But then you go back to having deserving teams in smaller conferences being at the mercy of all knowing and unbiased ncaa selection committee. My thought was to make sure all genuinely deserving teams got an invite.

Agreed on that portion, but I like the idea of giving the top eight seeds a bye. It allows 16 additional teams to make the field from the traditional 64 number (or 12 more in current terms) which would ensure that virtually the top 50 teams are likely to be in the tournament. Anything beyond that and then you're going to start seeing 16-15 teams getting at large bids, because of the conference they are from.

It's very difficult for non-power conference teams to penetrate the top 20 to 25 metrics, but we are often in that 35 to 50 range with some of our better programs that absolutely deserve to be in the tournament.

That is because they keep changing the evaluation criteria. Our better programs used to have no problem getting bids. That changed about 5 years ago when they essentially ditched the RPI and that is what needs to change back. I don't think watering it down even more will do much unless they made a .500 conference record a requirement, else they will be inviting bad P5 teams, and I don't think earning an 8 seed as opposed to a 9 is special enough to earn a bye. You could make a better argument for top 4 seed byes, but more often than not an 8 seed is going to be someone like Kansas State that finishes something like 18-12 (10-8). I don't think that warrants a bye.
128 teams in would water it down but only for one game. After that your back to 64 teams and all deserving teams are in and have been given a chance to advance. Not to mention the extra revenue from 64 games that go to the team and their conference. The smaller conferences need all the money they can get With the tv contracts becoming what they are. I know this idea may not be perfect but you have to start somewhere. The way it is now totally sucks if your not in a p5 conference.

I think you need to rephrase that comment, makes no sense without the missing pronoun.

RE: Selection Committee Metrics
Jerry Palm with this little write up on WKU today:

Western Ky.

The Hilltoppers are competing with Middle Tennessee State at the top of Conference USA, but if either of those teams needs at at-large berth, WKU is best positioned for that. That is due in no small part to a win over potential No. 1 seed Purdue in the Battle 4 Atlantis in November. Few bubble teams have a win that good on their tournament resume. They also beat a healthy SMU in that tournament. It is important now for them to avoid picking up any more bad losses, but if they can do that, the Hilltoppers can make a good case for themselves as an at-large team in the NCAA Tournament.

RE: Selection Committee Metrics
I ran RPI out just to see what would happen if we win out regular season, win one game against let's say FAU and then lose in the semis to Old Dominion, for example (throwin the Monarchs a bone) and our RPI would be projected to be 17. Would we be left out with an RPI that high?

RE: Selection Committee Metrics
Even if we lost at La Tech our RPI would be 21 with that scenario.

If we lose to both Tech and wkcc under the same conference tourney scenario it's a 29.

RE: Selection Committee Metrics
What if MTSU wins out and falls in conference tournament

WKU loses at MTSU and in conference tournament.

Someone else wins conference tournament.

Could we sneak 3 teams in?

No, only way WKU gets a at large is to win out then lose in championship game, and then that’s still questionable. MT has only one top 50 win and that’s against WKU, its very possible they would also be out if both lose in CUSA tournament

Does middle really only have 1 top 50 win against us? That doesn't bode well for them. I thought they had a harder ooc then us? Or that's what they all said

RE: Selection Committee Metrics
Keep in mind top 50 is not a thing anymore unless it's a neutral site game.

It's top 75 away and top 30 home for "Tier 1"

We lost by six to #7 Auburn
Lost by by five to #38 USC
Lost by three to #20 Miami

However, we don't have a single non-conference game against anyone with an RPI of 200 or above and only one is 150 or above. By comparison where we don't have hardly any 150+ RPI teams even on the schedule, four of y'alls non-conf wins and two of your losses came against such teams. This is why we have the 4th rated non-conference SOS.

I think everyone can agree that both MT and WKU passes the eye test regardless of numbers

Yes I hope this does not turn into our first CUSA season where we got off to a 7-0 start only to finish .500 rest of the season in CUSA play....I think we are more than capable to avoid that, but we need to figure out some stuff moving forward...

Lunardi has demoted WKU to "next 4 out." Good to still be listed.

ESPN doesn't have a clue what C-USA is doing............. except that Western beat Purdue.

Out of sight, out of mind.
