Not questioning your statement, but when did LU have this discussion? Also is there information that can can be seen or read? You mention an 8-10 year period before we transition to D1, but knowing LU, they may transition earlier if possible lol.

I would like to eventually reach Division I and don't mind waiting a bit. I think we need a conference invitation or else it would be rough. I would also like to see our attendance increase.

RE: Official Liberty Flames Hockey Thread
Oakland has passed its NHL feasibility study with flying colors.

Now their negotiating with the Detroit Piston to buy their large arena, the Palace of Auburn Hills. Oakland doesn’t have an arena on campus but the Palace is huge and would create other opportunities.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...773767002/

Oakland would need a conference though.

Maybe Lindenwood would start up a team too, as they now have the use of the St Louis Blues new practice facility which seat around 3000. The women’s team is already DI.

Pitt has been rumored to studying a team too. They just added women’s lacrosse so another men’s team might be possible.

As mentioned, Bowling Green doesn’t like the mainly DII league it’s in. Maybe they can convince Oakland, Miami, W Michigan, Canisius, Niagara, Mercyhurst, and Robert Morris to start a new league. Either get Liberty to join it or get in Atlantic Hockey, which would need more schools.

Miami and W Mich don’t probably like the news that Ariz St is building a 4000 seat arena, that UNLV has a number of existing arenas near it and wants team, Fresno St is the later school with rumored feasibility studies, and several PAC12 schools have upgraded their clubs teams and have nearby arena (Utah, Arizona, UCLA, Colorado) . Denver and Colorado College would probably insist on more western teams. UND just had a game in Las Vegas against Minnesota in front of a packed house at the Orleans Arena there. The central time zone schools wouldn’t be opposed imho.

Another school that might start hockey is Long Island U. It can use the Islanders old Uniondale Arena or the Islanders new practice facility, which has a rink with ~ 3000:seats. Long Island does not have a college men’s team currently, but LIU is slated to start a women’s one next year.

RE: Official Liberty Flames Hockey Thread
Every year or so this topic sort of comes around, so I figure now is as good of a time to touch on it as any. I like to think I know a little bit about this, and I’m pretty darn close to the program. So, take this how you like...

1) We opened at home against Penn State’s ACHA team, not its NCAA program. With that said, Liberty beat Penn State during their transition season, with a team full of scholarship NCAA players. So I don’t think we would be totally demolished, but let’s not pretend we are at that level, because we aren’t.

2) A great talent comparison in the rapidly growing and improving ACHA D1 is NCAA D3. The top 15 ACHA teams would do VERY well in NCAA D3, and some would likely be national champions on a given year. More and more, talented players are choosing to go to bigger universities with more academic choices, higher name recognition, better weather, and just more to offer. That means a ton, and I mean a ton, of guys are choosing ACHA over the small private schools in the northeast that offer NCAA hockey at the D3 level. The facilities, amenities, travel, coaching, media coverage, and competition have all improved so much in the past decade, it is honestly a more exciting experience for the most part. While a handful NCAA D2 schools have hockey, there hasn’t been a D2 national championship in a long time, with no plans to reinstate it. Most D2’s are in the process of transitioning either up or down.

3) There was a time a few years back when a move for Liberty was looked at. Eventually the view became that at LU, we could do more by making it one of the premier ACHA programs in the country, with one of the top 3 facilities, than by moving to a much more heavily regulated and expensive NCAA brand. And frankly, they were correct IMO. ACHA is growing so quickly, and the quality is improving so rapidly.

4) We would definitely need to move both the men and women for Title IX reasons. So you are more than doubling the expense there, for what is already the second most expensive NCAA sport. Our travel expenses would be VERY high. We could afford it, but getting schools to come to us would be more difficult (not saying it can’t be done).

5) Conference affiliation would be an issue. Mostly because of travel. We would be a geographic outlier, by a lot, no matter where we tried to go. Hockey East is an absolute pipe dream. That would be like a new D1 school going to the SEC. Not going to happen. Definitely not going to happen for a private school in Virginia. Alabama Huntsville has NCAA hockey, and so does Arizona State. There are other geographic oddballs, but we would be one of the 5 worst in the nation.

Honestly, it’s just not feasible in the current climate of NCAA hockey. Things could change a lot, especially if the SEC and PAC get involved, which is at least mentioned as a long term possibility on occasion. However, the change and momentum really seems to be that ACHA hockey is going to keep pulling stronger players to bigger schools, especially in the warmer climate south and west. Heck, ACHA programs are already sending guys into professional hockey left and right (including Ours). It is unlikely to be an NHL pipeline in the near future, but with a very feasible and moderate increase in support from schools on facilities and budget, the product will be just as attractive as NCAA D1 is on campuses throughout the Northeast and upper Midwest.

It’s going to be a great season guys. Big time games at home, and the team is going to be awesome. Also, it is worth noting that Coach Handy is committed to putting young men on the ice that we ALL can be truly proud of, on and off the ice. The spiritual growth of the team is his main priority, and it is fantastic to see. These are true student athletes, and the type of young men doc envisioned putting on a Liberty University uniform. Please support them.

Flames move back into top five in ACHA Division I rankings. http://www.liberty.edu/campusrec/clubspo...18&TeamID=

LU hockey is now 17-3-1. Two loses are to the #3 team Adrian on the road. One lose is to the #4 team Ohio. LU split with Ohio.

LU hockey is ranked #5 and on a seven game winning streak.

Liberty hockey is in the 2019 ACHA tournament as the #8 team. They face #9 Arizona. This game is on Saturday (3-23-19) at 8:30 PM.

This is coming off a truly heartbreaking loss in the ESCHL championship against Syracuse in 2OT.

I'm not optimistic about this game given a quality opponent and coming off a heartbreak loss.

Liberty falls to #1 Lindenwood 4-3. LU had a legitimate top 10 team this year.

Still hoping that Men’s and Women’s hockey become NCAA D1 one day. I’ll even add Men’s Lacrosse in the mix while adding Women’s tennis, golf and something else like water polo.

ASOR Mailbag (April 15, 2019) talks about the hockey program in one of the questions. A few very informative paragraphs.

http://www.aseaofred.com/mailbag-taking-...l-15-2019/

As far as moving up, they are not quite ready to make the substantial investment needed for the next level. It does sound like the program is getting closer to that point. I don't think this question (when to move up) is going away anytime soon.

I don’t think so, especially looking into what occurred in the Frozen Four. The game of college hockey is expanding and we saw that not all the teams in teams playing postseason were blue blood organizations like UM,Notre Dame, Boston, UW,etc. I believe Liberty would be a good fit someday especially that we are around three professional organizations (Capitals, Predators and Hurricanes). The expenses would be second under football, but I think having a big program would bring more interest to the Burg from a 50 mile radius. I think it should be considered in the next five years especially when the student population starts to increase again. No rush! Lol
