This was the first game I attended this year. What I saw:
1. Their defense consisted in going over the back, pushing, reaching in, and fouling but without the foul being called. It is hard to get any offensive rhythm going when the refs are letting them play like that.
2. As many posters have said, I saw tons of Drexel traveling violations not called.
3. I also saw at least 5 plays where the Drexel player was slipping, sliding, or falling and still threw up a prayer --- and every single one of them went in. Nothing we could do about that except marvel at their good fortune and eventually realize that it wasn't going to be our day.
4. I think Knight was too tentative and looking to pass more than looking to shoot. One play he was within 5 feet of the basket for an easy hook but he opted to pass out to a three-point shooter instead. Drexel anticipated it and stole the pass.
5. Two killer plays I remember were when Drexel drained a three from the corner on an inbounds play and the shooter was completely uncovered until Cohn made a desperate but too late lunge at the shooter, and when Knight stole the ball near midcourt when the game was hanging in the balance and then he immediately threw it over everyone's heads for a costly turnover.
6. One play there was a bad pass to Harrison and the ball crossed midcourt. He started to chase it but then stopped to glare at the passer (!). He then noticed that the ball was still in play and a Drexel player was zooming in on it, so he gave chase again. Very fortunately for the Tribe, Drexel did not score on that possession.
7. Gotta give Drexel credit for making their free throws down the stretch. They shot 10 FTs in the last 0:52 and made 9 of them (they were 12-14 inside the 8:32 mark).
8. I didn't see Lefty Driesell at halftime, as advertised. I think the major ceremony honoring Bill Chambers occurred after the game and the halftime show was just an appetizer.
Despite the fact that I predicted a W in this game, I am not shocked that we lost. Drexel just seems to have our number. I was on hand two years ago when Drexel beat us on Senior Day.
I disagree with some posters who wanted Hofstra to beat Charleston. I think a 4-way tie is dangerous. We have a better chance with CofC ahead of us and Hofstra behind us. Reason being that we still have two games with CofC and thus we control our own destiny with them.
