn State. Is that the NCAA D1 team? I don’t see any information about an ACHA D1 team.

Penn State is a Division I team. They moved up several years ago.

ECAC currently has 12 mens and womens schools. A 13th member might not be desirable unless they expand to 14. Hockey East has 11 mens and 9 womens programs so there is room to grow.

Consider this as well; Ian McCaw does have some connection in the northeast since he was the Athletic Director at UMASS. I don’t think the opener against Penn State is a coincidence. If anything , we might look into the Atlantic Hockey Association. I don’t think the AHA obtains any women’s teams though. The key factor that will help Liberty to transition is the women hockey team.

Great observation. It is interesting to note that UMASS just so happens to be in the Hockey East.

There are six mens hockey conferences (Atlantic Hockey, Big Ten, ECAC, Hockey East, NCHC, WCHA). Three of these conferences also have womens hockey (ECAC, Hockey East, WCHA).

The ECAC is probably full at 12 M/W programs. WCHA is weaker league with a very scattered geo-footprint. That leaves the Hockey East. It is a logical conference to seek out if LU wants both M/W hockey to move up at the same time. There is an added benefit of the Hockey East being a stronger conference.

RE: Official Liberty Flames Hockey Thread
You are correct and I think the game opener against Penn State is just nudge to get the attention from the presidents and commissioners of those D1 conferences. The NHL and college Hawkey officials have been doing some school studies to extend schools into NCAA D1. They already have selected 2 out of the 5 schools that may consider transitioning ( University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Oakland University (MI). Hopefully Liberty could receive an invitation especially since the NHL and college hockey would like to expand the game of hockey in the south (just like the University of Alabama in Huntington). The good thing about Liberty is the NHL franchises that surround Lynchburg (Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and especially the Washington Capitals [who are in the Stanley Cup finals and will increase interest in Virginia]). If I was Liberty, I would try to get a spot in the feasible study because we do have the finance to fund the program and do not need to ask for money like the Fighting Illinis.
