Also 2018 LB Matthew McElroy seems to have taken an official visit this weekend. His 247 profile has him with no offers, but interest from a ton of really good academic programs.

I had Rice at #123 and Texas State at #128, while Massey (composite) had Texas State at #126 and Rice at #127. Only the finest programs seem to be interested.

So if you have a choice between a bad program with the academics of Texas State, and a bad program with the academics of Rice.....

The old Groucho Marx saying seems to playing in the back of my head about this guy decommiting and even considering Texas State. To me the choice there is an absolute 'no-brainer'.... but some might characterize his considering Texas State with the same phrase but used differently....

What's wrong with the academics at Texas State? They have FAR superior programs to Rice in several areas.

Texas State also has a 71% acceptance rate. Pretty significant difference (by many factors) between that and Rice.

I'll take that as you would prefer a free ride to Texas State and the accompanying diploma from there as opposed to a free ride and Rice diploma. Got it.

I really detest elitism (and some does come from Ricies...), but to be honest I would love to be in room where this guy (the decommit) says to his friends/kids how he passed up Rice to get that Texas State degree.

This is kind of like the dude who brags about passing up a free Mercedes to get a free Escort......

Oh come on now. Every university has a few solid programs let’s not act like the student body at Texas state is anything close to Rice (or UT or A&M). Much more similar to UTSA or UNT. UTEP lets anyone in so you can’t even compare to them.

No question that Rice has a higher academic rating than TX State. However, not everybody wants to major in engineering, etc. TX State and schools like it can offer some majors that Rice can’t. Like Hospitality, Law Enforcement, Forensics.. and if your goal is to teach, it’s one of the best places to get a graduate degree in Education, Administration etc.
Those majors appeal to a lot of students, including 3-4 star athletes.

I don't think we are actively recruiting Oliver.

Looks like Gunnar Henderson committed to University of Incarnate Word. Don't know if he was officially offered by Rice or not after his official visit.

If we assume this is the case for some of them - how is a family of modest means supposed to front the $65K for the walk-on year with no guarantee that they'll ever be offered an athletic scholarship? As pointed out by others here, if the player's career ambitions are realistic (i.e., not going to the NFL) and his desire is to teach, coach, etc -- it is perfectly rational to chose SWTS I mean Texas State or another state school purely on affordability grounds. Yes, Rice is obviously a stronger academic school, but depending on career path the expected ROI from the experience may not warrant it for all.

I was talking about the fact that someone we were apparently recruiting- and had on an official visit- committed to Incarnate Word. Not a commentary from me on TxSt. Competing with Tx State for recruits doesn't bother me nearly as much. At least it's the same level of competition.

I guess it depends on how you define "modest means", but I believe Rice is quite generous with financial assistance. You can run through some scenarios on the calculator here:

https://app.myintuitionapp.org/instituti...testimator

Assuming a family of US-median income ($60k) with $60k in savings (optimistic?), the expected family contribution is less than $10k per year.

- IIRC the average American family's savings are negative, something like -$30k
- An expected family contribution of $10k a year when the family makes $60k is essentially unaffordable.

- Thankfully Rice covers 100% of tuition if your family makes < $80k/year, last I checked at least.

Robert French committed to Rice. Don't know if this has already been posted yet. 2* w/ offers from Yale, Penn, and Western Kentucky.

Added French to the initial list. Good news. He's also teammates with Riley Smith so perhaps that helps us get him as well.

This will be one of the more national recruiting classes we have. It will be interesting to see how many states we sign kids from.

Great news about French. Hope it helps with Smith.

With regard to Henderson, he didn’t have an offer. Was a PWO candidate.

He was probably not a Div 1 player and the new coaching staff recognized this.
