Kent State vs. Ball State
The Flashes host Ball State on Tuesday night at the MAC Center. The Cardinals enter with an overall record of 12-7, including a 3-3 conference mark. After riding a 9 game heater that included a win at Notre Dame, BSU has come back down to earth during conference play.

This is a relatively important home game for the Flashes. You hate to drop one at home to a team that will probably be jockeying for similar seeding come early March.

Ball State is balanced. Ten players see 10 minutes or more per night and seven of them average 7 points or more per night. Leading the way on offense are Taylor Persons and Kyle Mallers. Persons is a 6'3 junior transfer from Northern Kentucky who averages 14 points a game on 51% shooting. Mallers is a 6'7 sophomore who averages just over 10 points per game.

6'8 sophomore Tahjai Teague appears to be their best defender. He averages about 6 rebounds per game and leads the team in blocks and steals. 6'9 junior Trey Moses leads the team in rebounding.

Here's to a big crowd, keeping composed and notching a home win! I haven't called one in a while but I'm calling this one for the good guys.

Kent State - 71
Ball State - 66
Zabo refuses to cool down and goes for 22

GO FLASHES!

Nice win. It should have been a easier but we had two bad stretches and made it interesting. Pippin played a very good overall game (except for shooting 1 of 6 from 3 point line). He had a few nice blocks and plenty of rebounds. He needs to do that every night and the team will be tougher to beat.

Real good game by Pippen. Zabo continued his really strong play too. Interesting that at the end of regulation the we choose to not call a timeout and just let Zabo iso. Shows the trust the coaches have in him. Looked like Walker got upset about it and got yanked to start OT. To Walker's credit I thought he needed more looks down the stretch. He did have a pretty good game. I'm definitely ok with Zabo getting the last shot though. Duling looked good tonight too. His offense is really starting to come around.

Maybe Walker was upset at the same thing I was upset with. Zabo waited way too long to attack. Starting with 3 seconds left gives you no margin for error when you are trying to work.

Yes. I was thinking there was no need to hit a shot right on the buzzer. Allow a second to get set up for a rebound/shot.
As far as BSU, I really don't like that team. They were taking some shots. What was even stranger, the officials seemed ti be okay with that. Even with our shots on some of their players.
Glad we got the win. Now on to the first place team in the division.

Another nice home win for the Flashes. Some good trends starting to develop among the starters with Zabo putting up nice points and De La Rosa staying on the floor. The starters are logging some big minutes so it would be nice to have one more guy capable of coming off the bench. Is there such a player on the roster? Or is the better hope for Ridenour, Peterson and Duling to be more productive?

RE: Kent State vs. Ball State
I believe that the quality coaching by Rob is really beginning to reveal itself. The development of Szabo is amazing. He is not the same player that first came to us. He is still getting better. DLR is another example. He is much better this year than last and I believe that he will get better as time goes on. I am really impressed with the progress of Danny Pippen. Quite honestly, last year I had many doubts about him. Now I see that he is very young but his ability is just beginning to be tapped. He is headed for stardom if he continues his present path. We have to mention Dulling at this point. I am seeing that he is just now beginning to understand the effort required to play defense at this level. He obvious relied upon his awesome physical statue to rule at the high school level. For the first time vs BSU, I saw him fitting into the team approach to basket ball. My friends, our program is better than the record for now and IMO, it is in good hands.

To me, it looks like the game is finally slowing down for Mr. Duling. It has been a period of adjustment, but he seems increasingly comfortable in the flow of the game. We’re seeing his startling skills beginning to shine. He is stunningly quick around the basket. This is going to be fun as he develops more and more.

I get what you're saying but I still like how Zabo timed it. He wound up getting stripped by the big and the guard leaked out. If there was 3 or 4 more seconds on the clock they get the ball to a guard on the run with no one between him and the basket. I think we were in control most of the game, De La Rosa had 4 fouls but other than that we didn't have any foul trouble, and we're at home. In that situation I prefer to be sure you're taking the last shot so worst case it goes to OT.

yes.. was thinking the same thing.

