RE: Sunlight reminder for the Vitamin D Deficient
We lived through the great Midwest and C-USA for basketball. This conference is top to bottom and in funding and facilities in far better shape than those. We also lived through getting worn to a pulp in the BE where nearly everyone was doing an Irish jig if they went .500. I don't mind this conference for basketball one bit.

I think we just have some fans that are never gong to be happy regardless. Maybe its just this board - I don't go to other boards so I don't know how those fans react. But for crying out loud anyone who is sour pussing this kind of season so far either forgets what we were doing many years in the 1990's, has a pre-existing condition to be a sour puss, or doesn't know what they are watching.

This.

At least in the old C-USA and Great Midwest days, they were dominating and either winning the Conference or Conference Tournament year after year. Those were fun times, even if they weren't making very many deep runs in March (which they weren't). So far UC is 1-4 as Conference Champs and 0-4 as Tourney Champs. And it's not like this Conference is the Big East. It SHOULD be winnable. If they run the table this year and is a sign of things to come in future years, then I think the attitude may change.

So why even follow the team between the Florida game and Wichita State? Only bad can happen, apparently. A waste of time at best and a bunch of heartache at worst. Seems like a terrible way to be fan.

You're a good poster and bring a lot to this Board with your knowledge of UC athletics/history, spending your hard earned dollars on it and your passion and support for it. But, in this case I'm not sure why you have such a beef with folks. You're the loudest one in the room trying to prove a point on a sports message board about how everyone should feel the same way you do. You called me a sour puss in a past thread I guess because I wasn't doing back flips over Mick or the fact that I shouldn't factor in our past conference tourney and ncaa tourney performances. I don't see things as black and white or that they are mutually exclusive when it comes to supporting and rooting for our beloved Bearcats - during the regular season or otherwise. Maybe I'm spending too much time on here but I support my university and the programs and facilities that they continue to build up. Ok, so I and others may b_itch or vent once in a while. What's the big deal? I would rather have fans passionate and care to give their opinions than have no interest or a cadaver-like pulse on here. No matter what our feelings are - happy, sour puss, or somewhere in-between, we're fans all the same.

Define 'good'?

Using stats, we have a lot of chances for good wins...

RPI wise there are multiple good wins to be had for UC:

Team RPI
WSU 27
Houston 50
SMU 54
UCF 55
UCONN 90
Tulane 91
Memphis 95

The conference has 8 teams in RPI Top 100.

Those are considered good wins.

Last I checked the AAC has more RPI Top 100 teams than the Big East, B12 and PAC.

RE: Sunlight reminder for the Vitamin D Deficient
With Houston rising and Tulane and SMU and WSU, the AAC is solid.

If traditional programs get it going again (Memphis, Temple, and UCONN), this conference will be what many of us envisioned at the start (for basketball): legit power conference.

Heck even UCF isn't putrid anymore.

Really just USF and ECU are dregs at this point. All conferences have them.

You left out Temple who sits at 46 in the RPI right now. UC has like 4 tier 1 games left and 5 tier 2 games left of their 12 remaining games... the other 3 are solid home games as well. Plenty of chances for resume building wins. Really home games against UConn and Tulsa are the only games that would be viewed by the committee as close to bad losses.

A good win is one you brag about to Kentucky, Ohio State, Duke, Michigan State fans. Saying "We beat Temple (Tulane, Memphis, East Carolina, etc)!" impresses no one.

We will not have such an opportunity until Wichita State, and then the NCAA tournament.

I guess if you limit good wins to that definition fine, but that seems crazy to me. A good win is a win against a good team or a win that improves your resume for March. The goal is to win a national championship and that's easier to do with a good seed. UC has a ton of chances for resume improving wins that could get them a high seed in March. Those are good wins if your goal isn't just "bragging about" the wins.

Wichita State doesn't fall in that category either.

You having wins to brag to coworkers about doesnt do jack for NCAA seeding. Beating Top 100 RPI teams does, regardless of names on uniforms.

Neither would Xavier or Florida for that matter. And UCLA is down this year. A bragless schedule. Woe is us, we have nothing to tell our Duke friends . . .

This is absolutely and unequivocally the best team we've had since Steve Logan's senior year. Mick's only sweet 16 team may have been playing at this level at the end of the season, but certainly not with the consistency of this group. If you can't enjoy this team it's hard for me to understand why you bother being a fan at all. I do think the vast majority are and I get the skepticism given the tournament issues, but if we're being honest this is the only team Mick has had where you look and think... "this should be at least a second weekend team." He's had other teams capable of doing it (and one that did), but no team that you looked at and said, "yea this team will be playing into the second weekend." Nothing is guaranteed, but this team is a completely different animal. It's the kind of team we've been waiting for the last 15 years. I hope people appreciate it.

RE: Sunlight reminder for the Vitamin D Deficient
BTW last year I broke down the Bearcat basketball teams from the time Huggins got here through the end of last season. This is the first Mick Cronin team that can get in the list of great Bearcat teams. They are tracking towards that. There is work left to be done, but this has been a really fun season so far.

