Blazer Almanac - January 13 - Blazer name turns 40
January 13

Today UAB hosts Louisiana Tech. The Blazers are 7-4 against Louisiana Tech and 7-2 in Birmingham. UAB's biggest win was a 20 point win in 2015. UAB's biggest loss was last year when Louisiana Tech won by 12.

Today is a special anniversary. On this date 40 years ago, UAB became the Blazers. In a campus wide election, the name Blazers were chosen. Other names considered were Barons, and Titans. Happy 40th Birthday, Blazer name.

The Games

The Blazers are 7-3 on this date. They are 6-1 at home on this date.

1982 - UAB beat Utica, a division III school by the score of 73-44. Snow and ice had hit Birmingham and the game was played in front of a intimate crowd of 489 in the cavernous BJCC Coliseum, which sat over 17,000. That is equal to around 2000 fans watching a game at UAB.

1983 - UAB lost at South Florida 64-63.

1986 - #14 ranked UAB hosted South Alabama, who had won 9 of their last 10 games. UAB was 15-2. UAB's only losses were to Duke and UNLV. The Blazers won 77-64.

1988 - Michael Charles was playing his first game after the death of his mother when UAB hosted South Florida. Charles had not practiced in a week. He got winded during the game but played with will and determination. He led UAB in scoring with 16 points as the Blazers won 59-54. UAB's last field goal came with 10:41 to go in the game. They scored only 5 free throws in the last 10 minutes, but it was still enough to win because South Florida could not catch up. After the game, Charles remembered his mother. "She was my reason for playing basketball. Now she's not around to watch and now it seems I don't care if I ever touch a basketball again." Coach Bartow and Charles would clash a lot during his senior year and ultimately end with him being benched for his last game.

1990 - UAB traveled to Cincinnati to play #25 ranked Xavier. UAB was outrebounded 48-20 and only had three offensive rebounds in the second half. Blazers lost 82-61.

1991 - Andy Kennedy set the record for most points in a game on this date in 1991. Against Saint Louis, he scored 41 points, hitting 13 of 20 field goals and 8 of 12 from three point range. He also hit 7 of 8 free throws. UAB won 98-80.

1996 - Five years later, UAB hosted Saint Louis again. The Billikins had never won in Birmingham and were 0-7. After this game, they were 0-8. UAB won 64-55.

2001 - UAB tied the record for fewest points in a half, scoring only 15 points in a loss at home to Southern Miss. Blazers lost 64-52.

2007 - Lawrence Kinnard scored 25 points and Paul Delaney had 21 as UAB won at Tulane 67-60.

2009 - UAB defeated Central Florida 67-60. Robert Vaden scored 19 points.

RE: Blazer Almanac - January 13 - Blazer name turns 40
Choosing an amorphic name like "Blazers" - rather than a specific animal or thing - has led to a variety of mascot representatives from roosters to Vikings to dragons. WKU's "Hill Toppers" presents the same problem. I recall that the green and gold were chosen as team colors at about that time as well.

A similar quandry for the citizens of the United States of America (a descriptive adjective name) that was eventually settled by the US Supreme Court in a ruling that citizens should call themselves "Americans". Since everyone living in North, Central and South America could be "Americans", there had been questions about the proper name for our citizens. It took the USSC to settle the matter.
