You know.. I believe we have reached a saturation point with football.. its practically a 10 month even. As much as I love football.. it is nice to get a breather.

The window was missed with the original XFL. We are now at a point of declining attendance, declining TV ratings and overall declining interest. A competing league will never survive. A proper minor league system, where you expect 5,000-10,000 people a game and salaries that match that can work. A place for guys only 2 years out of high school, JUCO guys, sophomores that have worn out there welcome at a 4 year school. Maybe that NFL backup QB that is looking to prove his ability in actual games. The RFL, Regional Football League, had a decent plan back 25 plus years ago. Mobile had a team, but the league wasn't funded properly and didn't complete the whole first season.
Maybe, but the Arena League is tanking as well.

The arena league isn't real football. As an avid football fan, I've never been interested in arena football, and I've tried. I've watched it, I've been to games and just can't get into it.

XFL coming back
Most of America would say the same about the (insert football league name here that has tried this since 1975).

RE: XFL coming back
I'd find it really cool if there was a football minor league for all 32 NFL teams. Have them located near the general location of those fan bases. Expand the NFL draft to 15 rounds or so and start the league just a couple weeks after the draft, filling those teams with the rookies, other young players and several vets still competing to fill the NFL rosters. Season go through July and have a short playoff in August which will cut the NFL preseason short like the NFL has been debating about.
If Carolina was to have a team in say Raleigh, (Carter-Finley Stadium is off campus), I'd definitely attend some games.

But this is just me dreaming.

RE: XFL coming back
Most of the appeal of the former XFL was in doing things in a brash, edgy way. Now you are trying to appeal to the upset-about-kneeling crowd and mandating no criminal records, etc. Doesn't really seem like it will fly too well. People see declining ratings for the NFL due to changing viewing habits and saturation of entertainment options and want to make it political, it's idiotic. I went to an XFL game in Orlando once, had a good time. Be interesting to see if it works out, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

This is why it could only work as a minor league and in mid sized or small cities with no major league sports. People have become very discerning in big metros about their entertainment dollar. Alternatively, as a team owner (in this case Vince), how low does your budget have to be to make a profit when you will be averaging maybe 15k a game? Mind you, the main attraction here is Vince McMahon is starting a football league vs. Harvey Johnson is starting a football league. That luster will last like a week.

That's the way I see it as well. You wonder why the NFL smart guys can't figure this out.

There are so many municipal stadiums out there from cities that would do anything to fill them 5-6 weekends a year. Then drop the NFL preseason to two games. You could actually combine teams and have a league of 16 teams, each team representing two NFL teams. Teams could be made up of 15-20 from two different NFL teams and the 10 or so locally signed players to bring the roster up to 45.(NFL rosters are 52).

They play with NFL rules, with NFL refs, that way they can also go through a minor league system before blowing calls in "real" games.

With the WWE pushing an international agenda what if the XFL had only 1 American Team that played in different location in the USA for there home game? A true "Americans team"!

Side 1
USA
Mexico
Germany
UK

Side 2
India
UAE
Japan
Australia

Vince said in the introductory press conference that this league is a completely different venture from WWE.

He said he is going to hire "football people" to run the league and that no WWE employee, himself included, will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the league. This isn't the old XFL rebooted. I think it is has a chance to grab a niche market.

RE: XFL coming back
Guys, here's the problem

1) The league will have a season that goes from January to April. That means no MLB or MLS stadiums. It will also be cold af in much of the country, which will depress turnout. People will freeze half to death to watch the Bears or the Packers but that's something built up over decades.

2) Since this league is seen as a threat to the NFL (or even a political response to the whole "stand" controversy), I think that the NFL probably isn't going to allow the XFL to use their stadiums. I would imagine that most, if not all, of the NFL teams have exclusive pro-football contracts on their stadiums.

3) I also think that many P5 teams aren't going to rent out their stadiums to this league.

4) So basically, there's not going to be a lot of venues open to this league.

5) And then there's the product quality. Its going to feel minor league.

6) A city would have to be exceedingly stupid to use taxpayer subsidies for this league. This has been tried before, and has failed before.

7) People are not going to be interested in paying higher cable bills for this either.

