RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
I guess sarcasm doesn’t translate well on a message board. I could care less if we got a player from the California Prison League, let alone a JUCO, as long as he was 6’10” 250lb! Just pointing out that other schools in our league don’t act so hoity toity when they take a JUCO into their program.

i like his aggressiveness and skill, but 205 lbs? That won't cut it inside in the CAA.

Reminded me a little of Kyle Gaillard, and are we sure Paul is still committed to a fourth year......

Aron Rodgers went to a JUCO out of high school not because of academics, but because he didn't get DI offers. When Jeff Tedford saw how he played his freshman year, he offered him at Cal.

Wasn't Chris Hall (1994-95) a JUCO?

Yes. Not sure on the school, but it was a Texas juco. People assume that good players are at Jucos because of academics. It happens, but many are there because they didn't get offers they wanted.

I remember Rich Veres was a JUCO and did fairly well , he played on the 80-81 team.

And Rich Veres had great grades in high school but went the JUCO route so that maybe he could get a D1 scholarship. I say this because I remember reading the release on Rich when he came to W&M and it spoke to his grades in high school.

To the best of my knowledge, Chris and Rich are the only two JUCO players to have played for W&M during my 40+ years of being a fan.

Yep, the shining moment was when he dunked over Ralph Sampson at U-Hall!

I am sure we admit a fair number of transfer students from Richard Bland College, so our going after a JUCO player should not matter as long as he qualifies academically.

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
Jonathan Holmes now following C Andy Van Vliet (7’0” 230lbs - Antwerp, Belgium) who just announced yesterday that he is transferring from Wisconsin. I assume he is a grad student (since the Tribe need a big man that is immediately eligible) but I haven’t seen that explicitly stated. He has only one year of eligibility left; the NCAA made him sit out his freshman year and took away a year of eligibility because he did not enroll within a year of his high school graduation or something like that.

2018 CAA MBB Transfers
Saw this quote from him at Wisconsin. His defense should fit in just fine with this team.

“On offense, I feel comfortable. That’s not really the issue,” said Van Vliet, who sat out last season after being ruled ineligible by the NCAA for not enrolling at UW within a year of his expected high school graduation. “I think it’s mainly defense right now that’s keeping me from playing. Just staying in front of my man, stopping my man from scoring."

I always thought the Wisconsin transfer coming our way would be Charlie Thomas. We were very involved with his recruiting in high school. He is from Maryland and gets minimal play. There is nothing indicating an intention to transfer, just that I always thought he was a likely candidate. I think that window has passed now, though.

Agree about Charlie Thomas, but:

Badgers Fan Base
@BadgersMBB
Reserve forward Charlie Thomas plans to return for his final season. Forward Alex Illikainen doesn't appear inclined to leave. Andy Van Vliet appeared to have an emotional conversation with one member of the staff, as if he was saying farewell.

Article somewhat sums up van Vliet's scenario at Wisconsin. Would make for two lefty centers!!

Hope this doesn't end up opening a Wisconsin offer for Drew Peterson.

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
Would be a shame if Wisconsin moved in on Peterson since their real need is defense and production from the post. Neither of which are Peterson specialties. Much like former recruit Richard Washington, the transfer watch would be on after Peterson's sophomore year.

I don't think we have space for another guard in the class, but Pitt freshman Parker Stewart asked for his release. He was one of the best 3pt shooters in the ACC and averaged 9 PPG. He definitely would fit in with what we do and thrive in our system. Of course, I'd imagine about 300 other D1 teams would be interested as well including his dad.

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
The implosion of the Pitt program just tossed 8 more players into the transfer pot. Maybe Mr. J or one of the other guys that follow our recruiting more closely than myself will know if we tried to recruit any of these guys.

Freshman guard Parker Stewart, who averaged 10.8 points per game and shot 42.5 percent from 3-point range in conference play, asked for his release earlier this week. He is included among that group of eight players.

That cluster of players includes senior forward Ryan Luther, sophomore forward Kene Chukwuka and four freshmen – guards Marcus Carr and Khameron Davis, as well as forwards Shamiel Stevenson and Terrell Brown. Additionally, Malik Ellison, who sat out last season in adherence to NCAA rules after transferring from St. John’s, also asked for his release.