PS I LOVE this team!! :)
PS our 10-10 record belies how goods this team is: balanced, extremely talented, well-coached, experienced.
PS just booked plane ticket to CLE for MAC Tournament :)
PS very much looking forward to the buffalo game next week.

Buffalo game should be extremely telling for both teams re: how close or how far one program is from the other...

Judging from box scores Duling is figuring it out ... but consistent lack of rebounding indicates that's one area he really needs to shore up going forward ...

ACTUALLY ... looks like the player to watch may be Pippen ... seems the staff has come to grips with him not being much offensively on the block ... and Pippen seems to realize if he rebounds, he plays. If he rebounds at a high clip, he'll likely prove to be a double-figure scorer by accident. ... AND HE'S JUST S SOPH-OH-MORE... which means maybe some kind of post game develops over time ...

I'd think a 12-8 record or better might show us to be a better team. The Southeast Lousiana and Northern Illinois losses are hard to reconcile. Wins against Wright State or Valparasio would have been a better indicator of 'good'

I'm not sold on 'well-coached' yet this year, though I've thought Senderhoff coached well in the past. The tide might have turned a bit starting with the Ohio win, but before that I thought they looked sloppy and out-of-control at times.

RE: Kent State vs. Ball State
Is there anything wrong with a team that needs time to acclimate itself to the coach and vice-versa? We saw last year that we played our best basketball when it mattered most. Would anyone really be disappointed if in the next few weeks we peaked and then won again in Cleveland? With the nature of our conference, the reality is none of these games matter. Now, if you are going to take pride in the Not Invited Tourney or the other schwas tournaments, that statement isn't true.

Ahhh the old none of these games matter argument. So explain then how anybody expects attendance to improve or excitement to surround the program? On the other hand, that sort of mindset has served Eastern Michigan well over the last fifteen years.

Dude. Are you kidding me? They matter from a development standpoint. To get you where you want to be at the end. That's it. If an at-large bid was possible, they would matter more. It isn't. If you need a team that through 20 games is 16-4 to attend, you aren't a fan. Those are just facts. Sorry if you don't like them.

My son plays on the best 5th grade AAU team in Memphis. The coaches say all the time to the kids, "TRUST THE PROCESS". That's what I would say to you and anyone else that puts stock into individual games. If we were Kentucky or someone who has a chance at the NCAA tournament as an at-large bid (if that is how you define a successful season), the games would matter more but that is not our reality.

Fair enough. I guess I do value a 23 and 9 team that plays a NIT game or two. Heck, I would thrilled to see a 20 and 10 team in the CIT if I get to watch on CBSSports network. I believe that Exposure matters and winning is (sorta) everything.

RE: Kent State vs. Ball State
Making the NCAAs has to be one but not the only goal. If you believe there is no way
to get an at large bid then you also believe there is no way to win the NCAA so why bother. I myself would rather go 22-8 and win the MAC regular season and take whatever happens after that. Telling 5th graders to trust the process makes sense. They still have a lot to learn. Telling college players, most of which are playing at the highest level they will ever play, to trust the process is just a way to keep their spirits up as they lose games.

There is no doubt your opinion is gaining ground as most pro sports (especially the NBA) has devalued the regular season. College football is now about 3 games at the end of the season and very little else. Etc, etc. I just don’t buy that trend. You will never convince me otherwise. Unless of course you just start with the playoffs. Maybe the NCAA could just play a 350 team triple elimination tournament after a few exhibition games to warm up. ESPN would love it.

The Indians winning 102 games this year including an American League 22 game winning streak made the six month regular season pretty damn exciting and it wasn’t ruined for me by one bad week in the playoffs. That season beat all the Eric Wedge managed seasons (the inventor of the phrase trust the process) by far.

Your greedy asking for 23-9. I’m happy with 22-8.

With the MAC, the #1 seed doesn't help out much. However, winning 4 games in 4 days is not an easy task. Althought we did this, it is not a road easily traveled and will frequently punch a ticket to a season-ender.
I like to see that we have a working offense. Rob's early teams were very stale, as many of us know. If we can work out some kinks, this offense could take us far.

Don't forget these games matter for recruiting too. Beating a conference opponent on the court gives you extra bullets to use against them in recruiting battles.
