Northern Illinois has apparently added another former Bearcat to its football program. Hearing Walt Stewart will be on the Huskies coaching staff joining grad transfer PK Andrew Gantz in DeKalb, Illinois for the 2018 season. Excellent hire.

Was EKU DL Coach, played at Cincy
Walter Stewart was chosen as EKU's defensive line coach in January 2016.
In his first season, Stewart helped a defense that allowed fewer passing yards than any EKU team since 2009 and fewer passing touchdowns (12) than any Colonel defense since 2005 (9). Also, under his guidance defensive end Aaron Patrick earned first team all-conference honors and was chosen as a Sophomore All-American by Hero Sports. Patrick was second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 42nd in the nation with 0.64 sacks per game.
Over the final eight games of the 2016 season, EKU registered 21 sacks and for the season was 27th in FCS with 2.45 sacks per game. On Oct. 22, Eastern Kentucky’s defense held No. 2 Jacksonville State without an offensive touchdown, the first time a defense had done that to the Gamecocks since 2012. The Colonels also held JSU to 106 yards below their offensive average.
During the 2015 season, Stewart was the defensive ends coach at Florida A&M University. Before that he worked at Tennessee as a graduate assistant in 2013 and 2014.
Stewart was a defensive lineman at the University of Cincinnati for head coach Butch Jones. He earned the team’s most improved award and most outstanding defensive lineman award as a senior in 2012. He helped the Bearcats win four Big East Championships and made four bowl appearances.
“Walter is a high energy coach that connects well with our players,” said Head Coach Mark Elder. “Having played the position at a high level, Walter has great knowledge of the defensive line and is a tremendous technician. He brings a high level of toughness to the program.”
Stewart earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Cincinnati in 2012. He and his girlfriend Rebecca Borukhovsky have one daughter – Niya.\