----

Attendance is going to be just awful for this league. I think the universe of people willing to pay 200 bucks to take the family out to see minor league football in February in an outdoor stadium is going to be rather small.

----

Quite frankly, I don't see how this happens unless the NFL agrees to help it out. I don't see that happening.

And many of these reasons are why Arena Football arose. Places like Brownsville, TX, Macon, GA or the like may have arenas but might not have an available municipal stadium. Cities with municipal stadiums and not pro football is a limited number.

You guys are joking right???

1) The league will have a season that goes from January to April. That means no MLB or MLS stadiums. It will also be cold af in much of the country, which will depress turnout. People will freeze half to death to watch the Bears or the Packers but that's something built up over decades.

Plenty of municipal football stadiums that can be used with out using MLB or MLS stadiums, and I agree, it should be in the spring.

Again, plenty of municipal stadiums available without using NFL stadiums.

3) I also think that many P5 teams aren't going to rent out their stadiums to this league.

Don't think most P5 cities would be the market for a minor league football team.

4) So basically, there's not going to be a lot of venues open to this league.

Again, plenty of stadiums available.

5) And then there's the product quality. Its going to feel minor league.

It should be a minor league, it's the only way it should be.

6) A city would have to be exceedingly stupid to use taxpayer subsidies for this league. This has been tried before, and has failed before.

No one needs to use tax dollars for a stadium already built, probably 50+ years ago.

7) People are not going to be interested in paying higher cable bills for this either.

There are plants of outlets needing content, so no reason for a new channel.

Just for your help, and I'm pulling these out of my head of stadiums that could be used: Ladd Stadium, Legion Field, Crampton Bowl, that stadium in Dothan we played a game at in our second season, that stadium in Columbus, GA, the Citrus Bowl(the stadium in Orlando), Cotton Bowl, Liberty Bowl, the dome in St Louis, Alamo Dome, some of the city owned high school football stadiums in Texas, War Memorial in Little Rock, the stadium in San Diego(Qualcomm I think is what it was called), there is a stadium in Jackson MS.......get the idea, there are plenty of venues that could be used. And again, these are just the ones I could think of while typing this.

Edit: Add the stadium at the Louisville Convention Center.

The XFL is not putting a team in Ladd Stadium...I also think that P5s are going to be reluctant to take on a tenant too, ESPECIALLY if that tenant is a league that is going to draft underclassmen.

Sure, Here's the available venues

1) San Diego (maybe) - Qualcomm stadium - Problem is that MLS and SDSU are fighting over who gets to buy it and if someone does buy it, they're going to want to make changes to the facility. Maybe. If not, there's no place to play in SD

2) Los Angeles - They can probably get the Coliseum or the Rose Bowl. They will be paying full market rent. Unfortunately, the upgrades necessary for the Olympics might make it unavailable. Since their season overruns with MLS and MLB, there's no place to play in LA otherwise.

3) Oakland - Oakland Coliseum.

4) Phoenix - Maybe Arizona State will let them rent their stadium. I'm thinking they'll say no. Most P5's will say no. G5s probably will say yes.

5) Salt Lake - Unless the Univ. of Utah wants to let them rent out their stadium...no place to play. Also too cold.

6) Denver - No place to play. Also too cold.

7) Oklahoma City - OU ain't renting out their stadium. No place to play

8) Dallas - Cotton Bowl

9) San Antonio - Alamodome

10) Houston - Either Rice or UH could rent out their stadium

11) Memphis - Liberty Bowl

12) St Louis - EDJones Arena

13) MSP - No place to play other than U of Minnesota. Also too cold

14) Milwaukee - No place to play

15) Chicago - No place to play

16) Indianapolis - No place to play

17) Detroit - Maybe they could rent out EMU's stadium. Too cold too.

18) Cleveland - No place to play. Also too cold

19) Columbus - The old MLS stadium is available. Bring a jacket

20) Cincinnati - Perhaps U of C will rent out their stadium. Too cold

21) Pittsburgh - No stadium available

22) Buffalo - U of B stadium. But no. They aren't getting a team

23) NYC - Where would they play if the Giants and Jets both have refusal rights on their NFL stadiums for pro football? Rutgers?

