RE: Seattle's NHL expansion bid getting closer to reality
The so-called “Atlanta problem” is a misconception. The Thrashers were actually doing pretty decent, but ATL Spirit wanted to max out revenue on the Hawks instead, and make the Hawks/Phillips Arena attractive to a new buyer. Atlanta was actually doing better than Phoenix and the Panthers, but ATL Spirit wanted the arena just for the Hawks. If Houston has an owner who likes hockey, then no problem.

This is the same issue that might prevent the NBA from going back to Seattle.

The Hawks owners controlled their arena and wanted to control all of the arena dates other than Hawks games for concerts and other events, so as to max their revenue.

Same issue in Seattle. The group that is rebuilding the arena is also going to control the NHL franchise. They will want as many available dates as possible to make money off of other arena events, rather than giving a long-term lease to an NBA team they don't own. Also, NBA and NHL teams that don't control their own arena are at a revenue disadvantage to others in their league who get a ton of extra revenue from other arena events.

So any prospective Seattle NBA owner might want to be in an arena they control, and good luck getting two arena projects built in Seattle in less than 10 years.

Update: Atlanta Spirit no longer exists, and sold the Hawks the same year they sold the Thrashers. One of key members of Atlanta Spirit had a long history with the team. Hmm, no wonder the Thrashers got a raw deal. Jokes on Atlanta Spirit now though considering they no longer exist.

It may be a misconception but it’s popular enough to gain traction. It’s a great market, I hope it gets a good chance again.

I did some research about Atlanta Spirit and the Hawks. Folks were so angry at Atlanta Spirit for selling the Thrashers, that they boycotted Hawks games. If that wasn't bad enough for Atlanta Spirit, the mayor of Atlanta hit them with a huge penalty should they or anyone else try to move the team for seven years, I believe, when Atlanta Spirit renewed the lease. No one in Atlanta was found to Atlanta Spirit's liking/asking price, so Atlanta Spirit sold the Hawks to a firm from California, who agreed not to move the team.

Yeah, it was painfully obvious from the beginning that this group was the epitome of smarmy opportunists looking to turn a quick buck. Protecting the franchises were never their main concern. The Thrashers and Flames before them both had rabid fan bases but money talks in this transition town. Every sports owner we’ve ever had has used that as leverage.

I find it funny that nhl.com has been kind of mum on articles involving any kind of expansion. Personally, I think most pro leagues should be in multiples of 4 and that generally equates out to 32 teams across the country for having balanced conferences and divisions. The NHL could be an exception with Canada being so heavily involved as a market.

Yeah... just saw it.... I didn't think they would turn down the money... and with the success the Golden Knights had last year they probably want to ride that train.

i think it'll help also with scheduling as now have 4 8 team divisions.....

32 games vs other conference
28 games vs own division(4 per team)
22 games vs other division in conference(3 vs 6 teams, 2 vs 2 teams)

Lol good options! I like the Seattle Lattes.

I actually think they'll go with an historic Seattle sports name like the Pilots or Metropolitans. But, this article, https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/seatt...ranchise/, seems to believe the name will come from this list of 15:

1. Steelheads - not the worst
2. Skyline - eh...
3. Metropolitans - good
4. Snowcaps - like mountains or the candy...?
5. Thunderbirds - arena football for 75 year olds
6. Nighthawks - arena football
7. Sasquatches - would be funny which is why it won't happen
8. Kraken - not terrible
9. Thunder - passive agressive
10. Pilots - YES!
11. Skyscrapers - eh...
12. Thunderwolves - arena football
13. Grinders - umm...
14. Neon Warriors - invokes an 80s aerobics feel
15. Grunge - imagine all the Nirvana hits blasting at home games

They could make their jerseys (or sweaters to be precise) out of flannel.

Require players to grow their hair out and never shower.

Mascots could be a mulatto, an albino, & a mosquito.

It'll make sense once they move to Houston. And they will, because if they don't, the Hurricanes will move to Houston. 03-banghead

The Coyotes' owners are the biggest winners in this.

Not only do they get 1/31st of the expansion fee, which puts over $20 million into their account, but $650 million is now the floor for the price when they sell the team to some guy with way too much money in Houston or wherever. Even after paying off the massive amount of debt the Coyotes are carrying, the profit from that sale will be more than $100 million. Cha-ching.

Did Seattle used to or currently have any kind of pro hockey? What was their name?

Honestly that Grunge name kind of works for me...

Would they bring back the Supersonics/Sonics and go with green, gold, and.... red?

Seattle Seahawks NFL
Seattle Sounders MLS
Seattle Mariners MLB

Might have to be something involving the sea!

I like Kraken.

Seals, Sea Lions, and Raineers sound good.

Kraken... dark green, black (for octo ink) and blue of whatever and go nasty octopus logo ... and some say goalies go octo when they are stopping tons of pucks.
