RE: Seattle's NHL expansion bid getting closer to reality
I like it - super expensive - but I like it. Now what I'd like to see is the Coyotes move to Houston and the Panthers move to Quebec. Then we'd have this set up:

Western Conference
Pacific: Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken*, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights
Central: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Houston Aeros**, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets

Eastern Conference
Atlantic: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals
Northeast: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs

*The Seattle Kraken name was introduced by a fan and I love it
**The Houston Aeros name is a name rooted in Houston hockey history

Houston is a great sports city but has too much competition for an NHL team, they'd be a risk for another Atlanta Thrashers situation imo. I think the Coyotes should've moved to Vegas with expansion teams going to Seattle and then either Kansas City or Austin.

Move Colorado and add Seattle to the Pacific. Move Calgary and Edmonton to the Central.

May be even better: divide into 4-team divisions.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
PACIFIC: Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, *Seattle
SOUTH: Vegas, Arizona, Colorado, Dallas
NORTH: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg
MIDWEST: Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, St. Louis

EASTERN CONFERENCE
ATLANTIC: Boston, Buffalo, New York Islanders, New York Rangers
NORTH: Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, *Quebec
EAST: Columbus, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
SOUTH: Carolina, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Washington

16-team playoffs = 8 per conference; 4 division winners plus 4 wild cards.

Totally agree with you! Personally, I can't believe Quebec City doesn't already have a team. Especially now that Quebec has themselves a big, beautiful, NHL sized stadium. Hopefully the Canadian dollar gets a bit stronger and that'll help their case. If Seattle gets a team, it looks like the only way Houston and Quebec get in is through relocation, as you've noted. Otherwise, they can expand again to 34, but that's getting too big, IMO.

I think Houston could work. It's the 4th largest city in the US, and the largest without a NHL team.

Looking at metro populations, Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land is #5 and Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell is #9. I think there's enough people with an appetite for hockey in Houston.

Houston? No

Why not? The Houston Aeros should have been included in the WHL merger to begin with.

Houston is not a great sports city which is why I wonder. The reason to bring a team here is that it's a huge market. It's the largest market in North America without a team and there isn't a close second (Houston is much bigger than Atlanta now).

Even if you get 15% of the support you'd get in a Canadian or Frost Belt city, you'd still be doing well. All you need is 10,000 die-hands out of 7 million and at least 5,000 casual fans. I think it's doable, regardless of Houston's fair weather (in every sense of that phrase) issues.

Houston is very doable. I'm originally from Houston and people really don't understand how much Houston loved the Aeros. I went to Aeros games that had more people than Astros games.

http://q13fox.com/2018/03/02/nhl-seattle...-received/

So 10,000 people made deposits for season tickets within 12 minutes
24,000 people laid down money within 24 hours
33,000 people paid for season ticket deposits in 3 days

Appears Seattle “sufficiently” impressed the NHL on season ticket sales to be granted an expansion team.

Sounds like they are making a strong case.

I like it. Here's the logo and color scheme from the when the team existed previously:

[Image: search?q=seattle+metropolitans&F...ORM=IARRTH]

The colors are similar to the Minnesota Wild. I'd like to see them integrate a lime green shade similar to the Seahawks and Sounders.

RE: Seattle's NHL expansion bid getting closer to reality
I still suspect we’ll see relocations to Houston and Quebec by 2 of the Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers. My guess would be the Panthers to Quebec and become the Nordiques as well as the Coyotes to Houston and become the Aeros.

With the All-Star game already being split into 4 teams, instead of doing strictly geographical divisions, perhaps something like the below which would force Canadian participation. In my opinion, it’d be better for the sport. I’m also for the playoffs being the top 16 from whatever divisions (#1 vs #16, etc.)

Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec
Pacific: Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Vegas, Colorado, Dallas, Houston
Central: St. Louis, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Buffalo
Atlantic: Boston, New York I, New York II, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay

With the Canes new owner I don't think they will be moving any time soon.

The Coyotes have been in a odd financial situation for years ...aren't they still owned by the NHL? Florida has been rumored to be in financial issues too. I doubt Quebec has solved their financial issues to regain a team again.... although maybe they have. Would Houston actively be seeking an expansion or relocation team?

RE: Seattle's NHL expansion bid getting closer to reality
I think Carolina stays, too. Quebec may be small but having a Canadian fan base can do wonders. Houston has been in the discussion for years to get s relocated NHL team. They almost got the Oilers in the 90s and have been brought up as an option for other relocation efforts. It helps that the new Rockets owner is pushing for a team as well as the Dallas Stars owner verbally do so as well. Plus, Houston is the largest city without an NHL team. It could be an Atlanta thing where a team would never work well or a Florida thing where Texas is a 1-team state, but I think it’s worth a shot.