24) New England - Only thing available might be the stadium in East Hartford.

25) Philly - Is there a place there? I'm not aware of anything bigger than Villanova, which seats 12,500. Maybe they could play at U of D in Newark, DE (which is getting a bit out of the Philly market) and it seats 22k

26) Baltimore - Maybe play at Annapolis?

26) DC - RFK...What a friggin dump that would be. And don't ask the DC government to front you any cash to do any renovations.

27) Charlotte - UNCC stadium

28) Raleigh/Durham - Nothing available unless NCSU, UNC or Duke want a tenant.

29) Atlanta - Georgia State

30) Jacksonville - Nothing available

31) Orlando - Citrus Bowl

32) Tampa/St Petersburg - Nothing available.

33) Miami - FIU

34) New Orleans - Nothing available

35) Nashville - Nothing available in town unless Vandy wants to rent. Otherwise they could rent from MTSU or WKU I suppose.

36) Las Vegas - UNLV stadium is available, but ... is Vegas going to be busy digesting the Raiders.

37) Kansas City - No facility

38) Seattle - No facility unless UW wants to rent to them. They probably don't.

----

Now 1m plus metros cities with no pro teams

1) Birmingham - Legion Field

2) Louisville - I don't see a facility unless U of L wants to rent to them

3) Honolulu - No...just no.

4) Albuquerque - UNM

------

Unless the NFL wants to help them, and I don't see why they would, or a city wants to build them a facility (which is going to be difficult), They're going to have difficulty getting a league off the ground.

Unless this is purely a minor league. Sure you could put a league together with Mobile, Little Rock, Shreveport, Jackson, Atlanta Memphis, Birmingham, Dallas, Orlando, San Antonio, DC, Oakland, Miami, St Louis, and maybe a team in Southern California.....But man, oh man, its going to look like NAIA vs FBS in comparison to the NFL. The stadiums will all be either old or bare bones college erector set buildings.

McMahon says he will personally put 100 m into this venture and is probably looking for 100m more. That's not going to get very far, even at lower salaries for long unless people start showing up, in significant numbers, and start paying significant amounts. Just so you know...100 million dollars doesn't even finance 1 years' worth of football in the Sun Belt. And our cost (scholarship and other costs) per football player....is around 50k per.

He says he wants 8 teams. With a 44 player roster. I think he needs around 2 B to even start to try to pull this off. No city in their right mind would finance this. So he's got 100m committed. Lets see if he can raise another 1.9 Billion.

RE: XFL coming back
The last version of the XFL was marketing themselves as a better alternative to the NFL, and they played in NFLmstadiums then. Really no reason for them not to play in them this year.

Ultimately, I think we all agree that it should be in the spring, not the winter, and that it should be a minor league system working with the NFL, not against them.

In all, it's a fun conversation.

XFL coming back
Plenty of reasons not to play in NFL stadiums. Lol

.

Again no league has lasted more than 3 years in the TV Era and only one has lasted more than 18 months.

Some people cannot stand not being the center of attention. McMahon is one. No reason whatsoever for the XFL. Wasn't before. Isn't now.

Amen to this.

There is not enough football talent for this to be worthwhile. Canada is the true minor league to the NFL, and it should be. They have their own quirky style and it works for them. This was forced almost 20 years ago and it's forced today.

You're probably right but I went to every home game when we had that RFL team that year and the announced attendance was usually in the low 20K's - good enough for either number one (I think that was the rank), or number two ranking. Of course, the XFL concept is different (national vs regional rosters full of ex Bama and AU players like the RFL had) and we also didn't have college football at USA - the RFL was the only game in town for Mobilians at the time.

Just saying while it's not likely, I sure wouldn't rule a Mobile XFL team out. After all, there are more than a million people in the extended metro area.

RE: XFL coming back
St Louis - The Dome at America's Center

Little Rock - LR War Memorial

Memphis - Liberty Bowl

Jackson - MS Veterans Stadium

San Antonio - AlamoDome

Mobile - Ladd Peebles Stadium

Orlando - Citrus Bowl

Birmingham - Legion Field

Southern cities love their football and WWE...plus, weather in say Feb/March would be MUCH more pleasant in the South.
