For how long has Otaviano had three stars? I thought he was unrated last week

247 rating is 3 stars. His “composite rating” is unrated.

JSA: If they are related, it doesn't appear to be a close relation.

Details are on the 2018 Football Recruiting thread:

OMG here we go again. That's why 56 pages of recruiting threads are kind of useless.

No we don't believe so. It's been brought up twice in this thread already.

LOL. Here are links to those earlier posts -- #4/April 2, 2017 and #171/Dec. 9, 2017 -- which contain the same information: that if they are related, it doesn't appear to be a close relation.
Sorry. It was a sincere question. I remember the elder Syptak.

What's the composite rating?

Ancestry.com shows 689 Syptak individuals in its database. It also indicates in 1920 there were 9 Syptak families in the US, 8 in Texas and 1 in Indiana. 1940 census shows a Joe Syptak and a J L Syptak in Fayette County and a Robert J Syptak in Harris County. Forbears.io lists 249 current people worldwide with the surname, of whom 94 are in Texas, almost half in Harris and Brazos Counties. Based on those pieces of information, I would guess the probability of some relationship is fairly high.

Looking at Ancestry.com's public family trees, I've taken both John's (Rice alum) and Jake's (recruit) families back another couple of generations ... still without any family link or common ancestors.

If those trees are accurate (which is not guaranteed), then:

John's great-great grandfather is Joseph Syptak Sr. (b. 3 Nov 1852 in Zadverich, Moravia; married Anna Slacik) ... and his great-great-great grandfather is John Syptak (1820-1900; married Verona (Vera) Kovariak; died in Austin County, Tex.) These folks lived at least some time in Nelsonville, Austin County.

... while ...

Jake's great-great grandfather is Josef (Joe) Syptak (born 4 Nov 1872 in Bohemia; married Anna Sipula (1874-1945); died 1925 in Houston) ... and his great-great-great grandfather is Josef Syptak (1845-1935; married Anna (1843-1901); died in Houston). These folks lived at least sometime in Ellinger, Fayette county ... which is only about 25 miles from Nelsonville.

Maybe we should ask PTH to explore further. :-)

And LIZ Syptak is a Rice alumni of my class or the year behind. Beautiful lady, inside and out.

RE: Mike Bloomgren's 1st Rice recruiting class
Don't know if Jordan Oliver has officially decommitted, but he posted about an offer from Texas State on Twitter so I would assume he's considering his options at the least. A media account also posted that it was his first offer since decommitting, so it's possible we lost him.

Also 2018 LB Matthew McElroy seems to have taken an official visit this weekend. His 247 profile has him with no offers, but interest from a ton of really good academic programs.

I had Rice at #123 and Texas State at #128, while Massey (composite) had Texas State at #126 and Rice at #127. Only the finest programs seem to be interested.

So if you have a choice between a bad program with the academics of Texas State, and a bad program with the academics of Rice.....

The old Groucho Marx saying seems to playing in the back of my head about this guy decommiting and even considering Texas State. To me the choice there is an absolute 'no-brainer'.... but some might characterize his considering Texas State with the same phrase but used differently....

Unless something has changed in the last month (and I doubt it), Rice coaches, in any sport, cannot offer a scholarship unless the individual has been vetted (academically) through the proper channels.