The Great Seasons:
1992- Final Four, Regular Season Champion, Conference Tournament Champion, Four Seed in the Tournament.
2000- Ranked Number 1 most the season, Undefeated Regular Season Conference Champions, 1st in the RPI, 10-2 against the RPI top 50, 19-3 against the RPI top 100… just a dominating season. 2 seed in the tournament
1993- Elite Eight, Conference Regular Season Champions, Conference Tournament Champions, 2 seed in the tournament
1996- Elite Eight, Conference Regular Seasons Champions, Conference Tournament Champions, 2 seed,
2002- Conference Regular Season Champions, Conference Tournament Champions, 1 seed, RPI #3, 8-2 v. RPI top 50, 17-3 v. RPI top 100. #2 kenpom adjusted efficiency (first year he kept that stat)

The Very Good Seasons:
1999- Only 6 losses, Regular season champions, 3 seed in the tournament, won great Alaskan Shootout over Historically great Duke team. Made round of 32. 8-3 vs. RPI top 50, 12-4 over top 100.
2012- Clearly Mick’s best overall season despite a disappointing start. 4th in a loaded Big East, Conference tournament finals, sweet 16. 8-6 v. RPI top 50, 11-8 vs. top 100. Only 31 kenpom but they were a different team once they went small.
1998- Regular Season and Tournament Conference Champions, 2 seed in tournament. 9th in Final AP Poll.
1997- Preseason number 1, Regular Season Conference Champions, 3 seed in tournament. Final AP Rank of 10. Disappointing overall season, but still a really good season.
2014- Tied for regular season conference title with defending champs ahead of eventual champs, 5 seed in tournament, 6-6 v. RPI top 50, 10-7 v. RPI top 100, tourney results disappointing, but that team ahead a really good year. Only 27 in kenpom, but top 10 in adjusted defense.
2017- 16-2 conference record, 6 seed, 3-4 RPI top 50, 6-5 v. top 100, no bad losses, conference tournament finals, 2nd round NCAA tournament. 22 kenpom. Top 15 in Polls on multiple occasions.
2004- Regular Season and Tournament Champions, 4 seed in tournament, 7-6 v. RPI top 50, 12-6 v. top 100, no bad losses. 17 in kenpom. Maybe should be higher but hard to get 2nd round dismantling by Illinois out of head.

The Good Seasons:
2001- Regular Season Conference Champion, Sweet 16, 5 seed in tournament, 2-4 Vs. RPI top 50, 9-5 vs. RPI top 100. 4 losses outside RPI top 100. Nice break in tournament, but not a great overall season.
2011- 6th in loaded Big East, 2nd round of NCAA tournament, team that put UC back in the NCAAs, 21st in kenpom. 7-9 v. RPI top 50, 8-9 v. RPI top 100, no bad losses.
2005- 2nd round NCAA tournament, 4-5 vs. RPI top 50, 9-6 v. top 100. 7 seed in NCAA tournament. 19 kenpom.
2015- Round of 32, 6-4 v. RPI top 50, 9-8 v. top 100. Only 43 kenpom. 8 seed.
2016- First round exit, 5-5 v. top 50, only 7-10. 32 kenpom. 9 seed. Team seemed close, but as we know lost a ton of close games.
2013- First Round Exit, 5-10 vs. top 50, 9-12 v. top 100. 40 kenpom, 10 seed.
1995- Conference Tournament Champion, 7 seed, 2nd round exit.
1994- Conference tournament champions, First round exit, 8 seed. 25 in final AP poll.
2006 (AK’s year)- NIT quarterfinals (lost when players suspended), 4-8 vs. RPI top 50, 11-11 v. top 100, 44 kenpom.
2003- First Round Exit, only 17 wins (against 12 losses), 3-6 v. RPI top 50, 8-9 v. top 100, 36 kenpom

OK Seasons:
2010- NIT second round, 3-11 RPI top 50, 8-16 RPI top 100, kenpom 68, great start, team not quite ready.
1991- NIT, 18 wins, 10.62 Strength of Record According to Sports Reference
1990- Huggs first year, NIT, 20 wins, 7.19 SOR According to Sports Reference.
2009- 1-9 v. RPI top 50, 7-12 v. RPI top 100. 86 kenpom

Amen.

I’m having more fun watching this team than I have had since the Lance and Sean year. Before that Lo’s senior year.

Sun is out again this fine morning.

19-2, 8-0 with a 2 game lead in the AAC

#6 in Kenpom
#6 in BPI (may go up to 5 when updated)
#7 in Sagarin
#17 in RPI

Dare I say possibly up to 6 or 7 in national polls?

It’s a good day.

^This. This is Mick's best team. They are complete...offense, defense, calm under pressure...the only thing really lacking is a decent team FT percentage.

But it also makes the blow out loss to XU a total headscratcher.
I didn't expect to win as it is a road game against a rival...
but getting blown out?

Agree with everyone. This team is really good. I get annoyed sometimes at the way Mick is constantly yelling and seems angry most of the time, But I understand why he is doing it. If you watched him against Memphis he was constantly on his feet coaching them up. When he pulled guys he sat them down next to him and went over whatever mistakes were made. We all know this conference has performed better this year, but some times we don't actually play anyone that is all that great for a few games in a row. He is getting them ready to face elite teams come March. Really pleased with the coaching job he and the staff have turned in so far this year.
