Hard to play your average against a physical defense with 6 players. Would have been nice if they missed a few, but other than the one at the 1st half buzzer, they were all good looking shots.

I didn't think their defense was all that impressive.

It wasn't the best defense we will see, but it was physical and it wore us down. A lot of bumping, grabbing, and holding. That is why we were gassed. It takes a lot more energy and oxygen taking body shots and moving around 200 pound plus bodies than it does just running up and down the court. We needed to hit our shots early when we weren't gassed and build a larger lead so we could take the air out of the ball down the stretch and try to win at the FT line. Instead, we missed a bunch of bunnies and all our open 3s and had to dig out of a hole.

Tonight, we will probably cover a lot more real estate running, but probably won't run out of gas because Marshall does not play physical defense.

The missed bunnies were what I was referring to. We had a LOT of open looks that we choked on. We left probably a dozen easy points on the table. That plus even one of our guards having an average game would have been the difference in the outcome.

Got it and agreed. Not sure if the outcome would have been different or not but it certainly would have certainly changes circumstances and given us a better chance.

well yeah...we will always come out as winners if we apply the hypothetical situations where we actually play well enough to win, LOL

Can’t let WKU beat us twice ! Guard the 3 line which we did not do well against WKU and we should be fine.

JJ doesn't like to change his defense during the middle of the season so don't expect us to start guarding the 3 anytime soon!

Lets see how much excitement JJ has brought to this program. Saturday night against a top rival opponent. In the past it is a "sold out" no question about it and difficult to get a hot ticket. I predict 25% empty seats not what the gate says but actual empty seats! JJ your our man!

I would agree that WKU, MTSU, Marshall are the closest things to "rivals" for MBB these days. Yes, in the past when our Saturday conference game was a better regional fit, along with an established rival, a corresponding larger attendance was a result. This is more of a league issue than a coach issue IMO. We need out of this league.

RE: MBB Game - ODU vs Marshall
Despite what the Pilot/ODU listed as the attendance for the WKU game (6,895), which included JJ’s “request” for fan attendance at what arguably is our toughest home opponent this year, there were a lot of empty seats at the WKU game. Add to it that there was good student turnout for the free trinkets but my assessment is that there was a 25% no show rate from members of our regular fan base (those who shoulder most of the cost to fund the athletic program). I do feel that JJ is feeling some degree of heat and my assessment is that next year will be his last here at ODU. He’s done just enough to keep his job but no where near what is expected or needed. I also feel that Wood shares a role in this disappointment. He let the women’s BB program die, the men’s program is no where near where it should be, and the football performance and recruiting are pedestrian at best, all of this with consistently the largest athletic budget in Conference USA. With respect to non/low revenue sports, Wood’s performance has been average. I have been a loyal fan for 40 years and a season ticket holder/ODAF member for much of that time so I feel that I have the background and perspective for my position on this.

We had an opportunity to make a statement.

Last night was very sobering. The whole 2nd half I was thinking to myself "there really isn't anything we can do to beat these guys. We aren't good enough."

We are good enough. We just can’t win the big games for some reason. We have a ton of talent, just need it all to come together.

Yep, if the student outreach hadn't happened, attendance would have likely been under 6k. Section 108 and the donor sections near the court along the sidelines were at least 50% empty. Only full sections were 116 and the4 corner sections.

I believe the winning has more to do with attendance than the names on the front of the jerseys. Even Northeastern was a good draw in attendance when both teams were at the top of the conference

There's certainly no mandatory-attendance requirement for fans, and no one should participate in any voluntary activity that leaves them truly miserable.

But if you didn't enjoy Thursday night's game, notwithstanding the disappointing outcome, then you probably are not a fan of basketball in general. That was a well-played, exciting game. There's much to question regarding why Coach Jones doesn't have our team at a level where we can handle WKU at home, but I don't see how a fan of basketball would not feel like he'd gotten his money's worth on Thursday.

I hope we play as well tonight. If we do, it is very likely that the outcome will be more to your liking.

We need to put a face on the team. Remember that game against Drexel where Baze scored 30+ and we lost because he missed a FT? Not an empty seat in that house. That team was no better than this one and they weren't there to see Drexel. They were there because they wanted to see Baze play. I started going to games to see Alex Loughton play (and it was free with my student ID) and started caring about the program as a whole later. Attendance improved a bit when Trey Freeman was here. We need to pick either Caver or BJ and make him the face of the program and storm the media to get his name out there. Do a feel good story with Bruce Radar about his life or something good and interesting and flood social media with promotion and highlight reels as if he is the best thing to happen for ODU basketball since Odell Hodge. We don't do that at all anymore. Trey only did it because the half court win in the NIT. He made his own legend, but we can help create a new one.

Hoping for a good game tonight. A win would keep us in the hunt for first place... and the auto NIT bid. Time to start another win streak.
