When I was there (89-93) the Tribe was mostly mediocre at best to bad at worst. At the same time the place was PACKED when we played Duke, Virginia (Kurt Small OT game), Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, etc. People gave a damn when we played name brands or local rivals (Richmond/ODU/JMU/VCU/Mason). Nobody gives a **** about playing Elon on a Thursday night. One more reason to join the A-10 if they would ever take us. Also think today’s W&M students are vastly different from 25 years ago. Have to make it about more than basketball to make it be a “must do” for today’s Tribe

I agree with the concept that students are different than 25 years ago. Here is what my freshman has seen this year:

The students were encouraged to support ALL extracurricular activities they could of their classmates, not just athletics. A record crowd came out for a field hockey battle, and for the NCAA soccer match(in the case of soccer it was not within walking distance). They also went to dance recitals, plays, improv theatre, and community and dorm events. They turned up in huge numbers for the Yule Log(but nowhere near 100%) 100% or anywhere close to it doesn't exist. For football, many came to several games and the product(this season only) was awful. Many left during the games and some only came to a few and then failed to come to any more. For basketball, my daughter has followed the team as have some of her classmates(she has watched some games online as we have). But, none of the Nov./Dec. games were good for student attendance(i.e they were not in school for most of them). The first home game they could attend while in school and not right around finals, we have a big crowd and got crushed by Northeastern. My guess is that more of them will show up Saturday. But, we on the board do not have the typical view of many of the fans. Why are not 5000-6000 people in Williamsburg coming to the games? During my time in 87-91, we never had more than about 500-600 students for any basketball game unless it was Duke, UVA, or maybe Lefty bringing JMU in. Mostly that was because the team got drilled and was noncompetitive. I went to nearly every game, but frequently could show up 3 minutes before tip off and sit on the first 2 rows of the student section. For football, there was a lot more, but the team was good. We had Robert Green and Tyrone Shelton, a series of excellent QB's and a team that nearly always scored 24+ and was super exciting. We also sometimes gave up 30+ points. But, except for my freshman year, the team won and won a lot.
So, let's leave the students alone. It is really not majorly different than it was. Make it an event(like the Gold Rush) and put out a winning product and they will come. Stink up the joint or be boring, and they won't. They have lots of other choices(beyond studying). But, they will almost come out to support their classmates if others are going and will come back if it is fun. That is really not different than when I attended. Maybe it was different 40 years ago. Even at UVA(who is #2 right now), there are large numbers of students who care nothing about the basketball team. They just have a stadium that seats less that the total undergraduate enrollment. Their ticket is near capacity for the student allotment. It is nothing close to that for football. JMU is a good example as well. Football has a huge draw of students and a huge band. Basketball, they stink and are lucky when they get even a medium sized crowd. One big difference in the last 20+ years is the ability to see every game on TV or the internet. While it is great for people 4 hours away like me, it doesn't help attendance at the venue.

What a ridiculous hijack on a thread on an entertaining game, a nice win and one well attended by students and others.

I think our students are showing up in far greater numbers than any other school in the CAA this year.

And all this crap about the A10, is well, crap. Our students aren't drawn by Elon though we are supposed to believe they will show up for UMass. No they won't.

It's not the opponent, it's the talent we have on the floor. We have a fun team to watch and the students show up for that. I went to the Northeastern game, an impressive showing (the student attendance).

I also went to games in the 70s as a student. Yes we did pack when we played UNC, UVA, Tech and Duke. Guess what, we would again today if we had the games. On the other hand, league games against Davidson, Furman, American, GW and The Citadel had no greater buzz or butts in seats than current games with Hofstra, Delaware or UNCW.

The best games in my time there were always Va Tech.

I tried to get the topic over into the AD tasks thread, but people just love to post here...

All it takes is a new President. The current one is not pro sports and I'm happy he's leaving. I don't want the wrath of folks on this board for this post, but I'm steadfast behind it. Combine a new President with Huge and we're going places.

How many basketball games does Reveley attend?

I've seen him at a fair amount?

We got the Zable Renovations, have announced COA for basketball, baseball stadium renovations, expanded Daly field, etc under Reveley. Not sure why you think he isn't pro sports.

We've moved on from blaming the students to blaming Taylor Reveley! Amazing. Yes, let's all bring Gene Nichol back, that will fix everything...

Not even sure why there are any complaints when the team is 8-3. Just tired of all the complaining/ blaming the students, the staff, the President, the parking, lack of food or beer choices. Leaving the board for a while to get my joy back like Rowley has. Too much angst when the season has been a pleasant surprise. Hope Milon doesn't read any of this negativity. Will be pulling for our team tomorrow. Let's try to believe.

Not really sure how you think what we said about Milon is negative. Everyone knows he isn't good defensively and it seems like he has lost his confidence with his shot. Until he regains that confidence, I prefer him losing some minutes to better defenders in Tot and Loewe.

I still think Milon has a very smooth stroke and can be deadly when he gets hot.

I wouldn't leave the boards. You can A) block posters with whom you don't want to read or 2) gloss over their posts

I prefer to not allow people to dictate what I do because doing so makes me feel like they won and I'm a sore loser. Plus, I like knowing that the positive posters way outnumber malcontents.

There are posters on here, three in particular, who drove posters away. That's a documented fact and a real shame. I don't have to--or even want to--agree with what people say all of the time but it is an issue if Tribe fans flee because a few people are obsessed with towing the negative line. That's why I started the Off Topics (Siberia) sub-forum...I figured the main page would be reserved for Tribe topics while the other stuff would be segregated. There's nothing wrong with talking politics but it caused friction and we don't need that. The sub-forum helped with the political diatribes but won't snub negativity.

So, block who you don't like. Just click on their name and hit block. Easy day.

RE: Elon Rematch and this week's Disa & Data
This is a surprising great and very exciting season...students have packed their sections and expanding into the upper sections since returning from holiday break, the alums and townspeople are into it.

Taylor Reveley is--and will be remembered as--one of the College's greatest presidents and has been a strong supporter of the athletic program.

We're leading the league in men's basketball attendance and crowds are growing. And, as someone noted,
if we played UVA, Duke, Va Tech, Georgetown and UNC at Kaplan the place would be packed.

And the silly carping on Matt Milon...he's a terrific sophomore to have in our program and has many great games ahead of him. Every player goes through these stretches.

Hey, just enjoy the moment.

This year's edition of the Tribe men's basketball team is an overachieving group that is fun to watch. Thursday night vs. Elon was a prime example. If I weren't so far away, I'd be at all the games. We should enjoy them and revel in their accomplishments as they represent our alma mater.

I sincerely apologize for hijacking this thread. I meant no disrespect to anyone, and I am sorry I posted something so off topic. The discussion belongs in its own thread, and I honestly was just waxing nostalgic in a totally inappropriate thread.

Anyway, it was a great win, and I am glad I was able to watch it on stretch!

Go get 'em today, guys!
