After listening to the pre-game I'd make it -16.5. Lol.

Someone must have dropped some big, late money on Akron.

Was it you, BobW? Someone else? It had to come from this board. :lmfao: :lmfao:
Not me. I think most people know that Akron is really bad this year. Major rebuild over there.

Good man, don't bet against EMU at home.

I believe we play UB once this year on the road...

We should theoretically have a good shot at winning each home game. Will we? No. But I don't which home games will be the losses.
From a talent standpoint, EMU definitely should win every remaining home game.

Yes, on paper EMU should win 10-14 MAC Conference games, but when we add in coaching, the players can not overcome that deficiency.

RE: Game Week: Akron and Ohio
The basketball team I saw play the second half against Oakland in Ypsilanti is unquestionably the second best team in the league. Unfortunately I have not seen that team again. A must win is Saturday vs Ohio before a slaughter in Buffalo against a coach (Oates) and a player (Perkins) that we should have had. The MAC really sucks this year and with five games under our belt, we have yet to play a more talented team. That being said we lack coaching and our objective needs to be retaining the Michigan MAC Trophy that we won for the first time last year. It is what it is.

Thanks for the heads up Steve!

Watching the game I must admit that my previous reverence for Oats was misplaced. While I would LOVE to have the Michigan kids he has recruited playing here, he is Rob Murphy plus one. Buffalo was the most talented team in the MAC last year but underachieved and this year they are just plain scary talent wise.

But tonight they fouled the three point shooter three times while exhibiting little fundamental discipline in their entire game. They have Power 5 talent plain and simple.

Western, by contrast, started out in a zone defense and when torched by the three point shot, abandoned it. They gave up their offensive boards when they realized they could not defend the Buffalo fast break. Every time out by WMU resulted in a positive point swing for the Broncos. This game should have been a 30 point blowout but Hawkins outcoached Oats and actually kept it interesting for 35 minutes.

RE: Game Week: Akron and Ohio
UB is an interesting team. Why? This team is the Hurley-Oats team.

Very much an upper classman team which may have signed while Hurley was still coach. I'm thinking of Perkins, Massinburg, etc. (e.g., did they sign in November while Hurley was still the HC).

Add the transfer, Wes Clark, whom I believe came from Oats Romulus program.

I have NO Idea if Oats is the next Hurley or the next Milton Barnes (who won with Braun's players for two years). But there is indeed a lot of talent on that team.

It might takes years to determine if Oats is the luckiest college coach in America, i.e., win for FOUR years with his predecessor's players.

Looking at the roster and the stats, other than Wes Clark, whom Oats coached at Romulus, I believe, all of the top scorers are juniors which means they probably were signed by Hurley.

I'm not sure I see much (except for Wes Clark) from Oats' recruits... I would love to get some input from UB fans...

Looking at the box score for UB:

Four players scored 'all' of the points. Three juniors + Wes Clark, a transfer senior.

All have played ONLY for Oats, not Hurley, but most likely Massinburg, Perkins, and Harris signed in November of their senior years, it would have been while Hurley was the head coach.

So they signed with Hurley but coached by Oats....

I'm not convinced that Oats can recruit.

BTW, I watched the first half of the game and yes they are scary talented. I assume Massingburg is easily MAC POY.

Ok, first off: Oats WAS the recruiter for Hurley. Harris was a JUCO who committed last year and Massinburg committed during the summer after Oats was hired as HC. He wasn’t even on UB’s radar under Hurley.

There are only two players that are holdovers from Hurley: Nick Perkins and Ikenna smart. Smart red shirted his first year (final Hurley year) and Perkins didn’t come in until Oats first year but he committed under Hurley. Oats recruited him and he said he was staying with his commitment because Oats was staying. Smart is the only “true” Hurley recruit.

You can give Hurley the credit for the success of the program that led to the wave of commitments but even the 15-16 championship squad under Oats first season was almost entirely recruited by Oats and co. This current squad much more so.

Oats IS a very good recruiter.

The joke in MI h.s. ball was that Nate was a great recruiter when he was a high school coach.

Thanks for clarifying the details.

The Hurley-Oats combination did a really good job.

The question now is: Is Oats a good X and Os bench coach?

I don't think so at all. Buffalo was loaded last year and under achieved. Then again if you can load the bench with that kind of talent, you will win a lot of games which is what you get paid to do. Hats off to him.

Jerry/Steve,

Buffalo lost key players immediately on Hurley’s departure, yet Oats coaches the team to a MAC tourney championship amidst the turnover and in his first year as head coach. Solid follow up season. And now clearly leading the league.

You are questioning his coaching ability. Why? Because he had a 10 point victory on the road against Western Michigan who is one of the most consistently solid teams in the MAC????

I am not sure I understand where this criticism is coming from, doesn’t seem warranted (nor relevant to this thread/EMU).

I originally was trying to raise the question of whether he was winning based on his abilities or winning based on following in Hurley's shoe steps. This is a perpetual question for many coaches, including our own Milton Barnes who won for 2 years with Braun/Waters players.

He probably deserves more credit than I'm giving him.

And here are the two 4 star (per ESPN) guys Nate Oats has signed letter of intents from for next year:

Oats is legitimately the best recuiter UB has ever had.

Jerry/Steve,

Buffalo lost key players immediately on Hurley’s departure, yet Oats coaches the team to a MAC tourney championship amidst the turnover and in his first year as head coach. Solid follow up season. And now clearly leading the league.

You are questioning his coaching ability. Why? Because he had a 10 point victory on the road against Western Michigan who is one of the most consistently solid teams in the MAC????

I am not sure I understand where this criticism is coming from, doesn’t seem warranted (nor relevant to this thread/EMU).

Ramy the guy has done a great job in Buffalo, his recruiting ability is the reason Hurley got the Arizona gig. But he had the best talent in the MAC last year and did not win a thing. He got outcoached last night in Kalamazoo plain and simple.

But you are correct, he over achieved in his first season despite losing his best player. And most importantly while being outcoached in Kalamazoo last night he got the all important "W" in his schedule column.

Would I rate him as a great basketball theorist and teacher? NO! Would I love to have him at EMU recruiting the same thoroughbreds that he has at Buffalo? HELL YES!
